Lack of big play speed is evident

This team looked slow just like they did when Dooley was here. And they got out-muscled in the trenches. This group just doesn’t have the ability to be competitive with good teams. We will be lucky to get to 5-7.

I watched highlights of the Bama/UL game.

Bama’s players looked so much stronger & faster compared to ours.

It’s obvious Pruitt knows he’s going to need elite talent to compete with the big boys.

He’s not used to having to work with lesser talent compared to what he had at Bama.

WV was giving us the short yardage but little additional gains. We took what we could and I'm not that concerned with receiver speed.

Our secondary though...
Nothing is gonna suddenly make freshmen upper classmen or make slow players fast. Gonna have to deal with that all season. 😞

Word on the street says it is difficult to play fast in the first year of a new scheme(s). Lots of 'thinking' going on and not read/react.

Pile on those new schemes with a bunch of freshmen starting for the first time on the big stage and that speed throttles down even more.

UT started against a ranked, seasoned team with a really, really good QB. Our team has much to learn in a short period of time. My expectation is we see continued progress but this is going to be a long year and you should've seen it coming.

Grab a comfortable seat for the ride or just check in occasionally - whatever works for you.

Read your board all week leading up to this game.Frequently a poster would refer to "SEC Speed" and WVU not being able to deal with it game day.SEC Speed is a catch phrase.Until you have it don't use it.Most good teams have speed or they wouldn't be good.Good luck with the rest of your season.

New defensive scheme. Extremely potent offense. Recipe for disaster if you ask me. I’m not going to freak out yet.

SEC speed is very real. People think it's a the little guys but where it kills is when LBs and D-linemen start running guys down. It usually shows up in bowl season when 8 win SEC teams suddenly look fast.

Tennessee desperately needs an influx of speed both on offense and defense. None of Vol WRs could run away from the DBs like WV WR did on their first TD. And the defense looked real slow at times. Only Recruiting can improve that
5 bucks says Peterson will be in our defensive rotation by the end of the year. Pruitt’s D needs athletes.

I've mentioned this a few times since yesterday. No one cares, it seems
Maybe because context?
He clearly said it followed by "doesn't matter how fast you are if you're running the wrong way". Talking about having faster players that weren't mentally good enough to beat out the competition.

Gotta be honest, we all expect VFB to try and cherry pick and change the meaning, its exactly his M.O. but surprises me that you would push this.

First, credit needs to be given to WV's execution. Many times their WRs were running flat out. with our DBs running flat out and in position to make a play. WV's WRs wasted no time or motion. They knew where and when to expect the ball and turned their heads at exactly the last possible moment. If our defenders hesitated for an eyeblink, then time for making a play on the ball was over. Grier was that spot on. My impression was that our defenders were afraid of getting burned, so they got burned. Extreme skill and speed is necessary to defend pass plays executed as well as WV was executing. When our players waited for a WV WR to make a move, he did and the reaction was just too late. I think our guys need to learn to play with a little more speed, decisiveness, and aggression. Again, they seemed to be afraid of committing to the play and getting burned, so they got burned. I think Pruitt will work this problem and tweak our DB's play. There is no total fix for that against a great offense, but there should be some improvement. jmho

He further spoke about pursuit angles and anticipation to get a "jump" [my word not CJP's] on the play. All of which made me think he was working that into our players.

I didn't see any of it yesterday. And now, we get the observations that we're slow. Welp, it shouldn't have mattered by his own words.

You're still missing it. If the faster players take even worse angles, they aren't the better option. That was what he was saying.

But I digress. Checked out your other posts from today and I see the conclusion is already been made. There was enough suckage to complain about, no need to invent imaginary ones.

So the defensive specialist is playing slower players who take better angles? That's our master plan? If those were better angles, I'd hate to see the bad angles.

I'd hate to see them too. Why I'm not complaining about not seeing them. Cause Justin Martin sure was fast.

When CJP said speed is over rated he really meant speed is important but so is technique and intelligence?

Why can't our "straight shooter" just simply say that then?

We don't have play makers on either side of the ball therefore we don't have explosive plays; without them you don't win. The lack of overall team speed has been evident for several years.
