I rarely have an accident in my threads.

Once in my closet, but there was moonshine involved.

Whoever we were holding out for must have said no.

I think this is pretty uneventful, can someone convince me otherwise? Please??

Its true...Question is, will he go to RB's or as our WR coach? From the list of interviews i had thought Joe Whitt would be the hire.
Roper, with is old UT ties and ties to Cut must have been the deciding factor.

He will coach the RB and Taylor will move to WR. That's what I've read anyway.

At least his resume looks good. This is off the Kentucky web site

Coach Bio : Kurt Roper :: Football

Kurt Roper

Position:
Assistant Coach, Quarterbacks

Experience:
1st Year

Kurt Roper, who coached record-setting quarterbacks Eli Manning and Romaro Miller during the last six seasons at Ole Miss, is the new assistant coach for quarterbacks at the Kentucky.

In 2005, Roper will work a set of young quarterbacks as the Wildcats must replace departed starting QB Shane Boyd.

"Kurt has a bright, young offensive mind with the experience of working with quarterbacks who put up great numbers at Ole Miss," Coach Rich Brooks said. "He was part of a very productive offense the past several years. He is a very good fit with our staff. He's a personable coach, familiar with the Southeastern Conference and with some of the areas that we recruit."

In addition to working as the quarterbacks coach for the last six years, Roper was Ole Miss’ passing game coordinator from 2002-04. Under his guidance, Miller and Manning became the most prolific passers in school history.

Roper coached Miller to second-team All-SEC honors in 2000 as Miller broke school career records for passing yards and touchdown passes. Miller has gone on to a professional career with the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League and the Ottawa Renegades and Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

Manning took over from Miller in 2001 and set 47 school records during his three years as a starter. As a senior, Manning won the Maxwell Award as the nation's top collegiate player, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation's top senior quarterback, and was chosen the SEC Offensive Player of the Year by The Associated Press and SEC Coaches. Manning was selected the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers and then was traded to the New York Giants.

Roper joined the Ole Miss staff in time for the Rebels' victory in the 1998 Independence Bowl. The Rebels were bowl-eligible for the next five years and participated in the 1999 Independence Bowl, 2000 Music City Bowl, 2002 Independence Bowl, and the 2004 Cotton Bowl following the '03 season. All totaled, Ole Miss compiled a 44-29 record during his term there.

Roper went to Ole Miss from the University of Tennessee, where he was a graduate assistant from 1996-98. He worked with the Tennessee defense, primarily with the defensive backs, and also helped coach the kicking game. Tennessee played in the Citrus Bowl following the 1996 season and Orange Bowl following the 1997 campaign. The Volunteers were on their way to the 1998 national championship when Roper joined the Ole Miss staff prior to UT's victory in the Fiesta Bowl.

While at Tennessee, Roper helped coach All-SEC defensive backs Terry Fair (1996 and 1997) and Dwayne Goodrich (1998) and two-time All-SEC placekicker Jeff Hall (1996 and 1998).

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to coach with Rich Brooks and the offensive staff at Kentucky," Roper said. "Rarely do you get to work with a man with the knowledge and accomplishments of Coach Brooks. I know a lot about the Lexington area and (wife) Britt and I are looking forward to living there."

Born in Ames, Iowa, Roper played his collegiate football and graduated from Rice University. He was a three-year letterman for the Owls as a quarterback and defensive back. He began his career as a graduate assistant in the video department at Mississippi State in 1995 before going to Tennessee, where he earned his master's degree in sports administration.

Roper is married to the former Britt Albertson. He comes from a football family as his father, Bobby, was a long-time collegiate assistant coach. Bobby Roper began his career as a graduate assistant at Alabama under Paul "Bear" Bryant, then coached at Wichita State, The Citadel, Virginia, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Oregon State, and Texas A&M.

Sounds about right. I hope Foster, Hardesty, Coker can take Troop moving in stride.
All three will be 100% heading into summer/fall practice. I know they will miss the spring but should still be somewhat active in ball handling drills.

I tend to agree but I don't know much about him. Based on what I have read, I don't see any RB or WR recruits getting excited about coming to play for this guy - who used to coach QBs, defense and kickers.

Clearly this is one of Cutcliffe's guys....
So, I guess we just wait and see what he brings to the table.

And what do any of these new hires have regarding Special Teams? Are we going to neglect this?

 Huh? you agree that he's a bad hire, but know nothing about him...talk about jumping to conclusions....

obviously, this is a Cutcliffe guy....just like Matt Luke. One thing i do like though is that their going and getting some folks that can maybe bring a little youthful energy to the mix....until now, it was Taylor, and he was a one man show....now with Luke and Roper, who knows...

I know absolutely nothing about the guy, and have no idea what he brings to the table. But that's why they hired Cut. He's supposed to know.

but granted, it's nothing for anyone to get excited over...and i did hear that KB turned us down....so he was probably 3, 4 or 5 on the list.....

But remember, all great coaches had to start somewhere, and when they did, no one knew anything about them then....remember, Lovie Smith, John Gruden both were on UT's staff at one point in time....now look!? NOt to mention a whole host of asstnts that are now in the NFL....Larry Marmie, Kippy and others.....you just never know....

questionable hire from my point of view. I agree with freak that we probably got turned down by the top 2 or 3 guys that we were after (which is not a good sign). I cannot believe that this guy was their first choice. Maybe people dont want to work for CPF due to his rather conservative approach to offense and game management!!!!!

Bad signs you know you're in trouble:

1)Awful year in recruiting (as it stands now...proceed to trash)
2)All commentary and pre-season talks for upcoming season have us....well - nowhere to be found.
3)Lower profile and experienced coaches coming to UT and others avoiding us

Did you see Pulley play against us? For a freshman I thought he played well... threw into coverage a few times (for picks nonetheless), but I think this guy is probably a pretty good coach.

Roper is an average coach at best.
As for his recruiting Pat Washington and Larry Slade are better recruiters

How many people on here knew who Trooper Taylor was before he was hired? Roper is not the big name we wanted. But we shouldn't judge him before his first game. He will be RB coach. Remember Randy Sanders was RB coach before he was OC. If we have a good year next year then the recruits will start coming back. Be patient Vol faithful.

I agree Swami. I read where Eli swears by him and as someone said he is young but he is a Coach Cut guy so he must have a clue about what he's doing. I like to see us hiring some young guys and getting some energy into the program. Hear's a thought, maybe we should give them a chance instead of assuming the worst. :matrix:
