Kotaku, the Gamer?s Guide

The next Xbox and the next PlayStation won't be released until 2014, if Microsoft and Sony have their way, industry sources tell Kotaku.

Both companies are hoping to wait out the current generation, and extending an already elongated console life-cycle despite clear signs that Nintendo will launch its next machine by the end of 2012.

"Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better," one insider who has worked with the first-party companies like Sony and Microsoft told us.

Other sources with access to first-party companies, speaking to Kotaku anonymously because they aren't authorized to be talking about Microsoft and Sony's plans, said that they too are hearing that 2014 is the target date, though some believe 2013 could happen if either company feels pushed.

The slow recovery of the North American economy will also continue to discourage Microsoft and Sony from releasing new machines. "I don't think either Sony or Microsoft are interested in a new console till they can advance the technology, and they certainly don't want to launch at a $600 price point," analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities told Kotaku. "It may take till 2014 to get 2TB hard drives, uber fast CPUs and state-of-the art graphics and sell at $400."

With that said... they should continue to milk things. I still feel that the current generation is great. I just hope they do not goes more toward wii/kinect/move style games. Personally I want to hold a controller and press buttons. I get my exercise at national fitness center.

Good to hear, the Xbox 360 and PS3 still have potential. That said, the people at Microsoft need to get off their asses and make some exclusives, Gears of War 3 is the only exclusive they have coming out this year. They aren't even winning exclusive content battles anymore.

Looking forward to seeing Nintendo's new console at E3 in a few months.

M$ really doesn't have to make exclusive software, the majority of developers have been, and will continue to make games for xbox and port them to the PS3. That's not a shot at which console is better, that's just the reality.

Is there a reason that became the norm?

what do you expect? The purpose of introducting Kinect and Move was to extend the lives of these consoles another 4-5 years.

It's - whether or not unfortunately - extremely expensive for these companies to produce new systems and oftentimes they see little to no real balancing revenue from the actual system sales (sometimes they lose money....save the Wii this generation, which a $6/system profit....which is apparently alot for these kind of things).

Because of such, the companies are going to extend the lives of their systems as much as they can.

Make a point then.

Forza 3 =/= GT5

I suppose it's a AAA title but it's not going to sell consoles and it doesn't have the name Gran Turismo and all that that carries. Sim racers are also borderline niche titles.

The rest of what you posted were nowhere close to triple-A titles, some weren't even relevant anymore.

Splinter Cell is another exclusive that MS has that appears to have slipped from relevance. PS3 is also getting the Splinter Cell multi-pack shortly, so it's not even full exclusivity.

Bungie doesn't make the Halo games anymore. Reach was the swan song and they chose to move on, because they wanted to make other things

Microsoft handed the Halo franchise over to 343 studios....who, so far, seems to be using the business model of just milking (first thing they're doing is a remake of Halo 1)

Thanks for the info, had no idea that had gone down. Not a Halo player in the slightest so I dont follow it that much.
