He's probably exaggerating, but it's definitely shorter to go 441 from Athens rather than going I85 to I26 to I40. In fact, it's probably shorter from Athens to go back down I-85 to Atlanta and take I-75 to Knoxville.Wow. I live in Spartanburg & it's about 2.5 hrs to Knoxville & about 2.5 hrs to Athens. That should make it about 5 hrs from Athens to Knoxville. If u cut 2 hrs off ur time going 441 then ur only 30 mins behind me. Somehow I don't believe u make it from Athens to Knoxville in 3hrs no matter what route u take.

I wouldn't even route the interstate to Savannah. I'd say let it follow US441 down to Athens and then pick up US78 to Thomson (outside) Augusta and then have it roughly follow US 1 or US 25 and hook up with I-16 somewhere between Swainsboro and Statesboro. There's 2 interstates that go through savannah, I-95 & I-16

441 has improved over the years. Still looking for a decent path from Franklin, NC over though.

I've never made it to Spartanburg in that time. Between speed traps, wrecks, and construction this stretch of 85 has been a nightmare for me. Add to it I'm on the other side of Athens. I can get to Knoxville up 441 in about 3.5 hours. Of course it means getting up early on a Saturday morning to beat the RV's driving through the Smokies but it has been done.
Deal, a former north Georgia congressman, is especially upbeat about portions of the route that would tie Savannah to Augusta.
“With the deepening of the port of Savannah,” he said, “we must improve our infrastructure so we can move goods from ships fast and efficiently to other parts of the state and throughout the Southeast.
“We have the opportunity to bring in significantly more cargo, and we need to be ready so ships don’t go farther up the coast to another state.”….
The state Department of Transportation, which has trouble bankrolling even the top of its wish list, doesn’t consider I-3 a high priority.
But the viability of the project goes beyond money matters, Barnes said.
“Before any construction gets started,” he said, “we need to balance the consequences … on our environment and the quality of life for Georgians near the proposed route.”
Only problem with 16 is all the John Q Law that's sits on the road and has a stick up their arse, especially in Laurens County.

You do not speed through Dublin. That has been the rule as long as I've been alive. Other than that, they don't even need posted speed limits on 16.
