Know the opponent: Georgia Tech updates and articles

I was just going thru the posts and answering as I read them. So I have read them now but posted these before obviously. I always thought when these two teams would meet, it would be later in the year when it would be easy to determine whose season would benefit more. Then they make it a darn kickoff game.

By the way, any insight on best way to do parking with the new stadium?

In not sure about the parking yet because the old stadium is still up. I'll do some reasearch and then open a thread on here in a few days. I'll include parking, times the gate opens etc.

Showoff!

The caveat I would add to this though is that CPJ probably got more out of his roster than the sum of its talent. CBJ won 8 games with an 11 win roster.

This might be true, but there's something to be said about building an 11 win roster.

I'm a huge CPJ fan because he can win 9 or 10 games with a "7 win roster." He is probably a better tactical coach than Saban. But if you dropped him into the job at Alabama, he wouldn't have Saban's successes because CPJ is not the kind of coach that's going to routinely put together an 11 win roster.

He's a very good fit for Tech. But a different coach might be a better fit for other schools, because recruiting is also part of coaching. I have no opinion about y'all's coach, but if he's recruiting well, don't use that as an excuse to fire him.

Watching prior games, and Justin Thomas was a great passer. I always assumed e couldn't throw well.

Tech made a lot of third and longs because of his ability to throw. Tech fans are you worried about replacing that passing production? It seems Jordan is much wake in that area.

Yes.

And Yes.

One of our younger guys is supposedly a very good passer, and Jordan definitely wasn't last year. But then again, his role wasn't to be, because he was a short yardage goal line backup. With practice, who knows?

So who do you think gets the start for Ga Tech? Still Jordan?

Nobody knows.

I've watched this offense a LOT and unfolded a lot of its flaws. On paper it's perfect, because you combine all the frustrations with defending the wishbone "classic Nebraska" style run attack with 4 seams and run-and-shoot passing. If players could do everything in the offense, it would be literally unstoppable. On paper. The biggest problem with it, is it takes a huge amount of practice to get the timing down on the option, AND it takes a huge amount of practice to get the timing down on run-and-shoot passing with option routes baked in. And you simply aren't allowed to practice enough to get good at both. NCAA won't let you.

Mike Leach schools everyone on run-and-shoot because his players practice like crazy. QBs are taking snaps every 15 seconds in practice for long periods, and WRs get really good at knowing where to go. We can't do that, because we have to dedicate well over half our time in practice to getting the option right.

So some years we're good at passing and some years we just flat aren't. 2017 might be an "aren't" year. No way to tell until the first few games are in.

Mark Stoops went ballistic during your bowl game last season when DT Alvonte Bell went down with a knee injury. I assume he was upset with the block.

He got pissed off thinking there was a chop block but there wasn't one. The announcers were laughing at him on the replay.

This trend shows you'll have 2 games lost in 2017 without a fumble -- one of your losses will be to the Vols with a fumble(s), but who will be the 2-loss teams without a fumble?

More like 1 "no fumble" loss per year. My money's on Clemson. :)

I like Johnson. His scheme does allow him to recruit a different kind of athlete on O. You are right in all you said. If he's at a different school then he won't get the elite offensive players they're now getting because they don't want to play in a system that won't get them to the NFL. It has a brilliance all its own... and it will win some games because the scheme is so different.

You put that O together with a D that plays its assignments... and you win some games even without elite talent.

I'm still a Jones skeptic. I like a whole lot of what he's done. He runs a pretty clean program. He's dramatically improved academics. He reps the program well with his personal character. He has recruited well.

He's also had some coaches on staff that he should have left in Cincy. Player development in some respects has been suspect. He can't keep his team healthy (for 3 years, not 1). He doesn't get it done on gameday and often when he has the advantage.

In response, he now has a very good S&C coach. He's replaced almost the whole staff over the last two years. And he seems to be trying to find a balance to keep players healthy yet have them ready to play physical.

I hope he succeeds. UT doesn't need another coaching change. But the standard has to be high for him.

Paul Johnson said Clinton Lynch did not practice again today.

Seems very unlikely we see him play Vs UT.

Sorry, I know it's in this thread somewhere, so forgive me for the question, but: who is Lynch, again? What position does he play? And how much does it hurt not to have him?

Starting A Back, big play threat. Averaged something like 20 yards a play last year.

Hurts a good bit from his big play potential.

We have pretty good depth at A Back though, expect to see more of Nathan Cottrell now. He will be first off the bench if Lynch doesn't play.

So you are missing two starting running backs in a triple threat running attack, plus your running QB has been out all camp with a foot injury, plus your only senior Oline depth... .got it.

but we're missing a MLB that has never played!!!! oh noeeeeeessssss!!!!!!

Thanks, man. Sorry to hear that. Would much prefer for both teams to face off with their very best on the field, would be the best possible game.

Wish the lad a speedy recovery.

Lynch was the guy I was worried about. Searcy and Green are good, but Lynch seemed to have an extra gear.

Benson seems a little small for the B Back to me unless 247 has him listed incorrectly at 180.

Paul Johnson just last week said Benson was actually weighing more than Derick Mills. Benson is 215 right now at 5"9. Also I think green and Searcy might be faster than Lynch, or at least the same speed, but lynch always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Nathan conttrell is probably our fastest Aback.

Don't you guys primarily rotate 3 guys through A Back? So it will likely be Searcy, Green, and Cottrell. Thanks for the info, btw. I knew 180 seemed light.

We can rotate 3 but I think Paul Johnson likes 4. Lynch still might play from what I've heard. If not we might play another guy as the 4th, idk though.
