Know the opponent: Georgia Tech updates and articles

I posted this on another thread here.

We have a 4 way QB battle. Paul Johnson has said this is our deepest position and he's comfortable with any of the four starting. I personally think Matthew Jordan will be the starter. He started @ VT last year and led us to a win.

If he starts expect to see a ton of running up the middle with him. He will run a lot of midline IMO.

Lucas Johnson is the best passer of the group (Rs Fr) and Jay Jones is the most electric (Rs Fr) of the group.

B Back is Derrick Mills. Our star player. He's a hoss. Tough bruising running style. Not a lot of top end speed but he's a bulldozer.

A Back's are JJ Green, Qua Searcy and Clinton Lynch. All three are really good players. Clinton Lynch is our big play threat and is great in passing game. We rotate A Backs in and out every play (they actually being the play call in from the sidelines) our 4th A back position is still up for grabs. I expect it to be Nathan Cottrell a speedy back from Tennessee. We will most likely rotate Green, Lynch and Search with Cottrell playing sparingly.

WR we have Ricky Jeune and Brad Stewart starting. Jeune is a good blocker and has steady hands. Same goes for Stewart. Stewart really gets after it blocking has has great hands. Just doesn't get a ton of separation. The backup spots will be determined in camp. Most likely Jalen Camp will be the 3rd WR.

LT is Jahaziel Lee. Played a bunch as a Freshman last year and played well. He struggled a bit and Spring ball according to Coach Johnson. He's athletic and excells at getting to the second level. Backup will likely be Jake Stickler who hasn't played much.

LG is Parker Braun. Played a ton as a FR last year and started majority of the year. Our best lineman. He's tough and physical. Really good player. Backup position is up for grabs but it will be someone who hasn't played much. Could be a true FR.

C is Kenny Cooper. Another one who played as a true FR last year. He started @ VT last year due to injury and played a lot in the bowl game. He's a good player. Backup spot is wide open. If Cooper were to get hurt we'd likely slide out starting RT (Marshall) back to C as he's played there before.

RG is Will Bryan. Has played a lot and is a proven lineman. Another good player up front for us. Same as LG the backup spot is open for grabs. Shamire Devine is the first lineman off the bench at G right now. He has all the potential in the world but has never kept his weight down. Hes anywhere from 380-400 pounds. Coaches have always wanted him in the 330 range. He's good for a few snaps a game.

RT is Andrew Marshall. Has seen a lot of snaps in his time at Tech. Solid lineman. Backup is up for grabs. Stickler could slide over here if needed.

We have 5 lineman coming in. I expect a couple to make the 2 deep.

Our eligibility is as follows

QB Matthew Jordan - RS JR
A Back Clinton Lynch - RS JR
A Back JJ Green - RS SR
B Back Dedrick Mills - So
WR Ricky Jeune - RS SR
WR Brad Stewart - JR
LT Jahaziel Lee - So
LG Parker Braun - So
C Kenny Cooper - So
RG Will Bryan - RS Jr
RT Andrew Marshall - SR

Hope that helps.

Be glad to answer any questions that I can

Great info :good!:

Tech takes serviceable guys and beats better teams through scheme. Most teams have never played against option football and a week of practice before is no time to learn. Pretty opportunistic. They block exceptionally well and punch above their weight on defense. That being said, we've had all summer to be ready for them. They have virtually no passing game. It was ranked well outside the top 100 div 1 teams. It goes without saying that you have to stack the box, get off the blocks, and shut it down in the backfield. I think we can do it but they are going to put at least 28 on the board. My gut tells me that our passing game is going to surprise everyone. I'm banking on us putting 35+ on the board for the win. If we come out and just try to run over them, we lose bad.

After practice today when asked about the QB situation Paul Johnson said

"I know exactly what I'm going to do, I've known for awhile"

So it appears he has a starter in his mind.

Won't be announced until Labor Day though.

Paul johnson was exspecting the QB spot to be cleared up, he originally said MJ was the guy that others would have to pass, but now it's still an open competition and Paul said things didn't turn out like he thought. Matthew Jordan also got injured Saturday and came back yesterday if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if he will start now. Paul Johnson said things were clearing up at the QB spot on Monday, and Matthew Jordan was injured then. So reading between the lines tell me if things are clearing up and Matthew is injured, then another guy has taken the lead.

What are you exspecting to happen?

Odd question. How is your kicker on KO? We have an All American at kick returner. Will we see touchbacks or chances?

Our kicker last year was AWESOME, hes now on the panthers. This year we are not sure. Looks like a true freshman might start. He has a big leg but not sure if y'all will have a chance to return or not. He kicked a lot out of the end zone in high school from what I understand.

Strength would be OL, skilled positions, and Secondary. Our leading tackler was a safety, and we have the number 1 corner in pass break ups in the acc from last year. We also have a DE who led the acc in QB hurries. Weakness based on last year would be DT and LB. depth at DT and LB is a weakness as well.

Our DT play is questionable at the moment. We have a solid reliable guy in K. Vickers. We have a 5 star JR that could break out after a tough fresh. year and an injury mid year last season. Behind him are a few guys with "potential".

However, you may wear us out in the dive, we do have athletes at end and LB and safety hopefully that can stop the pitch part of the T.O.

We have a solid interior OL though and a tough running back. Hopefully we can take advantage of your interior DL more than you can get into ours lol.

As Techfan1 said that is up in the air.

We will be starting a true FR at K unless the former walk on beats him out.

Our punter will also be a true FR.

I think TM will start, he knows the offense well. And from what I have heard he looked good in the scrimmage Saturday.

Who knows? Just my gut saying Lucas. Paul has been too quiet about him lately. Another thing is when he mentions Lucas he says he needs to work on confidence. That's really the only thing he mentions about him negatively. Just the way I read it.

TaQuon would make more sense logically.

Will probably be Jordan :)

What I find interesting is the defense in these gifs. Every clip shows bad tackling and bad angles when most of these plays could have been stopped for much smaller gains and on the one, a touch down. That one player was running completely untouched into the end zone. No wonder Georgia Tech fans have a love/hate relationship with Ted Roof.

BS. I have serious proof of injury. Let's start with Deangelo Tyson.

There is a difference between a cut block and a chop block. Chop blocks are against the rules. IMO, they should be subject to post-game review and punishment. I think that should include "cut" blocks from behind like the one that first injured Tuttle. Kublanow (sp?) should have been suspended for multiple games for diving at a players lower leg from behind like that.

Cut blocks are not particularly dangerous. UT has had torn biceps and pectoral muscles on a few occasions since the last guy was injured by a cut block. I cannot remember the last guy injured by a legitimate cut block.

This thread would be therapeutic for some of our posters... GT loses one guy on the OL and has somewhat of a crisis. UT loses 1 guy and has 2 or 3 others miss a few practices... out of about 12 guys fighting for PT... and there's a meltdown.

Losing Marshall sucks bad but what scares me most now is if we lose somebody else.

I feel comfortable with Stickler, Lee and Bryan at T...after that I would be concerned.

Marshall loss hurts due to him being backup C as well.

Here is crisis mode for us GT fans.

All ACC stud B back Dedrick Mills has been dismissed from the team.

HUGE loss for us. Our best player by far. He was going to see 20+ carries a game this year.

Tr FR Jerry Howard is fighting for the starting job with So Kirvonte Benson.

Can't overstate how big of a loss this is for us.
