He has consistently put together some of the most impressive college performances I've ever seen. Has anybody ever come out of left field and rushed onto the national stage in the way that he has? Can't think of many. And I can't wait to see him become a true legend in the Tourney. Believe! GBO

Congrats, DK! Well-deserved. He should honestly be NPOY but I understand why he won’t be.

Well, I guess he now officially meets the requirements for getting his jersey retired. I think whether or not that happens will entirely depend on how far this team goes the next few weeks.

He must meet at least 3 of the 5 criteria below and he has two already. It is possible he could get POY from some organization. He may have a career record at UT, but I do not think he does with playing only one year. I guess we just need to win the tournament!
  • SEC Player of the Year ✅
  • National Award (Player of the Year, Sullivan, or similar honor)
  • First-Team All-American ✅
  • Career record holder in a significant category (as determined by the committee) at the UT, SEC, or national level upon completion of career
  • National championship during tenure
I think the selection committee has some flexibility in the criteria as well.

First player to lead a Vols team to the Final Four probably would do it.

That's his best shot at meeting the criteria. If he has a great tournament and we make a deep run and someone knocks off Purdue, it's possible. Do they wait until the tournament is over before voting on NPOY?

DK is likely to win the award for best Small Forward. So that national award will probably end up giving him the 3 boxes he needs to check. But, since he will be playing only one year, I'm sure there will be some resistance to having his jersey retired. That's why I think the only way it happens is if he leads us to something historic like that first Final Four.

It’s going to be an exciting tournament, especially when Knecht leads out Vols to the final four and the chip over UCONN.

Yes, I believe.

Hypothetical - if he hadn’t rolled his ankle against NC, would he now be the front runner for National POY over Eady? His per game scoring average would be increased 3-4 points and he would hold the all time scoring record for a visiting player at NC.

If he leads UT’s first ever FF, even if we don’t cut down the nets in Phoenix, I can’t imagine he wouldn’t get backing for retirement

Knecht was must see TV virtually from the jump for the entire season, except for those series of games when he was nursing an injury in December. Elite offensive skills with elite mental toughness and has been a pleasure to watch. DK gave us moments that we won't ever forget with scoring explosions that don't come around very often. I hope he gives us a Glen Rice-type NCAA tournament run. While UT has had some great scorers, I don't think we have seen anyone as versatile as Knecht at all 3 levels offensively, which in my opinion puts him in the Top 5 from the players I've seen over the years.
