It really is not that baffling. Fulmer got lazy, and felt like he was entitled to be lazy, while the rest of the SEC was amping up in every category. Nobody can rest on their laurels.

See ... I don't think Fulmer got lazy.

I think Fulmer was never a good coach to begin with. He was a great recruiter, who was surrounded by talented personnel when he took over. But most of those guys were Johnny Majors' guys. Combining Fulmer's talented players with Johnny Majors' coaching staff resulted in an excellent decade for Tennessee.

Once Majors' personnel slowly started to go off to other places (particularly Cutcliffe), Fulmer showed little competence in being able to replace them. He was a terrible talent assessor.

If anything, Dooley is more like Johnny Majors on this. Dooley's weakness is X's and O's.

His comments to me were on the spot. He said no reason Tennessee should be irrelevant for the past decade. He said UT is one of the most baffling stories of past 10 years. Going from dominance to mediocre in this time frame. He said what any realistic fan would say, we need to build depth and elite players at key positions and defense to compete. And no reason the Tennessee brand can't recruit nationally because of it's history and tradition. He also said Dooley deserves a chance but better fix it soon. No time to waste.

sounds about right
