Kirk Herbstreit: 'I Was an Idiot' - Sports Blog - The FanHouse

Last season, Saurian Sagacity pointed out that Herbstreit was in next to last place among picking college football winners heads up. The only pundit Herbstreit beat out for better predictions? Collegefootballnews.com's Clucko the Chicken, who makes picks based on selecting between two feed bowls that represent the two teams playing in a given game. (Seriously!)

I've always wondered why so many on this site hold Herbstreit's opinion in such high regard, but think Lee Corso is an idiot. One instance I recall was the OU-USC game in 2004. Corso was the only ESPN guy to pick the Trojans. Boy, everyone else looked pretty stupid.

Corso also managed to predict the national championship participants and winner at the beginning of the season back in 1999 (FSU over VT).

We can't help it, Corso acts like such a geek. Not so fast my friend!!!

A) The typo in the title of this thread makes me happy.

B) Herbstreit's popularity is probably because of his demeanor -- he comes across as a reasonable, objective guy; at times he seems to bend over backwards not to appear to be an OSU homer. Corso comes across as a blustery blowhard a lot of times. (e.g., "You're gonna take an alligator over a bulldog? He can eat the bulldog in one chomp! Chomp chomp chomp!") Plus it seems like Herbstreit picks UT a lot more often than Corso, which certainly doesn't hurt his popularity here.

None of that has anything to do with the actual validity of their predictions, which most fans don't much remember from week to week. Interesting question to Google: these guys have been on the air together forever, picking the same games. Isn't there any site which has their all-time head-to-head record?

I'd be shocked if Corso wasn't the leader. He may act goofy, but he knows his football at least as well as Kirk. Even if I don't agree with Lee's picks, I find him hilarious. I'll be sad when he leaves the show. I know that can't be too far off, because he's about 120 years old.

I like Corso too. But I can definitely see how it's almost good-cop-bad-cop, and the Corso persona is the one that people are supposed to hate, while Herbstreit is the golden boy. But they both know their stuff. And picking college football games in front of the whole country is an unpredictable enough business that sooner or later, you're going to say something that later turns out to be ridiculous.

And no, I don't like that Corso usually picks against us. But hey, in the big games that Gameday usually comes to, in recent years he's usually been right to do so.

It's hard for me to hate Corso too much when Chris Fowler is right there.

And by the way, if anyone's breaking in a new girlfriend: do what I did, and for the first three or four years, refer to him about half the time as "Kirk Herbstreit" and the other half as "Herb Kirkstreet." Many, many years from now, you'll be cackling at your wife because she STILL can't keep his name straight. Every time she calls him "Herb" is comedy gold, I promise you.

Fowler's a tool. And whatever his whole trailer-park UT thing supposedly was (and I didn't hear any of it), it doesn't even matter. Fowler is obviously superfluous. He fills the Musberger Emeritus Vacuous Announcer chair, so he doesn't have to know anything. Corso v. Herbstreit is the whole show.

eh, i think Kirk went a little over the edge by really commenting on the potential OSU/Mich rematch vs the OSU/FL game, and it only made it worse that he is in fact a big 10 guy.

but at the end of the day, i don't really have any issues with KH. he's usually pretty even handed, and just calls it like he see's it.

though last year was the first time that i can really recall that he was wrong, a lot.

gators need to get the chip off their shoulder.

agreed...although I do think Fowler is a snob. I enjoy Corso, he's hilarious in some of his picks, and wrong probably 60% of the time which was probably better than his record coaching. He makes the show IMO.

You're right about that but for the life of me I don't understand where he gets the idea that everybody thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. He's just a big windbag with no substance to me...

They should replace Fowler with Clucko. Seems like a pretty solid move to me! :)

His personality is so flamboyant it's a contrast to Herbstriet, that I think is good chemistry. The little detail of him puttin on his picks mascot headwear for example, it's like he's one of your buddies in your den picking against you. I think he appeals to many college football fans even if it's a laughable/dislike kinda thing, you just gotta tune in and see what he's gonna say.

Did anyone mention that the title of this thread rocks?! :)
(rhetorical question)
