Apparently he fell at the Sugar Bowl and broke his hip then there were complications during the surgery

First I have heard that there was an issue at the game.

RIP

Wow, that’s awful. It would have been sad if he had passed from an existing condition or some such, but this is just a gut punch. I understand that accidents will happen, but this should prompt some kind of review on accessibility standards for the superdome and other stadiums across the country.

Hip fractures in elderly adults is often a death sentence.

He was apparently in his mid 70s and seemed to be pretty active. Traditional high school football coach kind of guy.

I wonder when he fell? Before the game, during, etc? Can you imagine having to coach your biggest game of the year after finding out about that?

Edit-linky with more info. Looks like he fell on NYE and not at the game. So basically Kirby had to coach with that on his mind

It happened 2 days before the game.

Ah, I took “at the Sugar Bowl” to mean, well, “at the Sugar Bowl” as opposed to “while in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.

Yeah, my bad on that one bro.

The first blurb I saw said at the Sugar Bowl so that is what I assumed also and thus the way I worded it that way

Updated stories indicated be fell on NYE night

My apologies for being unintentionally misleading.

Usually a result of poor diet as they age. People think the eldest need crap like boost abb no d ensure. When in truth they need much more bacon, eggs and Chuck roast. Hate that for Kirby. Losing a parent is never easy.

I feel the same way, but one is sports while the other is life. Condolences to Kirby and family.

Well said...I can't begin to comprehend what they are feeling right now, but I can imagine it. I truly hope that they find peace in shared memories and the legacy Mr. Smart left behind.

In elderly people, you wonder if they "fell and broke their hip," or they "broke their hip THEN fell." Osteoporosis.

Anyway, condolences to Kirby and his family.

Many times it is the hip breaking first, then falling. You are correct.
