Kirby takes shot at Vols opening game?

Let's review UGA's OOC opening games the last ten years (Bold = Big Games):

2006: Western Kentucky (5-6) C-USA Win
2007: Unranked Oklahoma State (7-6) Big 12 Win
2008: Georgia State (6-5) Sun Belt Win
2009: #9 Oklahoma State (9-4) Big 12 LOST
2010: UL-Lafayette (3-9) Sun Belt Win
2011: #5 Boise State (12-1) Mountain West LOST
2012: Buffalo (4-8) MAC Win
2013: #8 Clemson (11-2) ACC LOST
2014: #16 Clemson (10-3) ACC WIN
2015: UL-Monroe (2-11) Sun Belt Win

Looks like your team schedules a bunch of cupcakes (6/10 games), then when you schedule quality opponents you choke (1-3). Shut up, Kirby.

Except he had nothing to with the scheduling the last 10 years. Or even the next few really.

I bet Northwestern's message board is going crazy over him mentioning their scheduling of Western Michigan. Not a smart move to take a shot at a program like that.

Probably still complaining we ran the score up by returning an INT 100 yards.

Prolly could have left out the comparisons and stuck with UNC is great and been fine.

Much ado about nothing tho really.

Seemed appropriate, in that the orange masses already have shifted most of their attention to the second week at Bristol.

Kind of reminds me of the another guy who played for Georgia and became a defensive coordinator at Texas and then got a major head coaching job at Florida. I think he's at South Carolina now. Hopefully Kirby has similar success.

Not really a shot...or is it?

From ESPN

By the end of summer workouts, when the team is lifting the most, the players are watching clips of their first opponent. "It's a hell of a lot better when that first game is Clemson, North Carolina or Wisconsin than it is when it's App State or Western Michigan or somebody," Smart said.

Apparently Kirby hadn't noticed that App State won 11 games last year and is his opener next year.

Makes him look like a meathead.

I dont know why coaches do this, he has cupcakes too. They are more than likely going to open with a cupcake next year or the year after, so whats he going to say then?
I hate his haircut too, he looks like an idiot

Ray Goff was also an oustanding player for UGA and an even better coach. UGA fans conveniently leave off his name when invoking the ex-coordinator mantra as well as ex- player.

Kirby is not very Smart! Sorry but I just had to go there. I see Kirby fired at UGA in 4 seasons. he is a defensive minded coach and it is very, very seldom that defensive minded head coaches are very successful. Also, he isn't the smartest cookie in the cookie jar. In addition to that, I suspect that Saban did most of the play calling at Bama and that Kirby took the credit. Just because he eats lunch with Saban doesn't mean he will be successful.

UGA is one program that doesn't need to be dissing anyone about a sissy schedule! They have pattened soft scheduling!

Eh. You can do that without running down Appy St. Or any other lower level school thats an opener.

I dont see it as that big a deal really. Just silly to word it that way.

Boy would I love to see UNC come out swinging and give UGA a loss to start off the season.

I agree. These yahoos here though swear Kirby has the sec in the bag this year already, or he wouldn't have left bama. They're going to the playoffs, no doubt about it.

GA fans have to love this / their new HC hasn't even looked at his Year 2 schedule ---

Yeah except none of that matters because Kirby never coached Uga for any of those games. You would have to look at Bamas games.

Georgia is his team. He has to be able to back up what he says. He's citing playing Clemson, and Georgia is the team that has played them in the opener in the last few years, not Bama (though Bama opened against them in '08).

Really no matter how much one tries to spin it, his comment doesn't make sense. 1) UGA played Clemson last year 2) UNC is not remotely like Clemson 3) UGA opens with App State next year 4) He knows we recruit well and is taking a desperate sounding shot at UT

This is so true. Forget everything I said already, this is all that matters. Here's a link with an explanation of how even though the dates are not set in stone, two of their other OOC games are already set for Sept 9 and 16 so in all likelihood, the very loud-mouthed coach who spoke the words will be opening against the same team next year.
