Seems strange to me that of all the former Saban assistants who have landed HC gigs, he has not been one of them.

I always thought he may be a good fit at Georgia if that job ever opened up, which it may soon.

Am I the only one who thinks that a big program like USC, VT, USCjr, etc. hiring someone with no head coaching experience would be a huge mistake?

You're probably better off going with someone like Fuente or Herman. Sure, Smart has been a part of championship teams, but Saban is a defensive coach and is basically the dictator of that team and program. We don't know how much of an impact Smart really has on them.

Would fit the build for Va Tech. Keeps the defensive style alive at Va Tech and gets him away from Bama.

Kiffin will end up HC somewhere in 2016.

He go to VT, his first lose would be to TN. Sounds like a great hire to me. :)

Not sure I buy this..why would he want to take the VT job if it is very likely that the UGA job, a place where he played and coached, will be open at the end of the year?

If I were a coach looking for a HC gig I would take UGA first if open just from the tradition, competition and recruiting perspective. Honestly, Va Tech would be my second choice based on what's open right now. It is a great school with a decent foundation and a reasonable path to the Playoffs each year. After that if you look at the quality of life factors, I would put Va Tech at the top of that list. Blacksburg is beautiful and Virginia is a great place to raise a family. Athens and Columbia are... well... not so nice. Just my $.02.

I don't see UGA firing Richt this season. The guy has spent the last 15 years making Georgia a solid program. Sure fans are getting tired of the 8,9,10 win seasons and they haven't competed for the SEC in a couple years but are you really thinking that Kirby Smart is the answer? A guy with no HC experience gets one of the top 10 jobs in College Football?? Sure he has been a big reason that Alabama has been so dominate over the past 8 years but theres a huge difference in being a DC vs a HC(ask muschamp, kiffin, Chizik, Mason). I think Bobo will have an offer to be the head coach at UGA before Smart only because Bobo has that experience now. McElwain was a Co went to Co State and then got his opportunity at Flordia, Tom Herman was a Co at Ohio State and now the coach at Houston and he will probably get a big time job soon, Justin Fuente was a Co went to Memphis and is about to land a big time job. The pressure that would be on the HC at a place like UGA would not be ideal for your first HC position. You learn what it takes at a small school and then your ready for your big time conferences.

Smart to VT would be a great spot for him to learn and not have crazy pressure put on him. He coaches them up for a couple years and has a solid Defense that VT expects and then Saban retires and he goes for that.

They should throw the check book at Fuente. They could get him there for the right money. It's probably the best job available other than USCw unless UGA comes open. No way I would want to take USCe. Who wants to follow Spurrier?

Huge hire for VA Tech. They would go ahead and change the name of the stadium to Lane Stadi...wait...

I think the Fuente to another school can stop for the moment. Memphis is making a big push for the Big 12 and he is familiar with it. From what I understand he thinks he can build something like Patterson did. He is a low key guy. But this is all just hearsay, but expect the AD give him a major raise and contract extension.

If Fuente's sticking around with the belief that a Big XII invite is imminent, then he's an idiot.

Do you seriously think that Memphis is getting an invite to a major conference any time within the next 20 years?

If so, I've got some ocean front property in Nebraska that I'd love to have you take a look at.

Don't know don't care. Kinda like your posts. USC program>bama program.

Totally disagree. Conference expansion is all about media and markets. Memphis being in a tri-state area and in the heart of the SEC would be a boom for the Big-12. It would also expose the mid-south to recruiting for those schools.

Memphis is only the 48th ranked media market in the country. The Big XII could go get UAB and get the 40th, but they aren't going to do that either.

It's not simply about saying "we aren't there, so let's go there". It's about getting a team that will actually win you a sizable share of a decent market. A&M might have been the second most valuable team in Texas, but the second most valuable team in Texas is still an awesome grab, particularly if you aren't in Texas yet. But picking up what is maybe the 5th most popular team in the 48th ranked media market just doesn't move the needle. Especially when they play in an aging dump off-campus, and only average keeping it half-full.
