Kiffin's play calling...

...I hope he learned from last week. This isn't meant to be a bash Kiffin's play calling thread, but there are certain routes that I really hope we don't call. For example, the deep out... very bad route for a QB who stares down receivers. If we're gonna go deep, I hope we go fade, much less likely to be picked, especially in single coverage.

Its going to be imperative for us to get Crompton rolling with some easy completions, screens, etc. If the gators are stacking the box there will be opportunities. I'm hoping we can quickly move to some quick slants (that aren't batted down at the LOS, lol) and then play action, should really help with keeping the run blitzes at bay.

Bottom line, Kiffin has to be smart in the play calling, got to protect Crompton's psyche. We absolutely can not throw a pick early in this game, especially on our side of the field. Got to call this one well to have a chance.

Also, if the ball is on the left or right hash mark, I really hope he doesn't call curls for the outside receiver on the opposite hash mark. Several times, Crompton made a cross-field 30 yard throw that was much more horizontal than vertical. This defense will eat that alive.

yea i think he will too. but you can't blam him for last week. you've got a 5th year quarterback that can't tell waht color jersey he's supposed to throw to. i can understand that he probably thought surely this kid is not that bad. no he's just color blind.

Good post, totally agree. No deep outs, Crompton just can't make it work consistently. I would like to see a lot of running mixed in with deep skinny posts, fades, and fly routes. Go for broke a few times and get the Gators out of the box.

His playcalling for the first half of the UCLA game was pretty good in my opinion, he just doesn't have the athletes for everything yet. Obviously all bets were off in the second half and he didn't want to do anything buy run off tackle. But yes, it will be interesting to see how he uses Crompton today knowing what he knows now.

I think he will do some things different. I could see more passes out in the flat to the RBs. If we get within range, I could see him takin more shots deep. Gonna be hard to move it 10 yrds at a time.

Such a shame he has to call plays to keep Crompton less dangerous. But it is what it is.

CLK seems to be pretty stubborn. He may turn him lose. We will see how much confindence he has in him.

Had too much, too long last week.

IMO he went into the UCLA game planning on holding back some anyway, and then after the unfortunate Crompton events he was forced to limit the playbook even more than he had hoped. He would have opened it up more if we faced a bigger deficit. He thought we could win just running it down their throat, and he was within 1 yard of being right. New week, new opponent. I expect him to open it up and let it all hang out today.

Screens, screens, and more screens is how we should start with the passing game. RB screens and WR screens, just so JC can get some kind of confidence going. Hopefully we have a great running game early is all i can say.

The only problem with so many screens is that if JC does decide to throw a pick on a screen pass, 99% of the time those go back for 6. I like the deep routes with the dump passes to RB's in the flats. We have the horses at RB to take some of those for long gains, thats also how Reggie Bush accumulated so many yards in the receiving game and I believe it could work for us too...

If Florida forces the Vols to pass by taking away the run the Vols get beat really bad....You just can't trust Crompton throwing too many passes....Down the field or not...

I'd like to see a look in slant vs an all out blitz very early. That will let me know that Kiffin and Crompton can manage the game. They know 8 will be in the box and they know UF will blitz hard and early.

I think the deep balls are a MUST for this game. If we need to run the ball, UF needs to know that we'll go deep if we have to. Besides, Cromptons best passes are the deep ones. If the get intercepted, well, it will be like a punt without having to worry about James returning it for TD. Win win win situation if you ask me.

Good post. I think we have to show Florida that we're gonna be unpredictable to try and gain any kind of advantage possible. (By unpredictable, I don't mean Crompton taking turns throwing to our WRs, their DBs, and the ground. :))

I agree - I wouldn't be surprised if Kiffin decided to air it out early and often.

We tried this against UCLA. It didn't work.
