As I keep reading the somber declaration many have made that, "VA Tech is simply a better team than us," I can't help revisiting the games the Vols and Hokies played against the team who may be the next national champion in a few days. Did we not play Bama to the very wire and put up at least as impressive a performance, if not more so, against them than did VA Tech? I concur with the wisdom in the "on any given day" school of thought, and maybe we were just more motivated against the Tide, but I am surprised we would have had a problem getting up for that game yesterday.
I guess my point is that it seems we showed at least more preparedness against Bama than we did yesterday, if not more capability and potential. So what is the difference in that game and the bowl game yesterday? In light of this, it's difficult for me to say that we simply weren't good enough to go toe-to-toe with Tech. It is most likely, I think, a matter of preparation, which includes motivating a team to play their best ball against each and every opponent. So I think the bulk of the blame is on the coaching staff, on whose shoulders the motivation of a team falls.
