Hypothetical alternative if the Doe play is caled a touchback:
MSU gets the ball on their 20. First play they throw a pick and Florida gets the TD that way.
Then, when Florida kicks, because of the extra dew that formed in the intervening 2 minutes, the MSU player fumbles the kick, Florida picks it up and scores again.
Now, down 17 (instead of 10), MSU tries to throw and goes three and out. Punt is shanked. Florida eats up the clocl with another TD drive.
So, had that Doe play been called a touchback, Florida wins 43-19.

Doesn't it feel good to be a rivalry again. You guys get Kiffen (and his mouth) and we lose TT this year. That first SEC game for us each year means somehting again now... And yes I will keep making my comments. I would expect nothing less from you and yours as well...
You really think it was appropriate? The first time Kiffin says something against the beloved Urban Meyer he gets a slap on the wrist (in front of the NATION). When Meyer questions Kiffin's coaching strategy as just "Trying to play to make it close".... That's a low blow. That's like saying Kiffin was quitting at the beginning and never wanted to win. If you've played sports before and are a competitive person then you would probably put that in the same lines as calling someone a "cheater", like Kiffin did.
It wasn't even behind closed doors. It was intentional. Meyer said the things he said INTENTIONALLY to "make a point". Did Slive make a point in his actions? I don't think so.
I agree that Kiffin should be reprimanded for what he said about the officiating, but it is true. Somebody needs to step up to the "big bad boys" in the SEC. This isn't about recruiting. This isn't about getting Tennessee's name out there. This is about integrity, and somebody needs to show it around the SEC and say when they are wrong, instead of putting blame on the coaches when they speak up.
One final thing that I cannot stand is that Kiffin has been nothing but complementary towards both Florida's and Alabama's programs. You do not need quotes because I know you've read the praise Kiffin has given both teams.
Where is the sportsmanship back? I always see other HIGH PROFILE teams say "well, (insert team) is a great team but we came out with the victory". On Saturday, the first words out of Nick Saban's mouth were "we were really tired". GIVE ME A BREAK.
People can talk all they want about Kiffin being "immature" and a "clown" but he tells it like it is. He doesn't hide behind excuses (Florida---the flu, and Alabama---being "tired"). Give credit where credit is due. I'm not saying I want Saban or Meyer to say UT is a "top program on the rise", but give them credit for fighting their asses off and giving them a game. That's all I want to hear.
I don't want to hear excuses.
You make some valid points. Kiffen has said some things very positive about Bama and even about UF at times. Saban also had a lot of praise for Kiffen, his staff and the UT players/team, leading up to the game and I expect that there will be a few more statements in that regard from Saban this week. He nor I have hesitated to give props to the Vols players and coaches and Kiffin when due.
I find it amusing that you don't think it's OK for Saban to talk about players being tired after eight straight games / five straight SEC games. There were countless posts by Vols fans on VN before the game about how it would be in UT's favor to be rested and extra prepared with a bye week while Bama would be facing it's 8th straight week of play. But if Saban mentions it that's an excuse? Oh that's rich.
Kiffin's ranting about the officials and even stating the officiating is the reason he didn't run another play to get closer for the FG is not making excuses? You lost almost all credibility with that.
the majority of penalties against tennessee were offsides and delay of game penalties.. then one was roughing the kicker which was very obvious.. the other was whne a vol dove at the feet of bama blockers on a punt return.. that leaves 2 calls in question..
Maybe you're referring to some of Sabans remarks after the Utah game last season. I tend to agree that he should have made it very clear that he accepted all blame for the way Bama laid an egg in that game. Altholugh he did take the blame for the most part, he also made too many remarks about the team and the fans not respecting Utah and taking them seriously as an opponent. I don't think he was trying to do that as an excuse as much as he was trying to point out a problem that he needed to do a better job of solving. However, I do think a lot of what he said about that stuff was misinterpreted and misconstrued by anti-Sabanists. But to a great extent that's his own fault. He'd have been better off not to mention it and just lay all of the blame on himself.Bama fans slamming ANY opposing coach for post games remarks, is rich. IMO. Given Saban's track record.
I didn't demean Kiffin at any time for using the officials as an excuse until my most recent post. My posts were about what I thought were the differences in Kiffin's behavior versus Petrino's and Mullin's that I thought were probably the reasons Slive reprimanded Kiffin more sternly and threatened him with suspension.

If you don't want to hear excuses then you're in a rather precarious position as a Vol fan, because history shows that excuses and the blame game are Lane Kiffin's MO -- not only at the Oakland Raiders, but ever since his arrival at UT. If you don't see that now you will eventually.
I can see some value in that sentiment. But what Slive has to try to guard against is the image of the SEC getting tarnished more than is necessary by airing dirty laundry (differences, issues, concerns, etc.) out in the open. With the current SEC officiating debacles, Slive should lets some of this slide tho.

That's head coaching 101 as taught by the old school greats like Dodd, Neyland, Broyles, Bryant et al. If something good happens the players and coaching staff get the credit. If something bad happens the head coach takes the blame.
I didn't demean Kiffin at any time for using the officials as an excuse until my most recent post. I only did it then to try to make the poster realize that he was looking at things a bit too much through orange glasses. My original posts that initiated all of that crap back and forth were about what I thought were the differences in Kiffin's behavior versus Petrino's and Mullin's that I thought were probably the reasons Slive reprimanded Kiffin more sternly and threatened him with suspension. I think I made some valid points in that regard, but I've yet to see anyone Vols fans admit that they see those differences. It appears that was a waste of my time.

Maybe repetition will help. KIFFIN KIFFIN KIFFIN KIFFIN KIFFIN KIFFIN.
Sorry about that. I know dang well it's Kiffin. I rarely make that typo.
Okay, with that out of the way...
Where has Saban said anything good about Tennessee besides the usual, "we'll have to look for Eric Berry---he's a great player, and their defense is great" ?????
He had quite a bit of praise. I posted it on VN last week. Too bad you missed it.
I'm glad you find it amusing that I pointed out Saban whining about his team being "tired". Did he say that once during the week leading up to the game? I'd love to see it.
He made those remarks to the reporter on the field immediately following the game in the context of praising the players for doing there best to work through that. I really don't think he was trying to make an excuse. He didn't need to. I'll admit that it's probably better left unsaid because haters will jump at the chance twist such remarks into him making excuses. The fact of the matter is that he has said since the game that he and the staff did not do as good of a job as they should have in offensive game planning and play calling. Again not intended as an excuse, but to point out things that need to be worked on to get better. He made some remarks last week to the effect that the players were pretty weary and he was proud of them for digging deep and working hard at practice.
I have an example for you. Georgia Tech played THREE GAMES in a span of 12 days. Their third game, they played Miami on national television (a night game) and got destroyed. Miami had TEN DAYS of rest before that game. Do you think that was fair? People knew that Tech was "tired"....but Paul Johnson didn't say a word. His words were, "we got our asses kicked". (Sorry for language)
See, not every team makes excuses like Saban (or even Meyer) have. I know the ACC is such a "weak" conference, but Paul Johnson tells it like it is. If his team outplays the other team, then he will flat out say it. If he gets out coached and his team doesn't show up, then he will say it. He won't blame it on being tired.
I agree that HCs should always shoulder all of the blame and refrain from remarks that sound like excuses. HCs should also always give all of the credit to the players and coaching staff. See my other post in that regard.
Would you say because Alabama was "tired" that their QB made poor decisions? McElroy was a nonentity in that game. Not a national title quarterback.
I wish Tennessee played "tired" every week, because Alabama played a near PERFECT game (in the eyes of the referees)... No holdings, no offsides penalties...nothing. Flawless game.
This is what Kiffin said:
He also said he decided to let the clock run down instead of trying to run another play before the kick because he was concerned about the officiating.
"You run another play and you throw an interception or they throw another flag on us -- I wasn't going to let the refs lose the game for us there and some magical flag appear," Kiffin said.
How is that making excuses? Please show me. He simply was telling the reporter his mindset and his strategy for the game. He did not want to lose the game on an interception (highly likely from Crompton) or even a holding penalty (a high possibility as well---or even a "chop block"). There were no timeouts left for the Vols and they wanted to play for that field goal. Again, he's telling it like it is. He's not saying "they lost the game for us".
Again, I'd love to see Kiffin's excuses and his "blame game". He stuck by an absolutely MISERABLE quarterback for five weeks until things "clicked". He protected his quarterback. He stood by his team. I see a man of character and somebody who is willing to work hard and fight for what he believes in... Not somebody who makes excuses if his team does not perform.
Now, if you want....I can show you examples of Kiffin not being happy with his team's performance and specifically calling each problem out.. And no, his team was not "tired" or "sick" in those situations. They just did not play up to a championship caliber.
When you put your finger at somebody you have three pointing back at yourself.
The rest of your post is not even worthy of a response.
I was thinking more along the lines of ,
Saban calls loss to UL Monroe, "A Catastrophic event"
And then actually referenced 9/11 and Pearl Harbor in his remarks on the loss.
I did not have a problem with what he said after the Utah loss, if that was the way he felt.
I can see some value in that sentiment. But what Slive has to try to guard against is the image of the SEC getting tarnished more than is necessary by airing dirty laundry (differences, issues, concerns, etc.) out in the open.
Yes the officiating needs to be improved. He is clearly aware of that or he would not have suspended those refs the way he did. He had to make it clear that the officials better get their act together.
I think Slive feels it will make matters worse to have the coaches all going through tape and whining to the media about calls and no calls they differ with after every tight game. I tend to agree with Slive on that.
Besides, the SEC has a code of ethics that says let's all channel our complaints, concerns, differences etc. internally to the SEC office and deal with them discretely and try to solve them together for the good of the conference and the game. The SEC schools worked together to develop that code of ethics and it's up to them to live up to it. It's Slive's job to enforce that.
I agree. Those remarks were very poor judgement on his part. He never should have gone there at all.
