Slive reprimands Kiffin, but should've suspended him

Lane Kiffin should stick to talking to his players.
(Mark Almond / The Birmingham News)

Lane Kiffin, in his first year in the SEC, got his second reprimand from the conference office today. The Tennessee head coach was scolded by commissioner Mike Slive for his public comments since Tennessee's 12-10 loss to Alabama.

That's a violation of the SEC Code of Ethics.

Slive also put Kiffin on notice. One more violation of league rules, and Kiffin could be suspended for a game.

The Tennessee coach got off easy. Slive should've sat him down for this week's game against South Carolina.

Why? Read on.

After the Alabama game, Kiffin questioned the disparity in penalties. Tennessee, the least-penalized team in the SEC heading into the game, was flagged eight times for 68 yards.

Alabama was penalized once for 10 yards.

``I'm very shocked at the penalties,'' Kiffin said Saturday.

Sunday, he went even further. He questioned why Alabama wasn't penalized on the final play, when Terrence Cody ripped off his helmet in celebration after blocking UT's try at a game-winning field goal.

That wasn't the real problem. This next troublesome crack was:

``I'm sure we'll get one of those letters that mean nothing, that Bobby (Petrino) got last week,'' Kiffin said, ``but Florida and Alabama live on.''

Petrino was reprimanded by the SEC office for criticizing the officials after Florida's narrow win over his Arkansas team. But Petrino didn't call out Slive and the league like Kiffin did.

Kiffin's last comment alone, feeding the fan conspiracy theory that the conference is trying to help Florida and Alabama get to the SEC Championship Game undefeated, should've gotten him suspended immediately.

It's one thing to say the refs blew it, as has happened too often this season in SEC games.

It's far more dangerous to suggest, without real evidence, that they blew it on purpose.

I'll have a lot more to say on this subject in Tuesday's column.

Summary - Jones should have been flagged for offense pass interference.

Try this Pic 1 jones trying to stop does have arm extended but rogan has his arms under jones, flag either way. If you keep looking through those orange glasses it does look that way look at the 3rd or fourth pictures and who has a hand full of jersey so julio can't jump up??

Finally ESPN has added a headline about Mullen and yet: 1) it is below the one about Tennessee (usually newer articles are above older ones) and 2) the wording is different- Kiffin was REPRIMANDED while Mullen gets a WARNING

Out of 5 that count only one may be on jones! Get real and thanks for the pictures it shows the real truth! Pass interference Tennessee!

Mr. Slive,

As a life long fan of the SEC I would just like to voice my disapproval of the officiating this season. In watching SEC football the last three weekends and following up on the games with ESPN, it seems to have become something of a national joke on how bad our officiating has become. To me, it doesn't matter who benefits from the calls and who doesn't, it matters that the officiating crew is calling the games correctly, when a crew does it's job correctly, no one even notices them.. What has happened over the last few weeks, is the integrity of the game with the SEC is being called into question.

I understand that you needed to reprimand Coach Petrino, Kiffin, and Mullen for breaking the rules, that is understandable. However, what I don't understand is that you specifically harassed Kiffin in the public announcement by attaching the word "suspension" to your reprimand, that could have happened behind closed doors. Also, I don't understand why you haven't publicly come out and made a statement that you intend to ensure that the SEC has the top officiating in the country, anything less will feed the conspiracy fires.

Regards,

Reading anyone in Alabama commenting on SEC code of ethics is laughable.

That's like reading a book by the Menendez brothers on how to treat your parents with respect.

My email to Mr. Slive

Mr. Slive,

As a long-time SEC Football fan I am very concerned with the poor officiating for this year. As many fans of the SEC have seen in the past few weeks there have been many too many bad calls made in prime-time games.

One example that you may not be aware of is an official "pointing out the ball" when it was still live to Alabama football players after they had blocked Tennessee's last kick. The Alabama players were directed to the ball by the official and subsequently jumped on the ball, ending the game. This is completely unacceptable. Officials should never aid a football player on the field of play. I hope you watch the film and address this concern.

Suspending one of the crews was a good start but more action needs to be done. I understand that you would prefer to do all disciplinary actions behind the scenes to protect the integrity of the referees. But what about the integrity of the SEC? ESPN and other major sports news networks and websites have had multiple news stories about how poor the officiating in the SEC has been this year.

I understand you must reprimand coaches because rules must be implemented. However, if the officiating was up to the standard that the SEC has prided itself on then the comments about the referees would be drastically reduced.

I hope to hear from you soon and that you address my concerns and genuinely take them into consideration.

Thanks for your time,

Me :)

I was an optician for 15 yrs, I can fix your sight problem. The back of Jones jersey looks the same in all the pictures, (bunched up) but I can take the pics into photoshop and lighten them to prove it. Your boy should have been flagged pure and simple. I assure you it is your crimson glasses affecting your vision.

Several key problems with Kiffin's behavior. Second offense of criticizing SEC coaches, officials, etc. in the media (against SEC regulations). Like the first offense where he criticized Meyer for cheating when Meyer did not cheat, he is also quite incorrect in at least some of his criticisms of the officiating. In addition, Kiffin has at least strongly implied, if not flatly stated, that he thinks the officials intentionally favor(ed) Bama and Florida (conspiracy theorist BS). To make matters worse Kiffin essentially said that Slive's reprimands are meaningless. He's probably lucky Slive did not give him a thorough plublic chewing out.

No one from Alabama should ever come on a rivals board and talk about obeying rules. Alabama has been embarrassing the SEC and college football for years with their cheating ways, and do not have any rights to talk about rules.

@Tidal Surge

You guys have a bye week this week, don't you? Does that mean you're going to be around trolling all week?

I almost wish Lane would say something else and get suspended for the Carolina game. I think the team would come out looking for blood if that happened.

Just dropped Hamilton an email asking him to make a public announcement backing our coach.

I don't think Slive would try and suspend Kiffin, the University would fight back and if there IS *cough* "questionable" officiating, it might come out in the fight.

Two things about officiating:

1) They often get it wrong.

2) There is nothing you can do about it.

I believe the "questionable" officiating has already been brought to light and I truly HOPE that something is done about it.
