Kiffin Proven Wrong About Talent...

All the guys that got drafted excelled under Kiffin and several of them were mediocre before his arrival. Dan Williams was pretty good, but really took it to the next level in 2009. Chris Scott, McClendon, and Montario Hardesty I'm sure will tell you Kiffin and his staff improved their draft stock quite a bit. And Crompton, I mean come the hell on. The only player I feel like failed to improve in 2009 was Daniel Lincoln. Sadly, that led to a couple of losses or more for us.

Coaching was good at times and questionalbe (Auburn, UCLA) at times. I think more than anything the last staff did a much better job preparing them for games physically and mentally than Fulmers staff had done in years, but game day coaching could have been better.

The UCLA and Auburn games could have gone a lot differently if Crompton had played as well early as he did late. And the Auburn game was exactly the type of game that a UT team from recent years would normally let become a blowout. Instead, they kept in it and managed to make the final deficit a number that could have been overcome if Daniel Lincoln had made his kicks.

Even though there was huge holes, it does seem a little odd that 1/4 to 1/3 of the starters from last season are going to the nfl, but UT went 7-6.

I'm wondering if some of you guys are going to use this same logic when evaluating CDD next season. The list of players that will show significant production improvements this season will be quite long. We can start with T. Poole.

When you look at what we were playing on the offensive line along with the depth problems and injuries at LB, what is odd about it?

I think this season will show how much of an impact Chaney had on the offense last year. I have heard from several people that Kiffin really leaned upon him as a resource and I've never heard from anyone that he was a "figurehead" OC. Most of what I've heard has been very different.

But agree to disagree we shall.

This seems to make the most sense to me. Honestly, I can't figure out why CLK would hire an OC if he was just going to ignore him all season. CLK had ultimate control and was calling plays but I don't think he brings Chaney in unless he thinks he can help. Keep in mind he was co-offensive coordinator at USC so he was used to a collaborative environment.

I don't think Kiffin was a lousy HC. He had a lousy game against VT in the bowl but for the most part I really liked his coaching style. I think most people dislike Kiffin and they let that cloud their judgment of his ability to coach. I for one will not miss his antics off the field but I will miss how he approaches the game offensively. DD is the coach now anyway so what's the point in worrying about it.

Highly doubt that.

I would say that he is still showing that '05 team. Anything related to the University of Tennessee is dead to him.

From the jump he tried to turn us into the "USC of the south".

Putting up pictures of Reggie Bush and having videos of those teams running on the video monitors, it was despicable.

I do however agree with some that the coaching job last year was very good, I wouldn't say great, that is using the term lightly I believe.

You can hate the man if you want but we all know that if he were to stay, that UT would have been a very dangerous team in the very near future.

He has stated since going to USC that he has showed both current USC players and players he is recruiting to USC highlights of both Montario Hardesty and Eric Berry.

This assessment coming from the person who thinks “Great Teams” are not defined by Wins and Losses.

:eek:lol: Is eric the one who said the ’05 team was “great”?

EDIT: Found his comment:

I would say that our '05-'06 team was a great team, that just didn't have it on the field.

That ’05 team never played in ’06 since they didn’t even make a bowl. But they were great? OK.

We had stars and we also had to play walkons on our offensive line and had our linebackers decimated by injury.

Perhaps we could if you would share whatever hallucinogen you were on when you made those post.

All I am saying, is that if you take football wins and losses that seriously, then you'll miss the bright spots on the team and not appreciate them as much if they aren't doing so hot. I can't be that black and white, because there as just too many things to pay attention to other than the obvious.

Sure they didn't make a bowl, but they were a pretty close knit group of guys that enjoyed playing together. If it were all about wins and losses, then we should all be on xanax right now based on results of the past few years.

He said it in a radio interview. There's no reason for him to say that if he wasn't doing it.

I heard that Kiffin called plays with much input from Cheney. Actually heard that at the start of the season Kiffin would at times call a play and a protection scheme that would not work at all and would get an "cough, cough" from Cheney to let him know. Very glad we kept Cheney on staff.

As for Kiffin being responsible for the players getting drafted, maybe, maybe not. Either way it doesnt matter to me...whether he helped develop them or not he still had 6 drafted NFL players and a few other free agent signees on the roster and only managed 7 wins. Far from overachieving IMO.

Don't put too much stock into players being drafted in relation to wins and losses. Florida had the most. They didn't win the Championship. Oklahoma had 3 of the first 4 picks. USC was tied for second. Iowa had 6. And don't count the FA signings. Just being from an SEC school alone gets you a shot.

I get your point, but there is no way the first person these guys thank is Kiffin. They have played football under GREAT coaches for years and are where they are because
A. Elite athletic ability
B. Great work ethic

Kiffin helped make crompton what he was we wouldnt have Jackson and Brown if it wasnt for both Kiffins. The only good lineman we had were Douglas McClendon and Scott if Crompton played the whole season like he did the second half we would have beat UCLA Florida and Auburn. Our talent was good no doubt about it but it took a while for the talent to show.

Like it did at the end of the year against VT? Kiffin was not a great field general...his dad was lost once the LBs went down. It seems Monte needed those guys badly for his scheme to work i.e. he was not creative enough which is normal for a guy his age.

Kiffin is an amazing recruiter. Meyer and Saban are the only ones in football on the same level as him. Dude cannot flat out get 17 year olds to come play for him.
