Kiffin opens fall camp with answers

I don't think Slive wants to sanction any of his member schools, for sure....but just as the other schools circled the wagons to go after Bama, if Kiffin starts having too much success and something smells funny, I wouldn't be surprised to see some interesting alliances formed.....Not saying that will happen, just throwing a scenario out there where Slive would be forced into looking closer
The SEC office didn't really carry the ball in the Alabama investigation, the NCAA did. No sane commissioner is going to declare war on one of his own members. Slive has already run one league where people whined and moaned about the tactics of the conference's most visable coaches. He did squat. I can't imagine things being any different now.

When they hired new coaches, they needed to hire all new sports writers for knoxville at the same time. Rare that there is a positive story pertaining to the Vols, its a shame.

Sports writers aren't paid to be shills for the UTAD. That's what Tiffany Carpenter gets paid to do.

Who said anything about being a shill? Read SEC teams local news, then get back to me, you will see what I mean.

Yeah, ask Tommy Tuberville and Mike Shula how "fair" the media in Alabama was to them. When you're done doing that, ask Billy Gillispie about all the verbal bouquets he got from the media in the Commonwealth.

I'm not the target of Hat....not sure how I should feel about this...

:dunno:
You should feel like you're doing your job properly. The role of the media is not to be cheerleaders. There's nothing more useless than a sports department populated by people who think it's their job to fluff the home team.

It' all good. Hat doesn't have targets, just, "stumblealongs." He won't disagree with every poster on every post. It's just if he "stumblesalong" any post he disagrees with, he'll let you know. There's no intentional malice in his posts, just a disagreement here and there. Our get-togethers, when we all meet in person, shows that we all are kind people.

1) I guess that you are happy with Hyams?

2) Are you forgetting about the basketball blogs?

1. No, because I think an alleged "insider" should have information less than a week old.
2. Griff is a Pearl mark, not a UT fan. There's a difference.

A Pearl Mark? Look, Hat, the truth is there hasn't been a whole lot negative to say about Pearl since he has been hired...and when there has been, I have...

I covered the Crews & Ramar stuff to the max, and I have done story after story on the Vols losing Selby

I do try to maintain a positive relationship with Pearl -- as I do all the coaches I cover -- but they know I have a job to do. No need to be a butthead while doing it, you know?

Trying to pass Steve Pearl off as an actual legitimate D-I player indicates to me you're a little less objective than you think. I'd also say there's a little more negative about this staff than you let on in your post. The halfcourt offense has never been much better than pedestrian and the closest thing to a competent point guard this staff has ever signed was a converted shooting guard they only got because Jim Calhoun, Kelvin Sampson, and Tim Floyd decided he wasn't worth the trouble. I'm perfectly comfortable admitting I flat don't like Pearl and that may color my opinion. However, I think it's disingenous for people to write about Cal's relationship with WWWes while giving Pearl a pass for palling around with guys like the Pumps.

I'd agree the half-court offense has been an issue -- but of course it has! Pearl's teams have been geared toward pressing and transition offense.

That said, it did improve last season as CHism improved his inside game.

And the Vols continue to lead the SEC in scoring, so....it's not that bad?

I'd have more of an issue with the halfcourt defense, particularly last season when UT was overmatched at the point.

But of course it was! Two point guards, Ramar and West, were unexpectedly not with the team.

Now, you can put some of that on Pearl, for sure.

But all things considered, I think the guy has done a pretty good job with Tennessee basketball....we're pickin a little bit, you know?
