Kiffin somewhat deserves this.....but it isnt a revelation or a "new" thing for ESPN and every other news place to blow everything out of proportion for a story. That is their job.....it gets viewers and stirs on controversy and web page hits. Period. If/when Kiffin starts winning 10 games a year and beating UGA, Bama, and UF semi- regularly....he will be able to say and do whatever he wants, and be treated like a genius, just like Meyer and Saban. If we win the games we should this year and pull off an upset or two all those Around the Horn dumb asses will be all over his jock, talking about how he has "changed the recruiting and self marketing game". Bank on it.

Unless you're talking about Leno or Letterman an interviewer or reporter 'with tact' is not doing his job.

fyp

baiting someone into a recruiting violation, when you are criticizing that same person for that very issue is trash. As the "premier" sports outlet, you should hold yourself to a higher standard than that. That's bush league...

I just played this show back on Tivo.

I thought that was a great interview, so I don't understand why some of you are down on ESPN for doing it.

The best part of the show was really the part about the Big 10 trying to rebuild its image. Having Kiffin and UT all around that segment (before and after) was great publicity for the program.

If you are Kiffin and you have all these questions about the program going on, what you need most is an opportunity to respond to them. That's exactly what ESPN provided. On the 'baiting' issue, what the reporter did was to provide Kiffin with a chance on national TV to show he knew how to respond. That's good for Kiffin and good for us.

So, thanks to ESPN for covering the Vols. We're a 5-7 team who wouldn't see any airtime if not for all these sideshow events. As is, they can't give us enough time.

Great interview, Coach Kiffin!

Go Vols!

I don't understand why you invite someone on a show and bash them, lame. Kiffin will shut them up by producing W's.

sure this is one way to look at it, and i guess on some level, it's true.

but he has created a situation where he has to win a game he's not supposed to or finish a little better than most have suggested he will finish for any of this to matter.

again, i don't think anyone expected us to beat a Fl or Bama anyway, but if we get beat badly, and we likely will at least by Florida, all of this stuff will come right back to the front and center even though it's 6 months old or better.

all this pub is great right now. but it cant turn quickly, as can opinions, if there's nothing behind the bravado.

and that's not necessarily me talking, but i'm just getting myself ready for what will surely happen when/if we lose some games.

in the era of the "here and now" or 'what have you done for me lately', this may be a little longer of a year than some would have wanted if all this stuff doesnt' go away with some wins on the football field.

so in the end, despite us getting talked up thru out the off season, saturdays in the fall will be what matters. and i'm afraid that this fall isn't going to be enough to quell some grumblings about Kiffin and his 'approach' if you know what i mean.

at this rate, he's either going to be a gigantic goat or a genius. the grey area is quickly fading, at least in the eyes of national media.

watched it last night and thought the same. I really wish CLK had said something like "Do you remember the first segment of the show and what we discussed? You asked if I knew the rules and I said I did. Now you ask me to comment directly on a recruit? Really? Next question."

the good news, however, is that with his buyout, he's not going anywhere anytime soon, so if for no other reason than economics, patience will rule the day, and he will have ample time to get his players in here and impliment his plan on how he wants this program run.

and he does have a plan. and it will take longer than one year for anyone to see the results.

so, keep the big picture, pay attention to how they recruit, and what they look like when they actually play. i sill expect a more intense and better attitude on the field, even if w's dont' come right away.

And Kiffin thankfully chose the high road and gave a very solid, professional answer instead. Had he taken the ahole route so many on here want, it wpould have made everything ten times worse.

All part of a days work. I have little doubt that he will have a prosperous tenure at UT. The media absolutely loves Kiffin. Remember, if he didn't attract viewers he wouldn't be on.

yeah I realize it was wishful thinking but I do have to commend him because I would have had a hard time with that answer

I agree with this statement--and would add that the difference will come down to what this staff does best: recruiting and development.

We'll be eating crow this offseason, but that's to be expected. Our first bit of evidence or retaliation will be an outstanding recruiting class for 2010. Then, somehow, another one in 2011 after the 2010 season stinks as well.

It's a long road back to glory.

Interview went well IMO, ESPN just asked the questions that has been going on with the team, and Kiffin answered then all very honestly. Even though most of the questions were about the mistakes that Kiff has made since entering the program, except for the one concerning Marve.

The question about Marve rattled me...IT'S ESPN! They had of known that Kiffin could not comment on this, why bother wasting time on it? Other than that...I enjoyed hearing what Kiff had to say.

agreed on all parts.

but don't you think he may be making it tad harder on himself having to answer these kinds of questions rather than questions on where we are as a program? or is he happy with the direction we're headed in? what did he get out of Spring Practice? or about recruiting success etc, etc, etc....

anything other than questions about violations, player defections, as characterized by the media in smoe locals, or upsetting rival coaches etc....

i guess, even though i do think Kffin and co. will get it done eventualy, i'm getting over the weekly fodder.

yes but how many times would they interview the new coach of a 5-7 football team (that was just not even that good last year) when the defending NC is in their same division? I'm not sure but I don't think I've seen much of Illinois, Colorada, K St, etc getting close to the amount of airtime as UT

like i said, i think as far as exposure is concerned, mission accomplished.

at some point though, i would like to see the conversations about Tennessee and Kiffin move on to what he's doing to make this program successful again, rather than being subjected to the line of questions he got yesterday.

i don't think that's unreasonable.

"Yesterday the circus was taken to a new level. Secondary violations happen every day and some schools have self reported as many as 30 in one year. Recently, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama are just a few SEC schools to report such violations to the NCAA.

However, these instance don't make the front page and don't place their coaches on shows to answer questions about the incidents. Kiffin's interest is understandable to an extent, as I believe he relishes the spotlight.

Nearly every secondary violation that Tennessee has reported since Kiffin arrived has made mainstream sports news. ESPN"s Chris Low, who covers the SEC, has written a column on every violation at UT.

Kiffin has appeared on shows like College Football Live and Pardon The Interruption multiple times to answer questions about these violations.

Yesterday, ESPN's College Football Live took covering this subject to another level. The opening question of the interview with Lane Kiffin was, "Coach, how would a guy like Robert Marve fit into your program?".

I understand covering violations, I understand criticizing someone when they have been wrong, and Kiffin has done plenty of that. But, trying to purposely trap a coach on national television into committing a violation is unprofessional and out of line. That goes for any coach of any school.

Kiffin didn't lose his composure, "Well, unfortunately now that he's a recruited student athlete again I'm not allowed to comment on that situation.", Kiffin retorted.

Much to the dismay of ESPN, who has a track record of trying to make itself part of the news instead of reporting it, Kiffin didn't fall for the unnecessary attempt."
