For the past 3 or 4 years, I would be on here in the summer and see thread after thread, post after post, and article after article, about how much Fulmer was complimenting such and such a player or unit. The usual pre-season atta boys, which are totally meaningless. All teams and coaches do this and it drives me nuts that it gets reported as "news."
And now I am starting to see it with Kiffin. Does anyone know if he has come out and blasted a player or a unit for not working hard enough or having some great deficiency that needs a ton of work over the next two months or that is going to be the focus of a lot of coaching once camps start up?
I would really respect a coach that had the cajones to say, know what, we really suck at this one thing right now and we are going to shake it up and demand a whole lot more from who or whatever.
He took the number off of Bradon Warren this spring. He said that he had a lot to do to get it back.
Considering he isn't allowed to monitor work outs, he would be crazy to blast a player in front of the press with out witnessing it first hand. Wait til practices start and then we'll see how he discusses the team with the press. For the past 3 or 4 years, I would be on here in the summer and see thread after thread, post after post, and article after article, about how much Fulmer was complimenting such and such a player or unit. Good point. But do you get my main argument here? --- that coaches ought to start demainding more from the players publicly? I mean, you don't have to humilate them --- "This guy sucks" wouldn't be particularly helpful. But certainly "you know, this kid has a ton of talent but if he doesnt get into the weight room real soon and start running some sprints, he's going to find himself watching more than he plays."
I would love that approach.
I can't believe you're comparing Kiffin to Fulmer using this reasoning.
Kiffin kicked MULTIPLE players off the team this Spring for various reasons, either because they were "too soft" or "didn't fit the system" or "not competitive enough" or "had off-the-field problems." And also, quite a few players chose to leave the team because it was "too hard." (Creer, Coleman, Paige).
He publicly called out Morley multiple times before kicking him off the team, and he publicly called out Warren who then actually stepped up and started playing the way he was supposed to.
I didn't mean to compare the two in the sense that Kiffin is following some sort of Fulmer mold on the subject, but I do think that all coaches do this sort of trite b.s. that everything is just wonderful and it boggles the mind that they aren't a bit more critical.

Anyone who knows anything about management knows that you compliment in public and counsel in private; it's called "having your players back" also, where you tell them what they need to do to get better but don't shame them in front of the fans. It's up to the player to respond and get better.
