Kiffin is surprised by negative recruiting in SEC

Lets not get into this again, anyway:

According to Giles, Reaves pointed to a brochure photo of Tennessee’s championship rings and said: “That’s what I want. I want one of those right there. That’s something you can’t get at South Carolina.”

Whether you think it's true or not, that is negative recruiting.

give example

Reaves allegedly told Jarvis Giles, that he left SC for TN to compete for championships.

I mean he wasn't lying. It's not like SC's ever won anything. That is technically negative-recruiting, though, when you take shots at other programs.

Was it dishonest? No.
Negative? Sure. (posted at the same time)

*add-on:
Negative recruiting tactics is a big reason we didn't get Giles.

Doubtful. We seem to have lost him already and that was a desperate angle. Giles was made for Spurrier, though.

I mean, its the truth. I consider negative recruiting when an opposing coach tells a player that the other coach won't play him or will move him to a different position. When a coach speaks for the other coach, that's what I consider negative recruiting.

Being honest is negative? I think it is positive to tell a young recruit the truth.

Well the truth in this case is someone's opinion. You can be smart and funny and say USC will never win a championship (because we never win any) but the fact is it's possible. Most negative recruiting nowadays is based on the truth anyway. For example a coach will tell a receiver to not go to a running team because all they do is run the ball. It's the truth but it's also considered negative recruiting because you're sabotaging the other team's recruiting efforts.

negative recruitig is trying to get a kid to back out of somewhere. telling him the coaches are gonna be fired or implying that they will be on probation or sanctions while he is there. its a dog eat dog world. college football is big business

Its possible in the sense that everything is possible. Still, its not very likely.

Recruiting is a form of courtship. You don't tell a girl, "Don't date that guy, he's a tool." Instead, you are better off promoting yourself, instead of trying to tear down your romantic rivals.

It happens in politics, too. One guy has no platform, so he attacks his opponent's weaknesses.

Promoting yourself, by attacking your rivals is something better off for those in a desperate situation. You are better-served focused on your own strengths, rather than your opponents' faults.

Back to the article...All the q & a's with CLK today have been quite informative. It makes you realize how dedicated he is to getting back to the top when he talks about only holding his baby boy 2 times and "getting back out there." I'll be happy for him after NSD so he can get back home for a bit before he has to go back to work with the team.

Right. Recruiting is about selling a player to your school, not unselling a player from another. Thanks for taking the orange glasses off:clap:

Reeves did slip to negative recruiting...albeit a minor bit of it...but I'm willing to bet it is the only instance of it with this new staff. Hang on to that if you want IHO4, but you got Giles, it didn't matter, so quit whining.

Us having a history of winning compared to SCar is one of our strengths though.

I mean, it is negative, but its not as bad as some things out there like, "Oh the coach is going to retire and the new coach will play you at CB in a couple years. Why not just stay here, win a title, and play at WR?"
