Kiffin Failing? How to Tell (the entire series merged)

I would prefer the fans would stop spinning this.

UT is 2-3 and appears to be on the path of another losing season. It's not what the coaches, the players, or the fans want. It is what it is. Doesn't mean Kiffin won't start turning things around next year. But this season has been a bust so far.

My only concern is how long does CLK plan to stay here? What ties does he have to this team, this university and the people of East Tennessee? We hired outside of the family and I question his loyalty to us. I know I am a skeptic on this subject, but it just makes me uneasy about the future. I hope CLK stays and becomes a VOL in his heart, but right now..I don't know.

Part Three - Preliminary Results

Everyone, including me, is very excited about recruiting efforts to date by the new staff. But, to date, they are not quite up to the standard they have set for themselves for the 2010 class:

Average star ratings as of Oct 7:
USC 3.90
Texas 3.87
Florida 3.85
Tennessee 3.63

Long ways to go until National Signing Day. Lots of irons in the fire. Tennessee has more 4 and 5 star prospects still on their board than anybody in the country. But this is the stat to keep your eye on while the painful losses mount. Even 3.63 is a top 10 class and gets you back in the New Years Day Bowl discussion.

But, Kiffin failing? Magic Eight Ball says "very doubtful"

I think that's exactly right. It may not ultimately work out, but I think that's his plan, and I am absolutely certain that it is at least 2.5 seasons too early for anyone to pass judgment on whether this was a good hire.

Where you from Dudley?

very thoughtful and thorough analysis. totally agree w/your, and the magic 8 ball's, final assessment, though i can't help but think that there is also a difficult to quantify coaching element once the recruits are landed.

i am on board w/coach k and company, and look forward to them winning due to good coaching of great recruits.

People are just saying not to give up on the staff 5 games into their tenure because good things are coming. When people like Posi are constantly saying the sky is falling then threads like this are needed to keep things in perspective.

I firmly believe we are heading in the right direction.

Saban, Miles and Meyer were bad hires for the same reason. Ray Goff @UGA, Mike DuBose @Bammer and John Bunting at UNC, now those in family hires were brilliant.

It's only a bust if you believed that the new staff was going to come in here and work miracles with this team. If you honestly believed that, you need therapy and meds. The coaches have made great strides in getting the players to believe in themselves and have enthusiasm and heart. This is not a quick fix, what has been put in place is to build for the long term. Nobody knows what amount of success Kiffin will have at UT. He may have the same level as Pete Carrol does at SoCal and stay here for 10-15 years. Maybe more. His scheme may flop miserably and he gets canned in 3. Nobody knows. Point is, realism dictates that this season was not to be a banner year. Just a transition year.
Deal with it, support the team and buck fama.

Nice post. People seem to quickly forget anything good Kiffin says. Not sure why we can't buy in to this...the people in Bama bought in to "the process".

I am thinking.... being the east Tennessee country boy that I am, a far simplier and maybe better way to determine if Kiffin is failing is to wait till the end of his fourth year and see what his win and loss record is..... just saying

I'm with you to some extent.

You just can't get too caught up in stars. They're subjective, and primarily handed out by guys who've never coached or had any professional role in college athletics.

There's little science behind the stars. The boys at Rivals might consider the kid a 3-star talent...but, Pete Carroll evaluates him and makes him an offer, and suddenly he's got a 4th star. Hell, maybe Carroll doesn't really even offer...maybe the kid just says Carroll offered...he's still probably getting a 4th star...

I'm not concerned with the difference between our 3.63 average and Florida's 3.85 average. The Super Bowl, national championships, and former first round picks affiliated with our coaching staff is assurance enough for me.

I believe the jury will be out on Kiffen for a while. He has given the team more focus and spirit. i admire the limited penalties, and the running game is much improved. I think if you had a QB you could easily be 4-1. I am predicting 5-7 for this year and maybe 7-5 for next. The system will be in it's second year, you should see a big improvement overall, but, unless you get a good juco QB transfer, or Stephens morphs into something great you still have a one dimensional offense, and someone will need to help BB in the backfield next year.

i can't help but think that there is also a difficult to quantify coaching element once the recruits are landed.

As I commented in one of the threads over on the recruiting board, I think Willie Martinez could win a Conference Championship at Florida, Texas or USC. See Brown, Mack for another example.

Seriously, when you get to the top 40 BCS conference schools or NFL level, I think just about everybody has good coaches, very few rise above (Saban). Athletes then dictate the outcome.
