Part One - The Plan

I'm not promising you how many wins, how many championships. I can't do that. I don’t know that. There are too many variables, but I can tell you this right now: No one is going to outwork us. No one is going to outwork me as a head coach and no one is going to outwork our staff that we put together. That's the promise I'm giving you, the wins will come after that.
Lane Kiffin, Introductory Press Conference

"Every coach I considered could get us eight, nine, 10 wins a year. But Lane was the one guy I felt had a plan to get us 12 or 13 wins and a shot at a national championship. I just thought he was unique."
Mike Hamilton

As we kind of went through the interviews, I kept going back to the recruiting component. The part that I really kept coming back to was his competitiveness as it related to recruiting and the recruiting process.”
Mike Hamilton

"As a recruiting coordinator, I’m excited to have all the tools necessary to recruit the best players in the country. Hard work, hard work. Outwork your opponent. There’s no one that will outwork us. No one. You better wake up early and go to bed late."
Ed Orgeron

The message we should take away is that UT did not hire a coach that would come in with today's version of the 90s run-and-shoot quick fix for our woeful offense (Malzahn/Leach). We are sacrificing short term pain for long term gain. Establishing a system come hell or high water. Focusing on recruiting. Building a foundation for success at the highest level.

AMEN! Recruiting is the key to college fb. You have to get the best talent out there.
And stars don't tell all the story.. Guess who was rated #2 behind Mark Sanchez when he went to USC? Our own JC.

I think that's exactly right. It may not ultimately work out, but I think that's his plan, and I am absolutely certain that it is at least 2.5 seasons too early for anyone to pass judgment on whether this was a good hire.

Boo! Propaganda!

Kiffin's stubborn...Stephens is a ginger-Staubach, and our staff is too dumb to put him in the game...

Monte's a has-been....The Tampa 2 is wiggity-wack compared to the 'Stanger....

My only concern is how long does CLK plan to stay here? What ties does he have to this team, this university and the people of East Tennessee? We hired outside of the family and I question his loyalty to us. I know I am a skeptic on this subject, but it just makes me uneasy about the future. I hope CLK stays and becomes a VOL in his heart, but right now..I don't know.

Part Two - The Measuring Stick

It is clear that the Kiffin plan hinges on dramatic recruiting success. Think 1990s Vol recruiting success or better. I think that our competitiveness this year with our obvious depth and passing game limitations show that this staff has some coaching ability. So can we get the recruits to which we aspire?

Well how do you quantifiably measure recruiting success? Aren't there too many variables? Busts? Coaching em up? Who's better Scout or Rivals? Don't they miss on kids all the time? etc.. etc..

Well, I've always disliked Scout and Rivals class rankings because they are dependent on class size, need :)ohmy:) and balance :)crazy:). I look at the average star rating. Then because more data is better than less data, average the rivals and scout star ratings. Then look at the data over the years 2002-2009. What you will find is that three schools consistently rank among the top tier or above the top tier in average recruit star rating:
USC
Florida
Texas

My simple-minded conclusions?

1. Recruit all 4 star recruits and you win - big
2. Kiffin obviously thinks he can recruit like these 3 schools. And this gives you a simple metric to tell if he is doing so.

He will recruit top talent here. When he decides to leave, the cupboard will be stocked for the next staff. Which is exactly the opposite of how the Fat Coach left it.
