These types of stories will lose credibility when
A) Kiffin backs his mouth up and wins games

B) Kiffin stops being the national media favorite to discredit
Simple fact of life here: Kiffin ran his mouth, as you pointed out in your article, and he's set himself up for exactly this type of story to be run with impunity. When he shows that he isn't a "one trick pony" the media will be more hesitant to try swipes at him. He's seen as a clown on the national stage, at least at this point.
