There is a dangerous trend emerging here. Having a chip on your shoulder is one thing, and that's okay. And even making a mistake and fessing up, that's fine.
But taking cheap shots and then having people excuse it? Or worse yet applaud you for it?
This is taking on a new and very ugly life of its own at UT. Hope someone has the smarts to let Kiffin know that, despite what they may be saying, it is not cool to outright literally call another coach a "cheater" and be wrong about it.
Its not cute anymore and if he mistakenly thinks that he's now given license to offend by false accusation, then I suspect it will be UT that regrets it, not the rest of the conference.
Kiffin will beat Florida first year guarantee
Put a dime on your head. You're needle is obviously stuck. We KNOW; he called your whinin' coach a cheater.
For saying the exact same thing over and over and over and over again you are now being officially reprimanded by the VolNation. Now apologize and move on. You know, like Lane and the rest of the world have.
What many of our rivals don't understand is that what happens with our team chemistry, attitude conditioning and coaching b/n now and our first game will have much more bearing on what happens with our wins and losses than what Kiffin ever says in public.
This part is most definitely true. While expectations will be somewhat muted this year for your team, if you get blown out by Florida, Alabama, UGA, and lose to someone like Vandy or Kentucky, there are going to be a lot of Vols fans who look back on this moment as a harbinger of ill-preparedness rather than hopeful bravado.
Its the Vols fans who keep this thing alive by continuing to try to change the story from how their newbie coach screwed up to how their newbie coach don't take nuthin from nobody.
As opposed to the last four years where we got blownout and were quiet about it? What's the difference? I much rather go down swinging.
Bottomline is that Kiffin has to win. If he doesn't then we just start over in four or five years and he knows it. That fact will never change regardless of what he says.

I guess it depends on what it looks like. I mean, if UT comes out fighting and are simply outmanned for a year, that's not going to be seen by most as a reflection on Kiffin. One of his upsdies appears to be that he and his staff are going to be able to recruit very well, so that's not the issue.
But if they make lots of mistakes, turnovers, penalties, if they are out of shape, get winded, lose games they should win, look like crap on special teams, then that will be the tell tale sign of things to come.
Look, I have no clue whether Kiffin can manage this or not. For all I know, in a few years UT could very well be a consistent competitor for the BCS (or whatever its called at that time). Kiffin could become the most sought after coach of all time after leading UT back to prominence.
All I am saying is let's not give him credit for things he hasn't done yet. Cautious optimism, not blind faith, would seem to be the order of the day. And Kiffin's comments the other day will not score a single point on the field come September.

Really? Because all lg1 has talked about is how bad it's going to be next year because of what Kiffin said. Seems to me, Kiffin's comments are going to score 800 points next year for Florida.

Once the game starts, none of the players are going to be thinking about what Kiffin said. The fans..now that's another story, but I don't think it will in any way affect what the score of the game is.
To lawgator - I can't speak for everyone else, but where my confidence comes from with the new staff is that I believe this staff is hungry. The former staff got very complacent. They were outworked and outcoached by the new kids in the SEC. This staff is different.
They have already challenged the team physically. Quotes from the players can backed this up. They are running a full month early than the old staff had them running.
They are non-stop as far recruiting goes. We have the largest recruiting budget in the country and have, by many recruiting experts, one the most talented recruiting staffs in the country. Putting those two together is a deadly combo.
We have one of the best defensive minds in the game. The NFL game that is. If you don't think that the college game will be a little slower than NFL for Monte then you fooling yourself.
This is not the same old Tennessee. I fully believe this staff will not be outworked and I think that will rub off on the players. Many of our rivals got used to a Tennessee team that was ill prepared, under conditioned and less talented than our rivals. From what I have seen so far that old Tennessee team is fading away.
onevolfan, I hope you know I was being sarcastic. But, if we took lg1's advice, I guess UT would have to fold up shop and run for the hills.
