Kiffin defends physical practices GoVolsXtra
Those physical practices may have caught up with Tennessee’s football team on Friday, the fourth day of preseason practices.

Most noticeably absent from practice were starting weak-side linebacker Rico McCoy and left cornerback Brent Vinson, “Rico, we’re looking at his knee and had him checked out (Friday) morning and some tests during practice, so I don’t know for sure yet,” Kiffin said. How about Vinson?“Looking at his hamstring, couldn’t practice today,” Kiffin said.

Freshman running back Bryce Brown, the Vols’ marquee recruit of this year’s class, took part in some of Friday’s practice but was held out of contact.“(Brown) just had a slight concussion that the trainers wanted to run some tests on,” Kiffin said.

Sophomore tailback Tauren Poole, slotted at No. 2 on the depth chart behind senior Montario Hardesty, went down Friday during the seven-on-seven drills. Poole stayed on the ground for more than 10 minutes, was helped off the field, and didn’t return. His injury appeared to be to his upper left leg. “It looked like all it was was a cramp, but I don’t know,” Kiffin said. “We moved the drill, so we’ll see.”

Today, it will be full speed ahead for the Vols, who will practice for the first time in pads at Neyland Stadium.
Kiffin has no plans of slowing down. “We’re going to scrimmage,” Kiffin said. “We’re going to tackle and see who can really tackle, see who can play off cut blocks and play real football when everything else is going on.

Anderson Steps Up: Sophomore cornerback Anthony Anderson, former standout at Austin-East High School, got a chance to show his stuff due to Vinson's injury. Anderson took full advantage.
He intercepted a pass by Jonathan Crompton and returned it for a touchdown during seven-on-seven drills.

Friday Highlights: After Crompton threw the pick to Anderson in the seven-on-seven drills, he completed a pass across the middle to Marsalis Teague and then threw a touchdown pass to Gerald Jones, who dunked the football over the crossbar of the goalpost. … During the 11-on-11 drills, Hardesty broke a long run up the middle for a touchdown and was hardly touched. … Prentiss Waggner had a nice interception on a pass by Crompton early in the 11-on-11 drills.

Seriously, the people wanting to criticize the physical nature of the practices need to either realize that contact and injuries are a part of the game or they should just go kill themselves. I mean, c'mon... we had 3 players hurt in the last month in non-contact related activities. Injuries happen.

Kiffin is definitely doing the right thing. I'm glad he's not backing down from the criticism.

People criticizing physical practices are more than likely the same people that don't believe in fiscal responsibility either.

Anyone that criticizes these tough practices needs look no further than your hated rival.

There is a reason, besides talent, good recruiting, etc... that UF has done so well.

The minute Urban Meyer stepped foot on campus, he demanded 100% in every practice, made them extremely difficult, and highly physical.

Since then, UF has been one of the toughest teams in the country, especially in the 4th quarter. Tennessee will be the same way. If the staff is given enough time. Injuries are just an unhappy part of that. It's totally worth it.

Unfortunately, some of our own don't realize this.

I hope we dont loose everyone. But would rather have the freshmen introduced to the hitting of SEC football now instead of game day.

I like the kids being physical in practice, it leads to winning games, big games at that...We may not go out and win every game this year, but even the games we lose from the sounds of it people will say, "Wow, they really came out and hit us in the mouth"

If these guys are getting hurt in physical practices against the 2's, they are going to be complete pussies once we start our conference games. We will have to bring multiple doctor's to every game.

Necessary evil. Its true about florida and bama, their practices are extremely physical. What worries me is we don't have the numbers in the lines they do. I think kiffin is smart enough to know when its time to back it down a bit. Hopefully they're not a mash unit coming out of fall camp.

Im a huge fan of physical practices too. Practice everday like it's a game. Anyone think these injuries might come from something Ausmus has implemented that smith wasnt willing to? I know it might be a stretch but i read some rumors during the switch that indicated as much. Just rumors i know but were on a msg board so just thought id get ur opinions on that. I think as longer as we can maintain a decent injury ratio then the new punch em in the mouth practice style is gonna only help once the season starts

I'm not sure if you're saying the rumors are BS or questioning if there were those rumors, but I'm assuming its the former. FWIW I agree with you if my assumption is true. Of course all I've heard concerning the switch is heresay. There was something else about Smith making the weight room off-limits to players who then had to earn entry. Was there anything else more substantial that has leaked out? If not, it's about time for somebody involved to pen a biography with the details.

I'll only be concerned if Dan Williams, Eric Berry, or one of our starting O-line gets knocked out.

Otherwise, this is definitely the way to go. Got to get away from the jelly @ss football we'd been playing the past several years. No more club med practices... and as much as I hate to give credit to florida and alabama... they've had it figured out, and its showed. Gotta bust some @ss in practice.

:salute:
The injury that ended my football playing days was in practice. Was pouring rain and were running some drills inside. Injuries happen.. just part of the game. You should be happy we are running physical practices, you sure don't want us trotting out on the field to play not ready for contact.. do ya???
