i believe that kiffin is putting together an incredible staff. however, i'm completely biased.

so, the way i try and grade whether or not this staff is actually incredible is this way...

if georgia, florida or alabama were to fire their respective coaches today, and hire this exact same staff ut has assembled, would i, as a ut fan, be worried? i would be.

thoughts?

just for the record, when alabama hired saban, i got worried, and that turned out well for them.

I agree with you. I think a lot of the negativity coming from throughout the rest of the conference is anxiety over the fact that one of the giants of the SEC is about to wake up. But I, also, am a tad biased.:salute::peace2:

you're exactly right, when the mud throwing starts, that's when you know you've got a good hire.

The only problem that I have with it (I am biased also) is that I am so use to stability in the program and all that I see with this staff is if we are lucky 5 yrs. The reason I say that is Coach Kiffin is probably going to use this job to send him back to the NFL, his dad is almost 70 so this is probably his last job unless he gets the NFL itch again and Coach "O" already has been a head coach in college and probably won't play 3rd fiddle long. Most all the others on staff have prior NFL experience also; will they be gone in 2-3 yrs? Don't get me wrong I am fired up with the possibilities and I want to play for championships but this looks like at best a 5 yr plan and then we are looking again...

You might be right. Unfortunately, that's what the world of college football has come to these days. It's win now or else. Loyalty is a dying virtue, and that goes both ways.:peace:

What we had with Fulmer is a very rare comodity.
A long life coach is a dying breed in all sports.
We should be grateful that Summit, Pearl, and Fulmer all looked to Tennessee as places they wanted to stay at.
Hopefully Kiffin will do well, get paid well, and decide to make this his home.

Getting to the top and staying on top are two different goals. It's possible this staff could work towards getting there, then be satisfied with the challenge of staying there. But I don't think we'll know til it happens.

We got to witness first hand the sickening feeling of watching a program climb to the top, then get put on cruise control for a decade...

I dont know about that. Kiffin does have kids and says he wants them to grow up in Tennessee. I dont know but after everything that happened with Al Davis I dont think he would want to put up with that again. I am sure Pete Carrol could choose to go to just about any team in the NFL if he wanted to. I think if Kiffin is successful here he just might stay for awhile.

A reaction to hirings is a pretty stupid way to grade a new coach and staff. The staff alone is looking like an NFL combine and lets take the 1 to 3 years to let it play out. I could care less about the GA, FL or AL reactions until I see the score of the games and the action on the field for the next 3 years. If we totally dominate the lines of scrimage in the games and are physical then you will have your answer. My guess is next year we will win more games than expected not because of fear but because of the product Kiffin and staff puts on the field.

The bottom line is that Kiffin and Co is putting together an unprecedented staff that all will fear. It is no measurement of the staff but it is a staff that should be feared on game day preparation, NFL preparation, physical and on the recruitting. Most importantly no kid can go wrong going to Tennessee and that is the attitude Kiffin and Staff are taking.

With this staff we are bring in.. If we can get the right players in here and hopefully keep our players right now ( speculation some might have dipped on classes) then we should be set to compete right there with GA, FL and AL...
I'm still skeptical about next year and a bad season would hurt as bad as a bad season the 2nd year.. So we will see

i love how you say grading a staff by the reaction of other fans is stupid, yet in this post you talk about how we SHOULD be feared. this is the point i was trying to make, if we SHOULD be feared, as you say, then i believe, for the time being, we have hired a relatively good staff.

you essentially contradicted yourself by trying to make two different points.

Why are some of you so sure Kiffin wants to return to the NFL eventually? I'm not saying he will or won't but he said in his initial press conference " My agent's not gonna like me for saying this, but i'm not going back to the NFL" What are you guy's basing your thoughts on? Just curious.
