Keys to Victory over Bama

ive talked about match ups all year. and this game...it's again about match ups.

this is the first team we've played so far that i'd say was appreciably better than us on special teams.

the defense is ridiculously good, but they will give up yards. there are opportunities to win matchups thru the air.

offensively, Hurts brings a new dimension, and if we were 100% healthy on defense i'd give is a fair shot. but being as undermanned as we are on that side of the ball, i'm finding it hard to predict how we'll do. this offense is good. and for the 2nd week in a row, we're facing the best team we've played all year long.

intangibles also hard to predict. i know Neyland will be feeling it...but for how long? we'll need OU/FL game type environment....

it goes w/out saying...we can't be nice and give this team gifts. we do that, they'll say "thanks" and kick our butts.

lastly...this game will be a lot about 1 on 1 match ups. how many wins can we get in the 1 on 1's....we have enough talent to win some of these. and some of these could be difference in the game.

Bama will play 1 on 1 on defense. they'll match up their WR's or TE 1 on 1 with our LB's and DB's. so if i'm looking at something to cling to....in those situations, you don't have to beat the whole Alabama team. you just have to beat THAT guy, 1 play at a time.

do that, and we have a shot. if they win the one on ones, they definitely win.

Everyone seems to forgot one.. the stadium needs to be louder than it has ever been. The players feed off that.

everyone?:p

I don't see why we can't put up 40 or more on bama. a high-scoring offensive shoot-out would favor us more than a low scoring defensive battle,IMO. The Bama D will go out of their way to contain Dobbs and apply pressure. They are very concerned about Kamara's speed and versatility. Since our OL is playing better,(it appears), we need to rise to the occasion and protect Dobbs more than ever. This is where Hurd's blocking ability will help. We've ran some effective screen passes of late and that could burn a hard-charging defense. Bama is likely to shut down our off-tackle running game but they can definitely be beaten in the passing game. Lately, i feel, our go to recievers are Jennings, Byrd, Kamara, Smith, and then Wolf. Croom and Malone aren't holding onto the ball as well as needed and that's a problem within a problem.....we need to protect the ball at all cost! Our defense needs rest between series. In other words we need to play a total game for 60 mins. Being in Neyland will help and Debord fares well against Pruett as was demonstrated in UT's 2015 win over UGA when Kamara caught 2 TD passes. I, like another poster stated, " have that feeling," UT can and is going to win this game and THE BIG ORANGE isn't needing any "pixie-dust" to do so. Speaking of orange, i'd like to see the vols wear all orange this Sat. Let's rock this house!:pepper::yahoo: GO BIG ORANGE :bash: :gun::shaking2: :pepper: :machgun::bammer::yahoo:

Dobbs has to play within himself. I love the kid but after the A&M game....... FALL ON THE DAMN BALL.... they teach this in Jr High... Josh knows better but I credit him for trying to make a play. But still.... FALL ON THE DAMN BALL if we cough it up!

I watched that play over and over and the ball was skirting across the ground and not sure it was easy to just fall on a moving target. Not sure Donna was trying to pick it up and run with it. I'll take another look but it's hard to fault someone who does something based on muscle memory and reaction. Look at Calloway for Florida. He fair caught 2 punts inside his own 5.

I have a hard time being super critical of players when they are trying to make a play. Let it go man.

No offense, and perhaps you are just adding this after seeing all these other keys, but this is like Key #27.

Don't give up more than 21 points to Bama, play a full 60 minutes, not just 30. NO turnovers!

Offensively they are going to attack us behind the line and try to go over our heads. Defensively they will have one goal and one goal only...get the ball.

UT can and should run the ball using all five backs one after the other all game. UT defensively can and should force fumbles and break through to the behind the line and go after Hurts all game long relentlessly.

We win if:

Our secondary doesn't give up the big plays
We are able to run the ball effectively and keep out of 3rd and long
Put bama in 3rd and long
Win the turnover battle
Play for 4 quarters

Bama is very beatable and I think this Vols team has the talent to do it. We just have to stop getting behind so much early and stop shooting ourselves in the foot when we make a big play only to have it negated by a fumble or lack of focus.
