Ok, I'm crazy... I grew up listening to JW on the radio. We were lucky to see one game on tv (then we got Keith Jackson on ABC, which was ok), so even now I'll often listen on the radio rather than watch on tv, it just seems right somehow. When i do watch on tv, i'll usually turn the sound down and listen to the radio broadcast, unless its on CBS. I really like Danielson and even Vern Lundquist, lol. It's kind of like of like going to a ballgame with your old uncle. So, onward...
1. BK was pretty much the big dog TV sports guy in town when JW retired. He was a very logical choice for the job, and I don't think too many were surprised when he got it.
Not necessarily True. Many were outspoken against Bob gettin the job. Some were shocked when he got it just simply because they could see what was coming. 2. JW was one of the great meme-makers in the history of sports broadcasting. He didn't leave much to work with... About the only one BK kept was "IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!!". No brainer. I think "INTO THE CHECKERBOARDS" is a fine phrase to use, NO one else can use that, it's as ALL VOL as you can get.
I could live with INTO THE CHECKERBOARDS. however, what the he!! is a CHEGGERBOARD or CHIGGERBOARD? Bob is trying to hard to have his own "catchphrase" and it sounds ridiculous. I'd rather have an ACCURATE description of the play AS IT IS happening with a basic "touchdown tennessee!".
3. I disagree with the assertion that BK doesn't get excited enough, he's often yelling at the top of his voice. And so what if he's somewhat excited when the other team scores... It's a FOOTBALL GAME. It's supposed to be exciting.
Its Fake Enthusiasm. It sounds as though he randomly raises his voice in excitement during odd moments of the game.
4. Everybody makes mistakes in this job. BK probably makes more than his share, but a poster above makes the point that it's a different job now than when JW was in the booth. Much more info to deal with. However, one I listen for specifically is the "DAY- rick"/" DARE-Rick thing". I have rarely heard that one made, mostly last season.
Everyone does make mistakes. However, his main job is to paint a picture with words of the action happening on the field. The listener should be able to vividly see in their mind what is happening. All Bob gives us is utter confusion. He'll say "ran for a couple" and it'll be a 12-15 yard run. He doesn't keep up to date on clock time either, field position, who is in the game, etc.
5. I love Tim Priest. Not the smoothest, but he has great knowledge and enthusiasm, and he's all-Vol as you get.
Tim Priest is incredibly nice guy but his post game interviews are atrocious. "Bray - You threw an interception. Were you trying to throw the ball at the Florida defender?"
Gotta go get ready for the cookout after the game, with a bit of luck I'll be serving FRIED GATOR TAIL!!! Go VOLS!
Oh, yeah... I'll be watching the game on tv... Sound off! Unless I wanna hear Uncle Vern!
