Kentucky to Offer Donovan $1Million Raise

Kentucky however, has one sport to hang its hat on: men's basketball. They will put a lot of marbles in this basket, because they are COMMITTED to doing whatever it takes to win, this side of cheating.
Tubby's the only one that wasn't cheating.

If your BD this is hard to turn down. He played at UK and now has a chance to go back there and become a UK legend if he can turn the program around. That's not even counting the money. The thing is if he turns it down then no matter who UK gets the fans are going to already be against him. It could be worse than thier love for Tubby. If BD turns it down I wouldn't want to be the "2nd choice"

Correction: he coached at UK, he played at Providence under Ricky P.

The mood in Lex is still manic. People in the know seem to think there is no way Billy leaves Fla. The general public says it is a done deal.

Thank you Bruce Pearl for cutting Iowa off at the pass.

Your right on coaching at UK, my screw up. I think some of it may depen on wether UF wins another title this season. If they do what else does he have to accomplish at Florida? The UK job would offer another challange and we would be at a basketball school instead of a football school.

Historically, Kentucky has had no compunctions about cheating, although Tubby has the reputation of being ethical and I think Mitch is a stand-up guy. Still, a legacy of NCAA violations does not change in just a few years.

We will see how committed Florida is to winning by their response to the Kentucky offer. A $1 million dollar raise plus incentives, putting Donovan at somewhere between $2.5-3.5 per year, is not above market value for a coach with his resume, and it shouldn't be that difficult for Florida to match. I'm actually a little surprised that UK didn't shoot higher.

You think it's manic in Lex? You should try being a moderator on the UK boards. That's why I hang out here sometimes.

I see the media saying saying there's no way Billy leaves, but since when are they people "in the know?" They're guessing like the rest of us. Billy is the only one who can answer the question, and right now, he isn't talking.

Can't wait until Tuesday, though. :p

Questions for you Brian.

If Donovan does not take the job, would it be viewed as an insult by UK fans? Do you think it would hurt in terms of looking for the next candidate? Would the next candidate necessarily have to be offered the same deal else it be insulting to that next candidate?

Sure, if Donovan doesn't go to UK, there will be fear and loathing, hand-wringing and demonization of the coach they espoused as their next Basketball Messiah.

As for me, I'll take it in stride.

The next candidate, it could really hurt, sure. Not getting BD could certainly make the coach search a bit more difficult. I do feel bad for Mitch Barnhart (UK's AD). He has an impossible job in this coaching search.

What I'd be worried about is the same fate that the Gator football team had when Spurrier left. The first three guys turned the Gators down because they realized the expectations were impossible to meet and the guy that came in, Zook, was never given much of a chance to get going.

Tell me who in Florida would really care, honestly. This is Foley's baby and his ego. I still think the main reason the SEC has beefed up their basketball squads is because the ADs and school presidents figured out there was money to be made in March Madness.

Money will not be an issue here...UF can match any offer UK has..it all comes down to if BD wants to take that pressure cooker of a job with sky high expectations or stay where football will be king with less pressure.
