The University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee have an interesting relationship. No other team has beaten the University of Kentucky in basketball more than Tennessee has throughout history, and UK and UT used to have a traditional border-rivalry game that was marked by a beer barrel. The two schools rest on the eastern sides of their respective states, and the two schools are separated by a 2.5 hour (1.5 if you’re Don racing between the two) drive.

Kentucky has traditionally played Tennessee very close in football without actually being able to get over the hump over the past 2 decades or so, and Tennessee, until recently, has had the same frustrating problem with Kentucky in basketball.

Its hard to hate a team you beat every time time you play them :birgits_giggle:

Time's almost up on that streak, my friend.

I would think that some of the Negavols would like the streak to end, just so Phil can get his walking papers after losing to Kentucky.

That beer barrel has been stored away so long, I'm not sure anyone knows where it is.:birgits_giggle:

Kentucky will have its best team in about ten years this year. Sadly for them though the defense still stinks and will give up plenty of big plays.

Still dont have enough talent to beat Tennessee! All streaks come to an end someday though, unfortunantly for Kentucky though if they dont end the streak this year they will have to wait for about another 20. :birgits_giggle:

My high school used to use the saying, "Loved or hated, but never ignored." We used that because, well, we are a pretty great program. When you're a great program, your fans love you and most everyone else hates you. If you're not a great program... see the second half of the saying.

I pretty much hate UK 24-7-365.

You ran a great basketball coach out of town because he wasn't Rupp or Pitino (we'll see how gillespie does without Acie Law's 30 ppg)

Your players' idiocy cost us the Beer Barrell

Billy Jack Haskins nearly gave me a heart attack

One of your fans removed the rearview mirror from my truck in 1995, then punked out when confronted.

I did like it when Hal Mumme was your coach; his hair and his defense were sources of endless amusement.

What leads you to the conclusion that this streak is almost up? UK getting better, UT wallowing in mediocrity, or both? Do you think UK wins this year?

I don't see UT wallowing in mediocrity at all. I see them as a legitimate 9-10 win team that, with luck, could challenge for the SECCG.

I do think that the streak will end this year after last year's close game @ Neyland. The Cats were very, very close to an upset, and I think that having them at Commonwealth could push them over the top. UK is definitely better, as evidenced by 8 wins, including quality wins over Georgia and Clemson.

I pretty much hate UK 24-7-365.

Cool! Give in to your hate!

CBG will do just fine w/o Acie. He's salvaged quite a good recruiting class that Tubby was losing, and after UT has their year this year, the Cats will be right back on top.

It is a myth that Tubby was run out of town. By the way, I agree that Tubby was a great basketball coach, but he was not an elite coach, which is required at the University of Kentucky. I say that not out of arrogance, but because it's what the program's history dictates.

Pretty much, yeah.

Billy Jack Haskins nearly gave me a heart attack

I loved Billy Jack. With a name like that, he could start anywhere in the South as QB1. His gutty "heroics" in that UT game in 1995(?) remind me of what could have been. He was undersized, with marginal QB skills, but he had the heart of a lion.

One of your fans removed the rearview mirror from my truck in 1995, then punked out when confronted.

You should have bashed their heads in.

What defense? In Mumme's years at UK, I never saw a lick of defense.

Coach Moptop's hair is legendary. Don't forget the towel and the wraparound one-way sunglasses, either.

I'm one of the Negavols who would like to see positive change in our program, but it's asinine to mistake that for wanting to see UT lose, ever, especially to the likes of UT-Chatt, Vandy, WKU, EKU or UK.

Let me rephrase that....one of those who wish to see the "immediate retirement" of CPF.

I hate Kentucky, at least as far as the men's football and basketball programs are concerned. They are traditionally one of the dirtiest programs in the SEC (quite an accomplishment,) but it is the general attitude of the fanbase--magnified by the fact that I live amongst it--that elevates my feelings from "disdain" to "hatred." There is an arrogance that, in basketball, views the school's rich tradition in basketball as birthright rather than accomplishment, an attitude that actually denegrades the past championships when they should be honored.

And somehow the attitude seems to have crept onto the football field, where, despite evidence to the contrary, the Wildcat faithful seem to believe each offseason that next year they will be good (except for last year, when they actually did turn out one of their better teams,) simply because they are UK.

Perhaps I am jaded from living in enemy territory for most of my life, but I don't like them. I cheer for Louisville when they play, and I would cheer for Indiana if UK hadn't dropped them because it made the schedule too hard.

As a football first fan, I would just say that there's no arrogance when it comes to football, just a lot of "hope springs eternal." Look up optimist in the dictionary, and you will see my avatar.

By the way, UK didn't drop Indiana in football. That is a myth. It was the reverse. The contract for the series was over, and we had beaten them 10 out of 11 times. Indiana was under new coach Terry Hoeppner at the time, and chose not to renew the series. Why would UK drop a team in a BCS conference from its schedule that it owned through the years?

Hey, I like a good rivalry, too, Cotton. Makes for fun matchups in the fall. Orange ain't my favorite color, either. :)

My sample size for the football arrogance comments probably isn't big enough, but leave it to say that my personal experience indicates a different attitude than the one you express.

As for Indiana, I remember the comments from a UK AD (I believe after the 1-10 year) about how a non-conference schedule that included IU and UofL was just too tough. I do not actually know who dropped who.

And I know I am biased against UK Blue, as evidenced by the fact that, while I think BYU's uni's look OK, I find it horribly offensive to the eye when the 'Cats bring that color onto the football field.
