Wake coach: Pitt QB's fake slide a slippery slope

Ive never seen a fake slide like that but I expect we will be seeing it a lot more in the future. Personally, I don’t believe it was dirty but it does expose something that officials are going to have to really dig into. We don’t want defensive player’s creaming a QB on his way down but then you see a play like this.

At what point does a fake slide cross the line and become dirty?

I understand it’s a subjective determination for officials. Might can introduce a fair catch style action where the QB raises a hand or something to declare themselves down.

I've always advocated for the QB to be treated as any other player on the field, no special treatment. If they did this, then QBs wouldn't get away with crap like that.

Well, I realize that will never happen, soooo IMO, you simply call him down at the spot where he initiated his little fake slide. No penalty and use replay to spot the ball.

Had Hendon Hooker done this move on Henry TT when we played Bama, a lot of those saying it's dirty would have said......"Mama, there goes that man."

Maybe 45 shouldn’t have just given up on the play and stayed in position. He gave up before Pickett went down and wasn’t in danger of hitting him.

I also think there is a lesson in that and the lesson isn't "whatever other guys do is cheating". It ain't that.

I agree. In this case, the defender just assumed the QB was going down, quit on the play and got caught out of position. Still though, I think the fake slide in this era opens up a real problem for officials and defensive players. If a more athletic, Mike Vick like QB starts using this sort of tactic; a defender is damned if he doesn’t close hard. If this sort of tactic is permissible; defenders may not have the option to pull up and may just take the penalty istead of getting posterized.

I don’t think he intended to do that. Looks like he really was going to slide but saw the defender was was not that close so he changed his mind last second.
He admitted he was about to slide and read the defense pulling up and took off. I see it as no different than a runner juking the D to make them think he's cutting back, then he doesn't.

Finish your play and this won't happen. It's not like the guy was right on top off him or he would've stopped him when he slowed up. 45 quit too early and got played.

It’s a good football play, but absolutely should be called down once he gives himself up. Otherwise the defense is basically just 11 dudes standing around.

I don’t understand why people are having a meltdown over this. There is nothing about Pickett’s move that seemed questionable. There are very few times where a QB gets hit as he is starting a slide that results in a flag. Most defenders who are flagged for hitting a QB that slides is after their ass has hit the turf. I can’t believe Twitter is having a cow about this awesome play and move the QB made.

Who is having a “meltdown” over this?

I saw this too and the announcers were all over it how he exploited the rule. It'll be hard to enforce as that is a very subjective call. A slight dip of the hip and one ref will call it then another wont.

Well you could do the same with running out of bounds but you never hear if that being a big deal. We definitely don’t need a rule for it. That’s Dave clawson complaining correct? It feels like that guy is always bitching about something

I would guess that if this isnt immediately addressed this year it will be an issue next year much like flopping was this year. Maybe the qb will have to do like punts and give a signal they are sliding. No signal, fair game.
