I bet it will be Gregory Mathien since it is a knee. He (Beeler assists) do the vast majority of knees for UT athletes, especially football. Mathien worked under Youmans for years before his retirement. He handled my ACL reconstruction. Meniscus tear recovery after surgery is 3-6 weeks subject to severity.

Ok... I'm dead serious when I say that Dooley needs to Just keep CP, hunter, rogers and rivera out of contact. I'm starting to get pissed. If anything happens to one of them, somebody better be ready to talk me off a ledge. GREEN JERSEY'S!!!!!!

I was wondering if Dooley lied about Rivera tweaking his knee just so he could keep him out of practice for a week or so and avoid possible injury because of the lack of depth at te.

Sprained my miniscus and it hurt for a year. Hyper extended doing leg lifts. I think a tear would be better than a sprain due to surgery able to help.

Sorry, sprain = tear. Minor sprain = minor tear. That's why it hurt like hell. Wait until you are about 40, that sprain will talk to you and you will have to listen.

^This.....Youman's did my 2nd surgery on my right knee and Mathien did my first on the left. Dr. Greg is awesome! Vols4us, do you think that they will try to repair his meniscus? I have read some articles that say they can actually sew it back together and it will heal over time.....a long time.

We both went to the right place. Greg is awesome and I have a story or two to tell about my time under his care. I am sure you do as well. Youmans was one of the few original masters of arthorscopic.

IMO if the tear is partial and clean he will do just that - sew it back together. Greg does the most current procedures and takes great pride in his work. Everything he promised and told me to expect happened exactly the way he described it. I could not have been more pleased with how it all turned out. He will get this right.

Almost forgot to add that it may require a second minor procedure subject to how much had to be done. That's what can extend it to 8 weeks or so. The internal stitches will be the kind that dissolve if it is minor. If is more extensive they might have to do more that will cause recovery to be extended.

I was reading and it said if surgery was needed it could take 8to12 weeks to be fully heeLed.I'm sure that each case is different.maybe it's not that bad.

That sounds like a repair. With a miniscetomy (sp), you are as healed as you are going to be from an internal standpoint. The incisions have to heal and the swelling from the surgery has to go away but that is usually pretty quick. With the shape those guys are in, a scope and trim should have him back in about 6 weeks tops. Let's just hope it's PT and only missing one game.

Like TNGlen said, recovery time depends completely on the type of surgery to fix it. Surgical procedure depends on the type of tear in the meniscus (location, depth of it, etc).

They can do a menisectomy, in which they remove the torn portion, trim everything up nice and neat, and can go back to sport in around 6 weeks usually. The down side of this surgery is the long term effects. The meniscus is the cartlidge inside the knee that gives cushion between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone). Naturally, the less cartlidge thats there, the less cushion you have, and whats left usually wears out faster over the years.

The other option is a meniscal repair, in which they sow up the torn portion of the meniscus and it has to have time to heal back together before beginning weight bearing activities. A patient with this sugery may just be starting to walk on thier own at this time, and can be up to 3 months before returning to sport. The thing is the blood supply in cartlidge is fairly poor, so it takes a long time to heal.

A smaller tear on the outer ring of the cartlidge can just heal on its own, but the person has to stop doing the activities that bother long enough to allow it to heal up.
