I love the guy, always have. Another Michigan transplant. I remember hearing about him a lot when he was in HS...Oak Park is only about 20 min from my hometown. He runs extremely hard and fearless..time for him to shine!

Funny..I was thinking earlier this year that we didn't really have anyone at the RB position to replace Hurd/Kamara because I figured them gone for the year. Man I was dead wrong after watching Kelly the times he has found game time. Impressed..not worried.

Also...kind of made those Hurd to TE jokes seem...not a bad idea..

He has well surpassed my expectations thus far.
In hindsight they weren't joking about Hurd to TE

The original Crazy Legs, Elroy Hirsch. It's time for a new one

Elroy Hirsch
American Football Player

Elroy Leon "Crazy Legs" Hirsch was an American football player and sport executive. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974. He was also named to the all-time All-Pro team selected in 1968 and to the National Football League 1950s All-Decade Team.

The Chicago Daily News's Francis Powers is credited with the nickname "Crazy Legs" in his recap of Wisconsin's 13-7 victory over Great Lakes Naval Station at Soldier Field in Chicago: "Hirsch ran like a demented duck. His crazy legs were gyrating in six different directions all at the same time during a 61-yard touchdown run that solidified the win."

So I remember back when Hurd was a freshman and watching him run. 1st contact in the back field and he would still carry guys for 4+ yards most times. He was an absolute nightmare to bring down 1v1.

Simply stated he ran with intensity.

And watching him run as a junior there simply is no intensity anymore. Not going to get into the rest of the brouhaha there's been enough said on that.

Now I see Kamara and Kelly run. You see the intensity again. It's obvious.

Is Kelly now as good as a freshman Hurd? I don't know. But that ship has sailed. To me Kelly and Kamara are indeed better than a junior Hurd from what I've seen on the field.

And I cannot think in all of my years watching UT football when the feature RB got weaker and less intense as his career progressed. That in and of itself really says a lot to me anyway.

Injury setbacks? Sure but when the hit the field again they have played like there was something to prove. Again, intensity.

He was my favorite NFL RB in those days. Hollywood even made a movie about his career. It was called, what else, "Crazylegs". I was about eight years old when I saw it at the Capitol Theater in beautiful, down-town Maryville, Tennessee.

I wish this idea could get some traction. In the past Vol Nation has tried to force nicknames on this player or that, but I think this one would stick.

I think he already has a nickname.

VFL34 has been calling him Jelly for a while.

Before Kelly began getting carries, I'd watched his HS footage. What jumped out was his patience following blocks without lingering too long. Or making something out of not much. Strong enough to break tackles and take it to the house, excellent vision.

He's going to be a diamond for the Vols.

Here's a nutty kinda thought. Is it possible that old Nationdom finally got one right? (no offense Nationdom😁). He's consistently said that John Kelly is a better running back than Hurd for awhile now. One can pretty easily make a case right now that he is.

Much props Nationdom.

Kelly is good. This team may have 99 problems, but the RB position ain't one.

Was the OL blocking harder for RBs other than Hurd? I am not hearing much love lost for his departure.

Fact that OL LIKES blocking for him shouldn't be over-looked...just as it shouldn't be over looked for a certain other RB who thought the team was all about him.
