Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Harper did that today,,,she played a top 10 team without 3 primary players
with girls who had been getting splinters, we "toe to toed" VA Tech to a 3 point game
except for a crappy opening and a 10-0 run in Q3,,,she coached her proverbial butt off!
Even I will say she did a good job today and the girls competed in the loss. Could have had her Bruce Pearl vs Kansas moment but it wasn’t meant to be. Will be remembered as another loss unfortunately

he won titles before they arrived. Lobo, Rizzotti, Bird? He knocked off us off well before those you mentioned arrived.
He is a great coach, but it seems they only win the Natty when they have a superstar. I think that's what has been missing the past few years. Shame we still haven't gotten a healthy Paige and Azzi together yet.

Good coaches get the most out of their talent and their team--whatever it's level. See, say, Muffet McGraw. Is Harper doing that? Not based on the evidence from today's game. The defensive effort was good, by and large--though we still make basic mistakes. But on offense we got virtually nothing out of a group of six/seven players who played more than 10 minutes. It's the coaches job to get production out of the supporting group, and if you have strong fundamentals and a solid offensive system, you can do that.
Horston alone kept this game close with a chance. She doesn’t go for 26, who knows how bad it would have been.

Same could be said for us, Holdsclaw, Meek era,Parker, Gordon…always need a POY type player to win it

Today, I saw a lot of improvement especially on defense against a top ten team. They never gave up and TK played well against a top post player. It is a work in progress. Not having Jackson available cost us especially on offense. We did pass up some open shots. Darby did not have a good shooting day. A lot of that was the way she was defended and her inability to make contested shots. Overall, except for losing, I am happy with the way they played. It is a work in progress.
Darby not having a good shooting day is something that has been going on all season...I don't know why she starts...then again, I don't understand a lot of things this season...😑

Well it gets down to would you start in her place. Her defense has improved. I guess you could go with Walker.

Last minute scratches will give her some credit by me on keeping it respectable. Like I said, this was her Pearl vs Kansas moment and it didn’t happen.

We don't know the timeline on the injuries, but I suspect Kellie has known for a minute that Jackson - by far the most significant scratch - would be sitting this one out...

After watching the UConn/ND game immediately after ours, I could see a discrepancy between the two games. Their game seemed so much quicker and the players definitely appeared to be in better shape. I guess the only aspect of our team I’m not disappointed in is Horston. I don’t know what is going on with RJ but I think it’s a good sign that Kelly has laid the law down and whatever has happened, she isn’t putting up with it. A lot of benchwarmers got their chances today but didn’t take advantage of the extra playing time. Marta did some good things but killed us with the ill-timed three and the missed entry pass. And it would have been so nice if either of our guards could have hit the broad side of a barn from three.

He does nothing. I also don't like the idea of a husband and wife duo. As much as we want to say how great Dawn, Geno, Tara, Kim, etc are at coaching, they also have really good assistant coaches who can either recruit or help coach in game. We need something different.

Fulmer is always doing something dumb. He probably had the Weakley's on his mind when he hired Harper. Fans need to realize Harper isn't Summitt just because she played PG for her. She's probably more like the coach at Duke after Gail Goestenkors left for Texas except she's two coaches later after the last coaching lacky shot a blow dart into the neck of the program.

Read this five times but had to quit to avoid a migraine. The brain can only stand so much.

When they hired her, my first thought was that UT women's basketball was doing exactly what Alabama football did after Bear Bryant. You couldn't get the job unless you had some connection to Bear. Kellie Harper already had one shot at the big time at NC State and basically ran them down to mediocrity. I was around Raleigh when that was happening and it wasn't pretty. Then she gets fired, wins some games at a mid-major and she played for Pat Summitt, so she gets the job at Tennessee. No way that resume gets her the Tennessee job if not for the angle.

And she will probably turn this season around and get into the NCAAs this season. Probably will keep doing that for as long as they let her, like Holly did. But as long as "she played/worked for Pat" is the main criteria and not "get the best damn coach out there no matter where they came from," Tennessee isn't going to get back where they used to be.

Oh because that will clearly fix everything! Brilliant!
Ok, then fire her. Better?
It’s horrible optics to keep running through assistants while he remains untouched. Perhaps she’ll turn it around, but she may be headed for door if she doesn’t get things figured out.

Could you imagine Horston in a well coached offense with a good compliment around her. She has to work so hard to give our team a chance to keep it close.

I can imagine it, and did all summer. And the few times its happened this season, its been magical. I mean Harper brought Horston exactly what she needed in the two major areas she needs help - a PG to handle and an even better scorer who can shoot a decent %.

Unfortunately, so far the actual on court execution of the package has mostly been disappointing. But undoubtably, Jordan H gives it her whole heart.

Oh goody, is this another one of those "fire her husband" movements? Major Pain (and Barf) will want in on this farce. Just wait a minute and he will show up to lead you because he trolls all my posts.
I have no idea who those people are. Sounds like y’all have drawn your lines in the sand and entrenched yourself. Same as football. You’re going to have people that dig their heels in on a position, not because it logically follows, but because of this keyboard warrior quarreling. If you don’t think firing her husband should be on the table, then I don’t know what to tell you. You’re entitled to that opinion, but let’s not act all indignant when the subject is staff changes.

"Majority" of a "fan base" don't only show in in specific threads only when a team is struggling or losing and then only to insult, mock, taunt, gloat when the team loses. Majority aren't hypocrites who sing the praises of other coaches when touting their superiority over our staff yet are strangely silent when those other coaches lose games. Majority don't complain about makeup or social justice protests that are unrelated to team play.
The majority of discussion is going to happen when things are going very well or very poorly. Every forum I’ve participated in has a faction of those who post regardless. They typically classify themselves as “true fans” and others as band Waggoners or trolls.
Yet, if you go to any game on campus, the overwhelming number of people don’t participate in these forums. They do buy tickets and spend money when things are good, and stay home when things are bad.

Okay, let's just consider the audience, whether through media or game attendees. I'm suggesting that there is a big difference among the "casual" fans who only show increased interest according to the latest buzz, the "fairweather fans" who only support the team when they're on top but abandon them early on when things are tough, and the "supportive fans" who stick with the team in all times. The latter doesn't mean "blindly support" regardless of how bad things get, but it certainly doesn't mean getting mean and nasty or just quitting on a team at the first sign of adversity.

It's easy to pull up members' posting history to see patterns of posting (unless they block you because they can dish it out but can't take it). When 95% of their posts are insults & digs toward the program, the coaches, and/or the players, you can determine the type of"fan" they are. When a member has nothing good to say even when the team is succeeding and even belittles those successes, the term "fan" seems overly-generous.
