Now I know this might seem like semantics to some on this board or maybe even a little trivial, but I take a lot of pride in where I live and the traditions of our southern culture. The SEC has always been a southern conference and has been an institution that showcases to the rest of the country how southerner’s live, thinks, and spend our time. We love our football and I really believe we love the way that this conference is an exclusively southern institution.

I really think that if we start letting in teams like west Virginia, Maryland, or even Missouri we will lose a certain charm to this conference that was pivotal in making it the best football conference in the nation.

I think Texas AM is a great addition and will fit in culturally and has the potential of becoming a sleeping giant with the ability to recruit Texas using the SEC brand. it also will help other sec teams open up recruiting in Texas.

I could live with VT seeing they are a quality football power and regionally they would make sense. I just don’t think they would add much..VT will not carry the DC market. In reality the University of Virginia would carry more of the dc market and I believe having the university of Virginia in a southern conference is a no brainer, the campus is beautiful, the football team is on the right track and could become a quality team given the momentum of joining the sec.

So just to sum it up, I think that keeping the SEC a traditional southern conference is in its best interest for remaining the most passionate and unique conference in the country. Also hell we didn’t get to have our own country so at least let us have our own conference HAHA

MY dream choice's would be this...and before you kill me for one or two really spend some time and think about it..I really think it makes sense and even though one or two of these teams are not powerhouses at this moment they have the potential to become quality football programs.

EAST expansion
North Carolina or North Carolina State- adding a new southern state that doesn’t have much SEC coverage, and North Carolina markets are some of the fastest growing markets in the country.

University of Virginia-a new southern state in the SEC family. How can you have a southern conference without "ooold virginia"?

WEST expansion
Texas A.M- cultural fit, good tradition

Oklahoma/Oklahoma State- quality team, great traditions, this is as far west I would go...

As far as I’m concerned West Virginia turned in their southern card when they abandoned us during the war of northern aggression…haha ;)

Might want to go look up what happened in East Tennessee during said war. Just sayin'.

So you rant about keeping this in the South and then close by saying you would take Oklahoma?

I wonder if the SEC can pull a school out of the state of NC. It only makes sense to try hard to do so.

i really think we need to add texas, north carolina, and virginia to the sec. the only reason i added oklahoma is because we need 2 teams from the west and 2 from the east. i would much rather take oklahoma than mizzou.

I just hope the other 11 schools don't vote us out now to get back at us.

Well I hear the Big 12-3 is looking for some teams nowadays. Maybe they would have mercy on us and take our yankee team.

I quit reading when you said UVa would bring more of DC than Tech would.

well then that means you dont know what your talking about. read the feedback about virginia media writers. they all agree that the dc market ignores VT. VT is closer to knoxville than it is DC.. they cover maryland more than they do VT

Hey bro, I don't know about you, but I live in Virginia around those media writers (and I know many, many people from NoVa! what do you know!) and can confirm that you know jack-sh*t.

Nobody cares about UVa football. At all. Most in DC don't care about Maryland football. Northern Virginia/DC is Hokie territory.

You can still be proud of where you live and your culture regardless of who is in a College Football Conference, something that has zero affect on your life.

This. Also, Kentucky.

I think the OP makes quite a few good points, actually and I enjoyed the spirit of the post. But I'm not sure revenge for the Civil War is important to a majority of SEC fans these days.

Won't delve into the analysis of why, but will say I agree with the spirit of the OP in keeping the conference 'southern." There is a big difference below the Mason Dixon line with how people approach life and football.

yeah yeah yeah but they went along with the rest of the state haha

No we didn't. East Tennessee was invaded by rebels before the second vote on secession took place and we were immediately occupied by the confederacy as a hostile territory. Men from East Tennessee walked miles and risked slaughter at checkpoints to join the Union Army. Outside of Chatt, the vast majority of E. TN remained Union even while occupied by the rebels. We were one of the least divided areas in the country as dam near everyone supported the Union.

Knoxville threw a party when they were liberated by Union troops and shocked the crap out of the Union officers who couldn't believe we were being so generous despite having nothing due to the war. We wanted Lincoln to arm us after we were liberated.

Yeah I think he missed several historical items there if that's what's important.

Like.... Lincoln sending federal troops to surround the Md captitol to prevent a secession vote that he was going to lose... or that Missouri was a border state with more confederates than unionists similar to Ky. Remember the James gang garnered alot of support from Confederate sympathizers across Missouri. They operated out of a town in NW Missouri.

FWIW, it is likely that Missouri and WV are more in line culturally with the rest of the SEC than FL is.
