Keep Pearl around!

If they really cared it isn't that hard to turn a radio dial.

That's kinda the point, relevance is about sustaining a long term tradition that makes people want to listen. It's not like people wanted to tune in to hear that we were losing another B-Ball game. People were also trained in the fact we had two REALLY good teams to listen/watch, the Men's football team and the Women's b-ball team.

Take a look at Florida basketball. They didn't have much success until those two titles. During the four/five years preceding those titles, Florida didn't get to the sweet 16. Attendance was probably around 8,000. During their title runs, attendance was probably close to 11,00. And since those two titles, attendance has probably averaged around 8,000 again. Heck, they only got 4,700 in the O'dome for the first round of the NIT.

So yes, you can be a bandwagon fan with a poor program history.

Once again we see how having long term relevance translates into success and viewership. Noticed what happened to a 17 year tenured coach that start losing fans?? He has those fans from the start, Bruce is basically starting with a small following that just loves UT Sports.

No, Pearl's got to go. Four straight years of not going to the Elite Eight? Are you kidding me? He's a mediocre D3 coach at best.
You guys have got to be kidding. We have never been to the elite eight, and Pearl has done more for this team than any coach in the past years. Also you call this a poor season, with new players we have, and we did make it to the tournament. I think he has done a good job. I just hate it when teams do well ,but then one year it may fall off a bit and everyone starts talking about firing the coach. I think those people are what you call ( Not a True Fan.) I would like to see the people talking this crap go and coach the team and see how they do then. Coaching has alot to do on how you motivate a team or player. I think Pearl does that very well. You can be one of the smartest coaches, but if the players do not care for you, they wont win for you.

Someone's sarcasm detector is broken.

One poor season does not a bad coach make. He was up front at the beginning of the season that his expectations for this year were lower than his previous teams, so why all the naysayers? I supposed we should also be dissing Summitt as well for her lowest NCAA seed ever.

Give Pearl a few more years. This quick turnaround coaching world is pathetic.

Compared to last season, the Vols were down a bit. However, I would not use the word "poor." Especially when comparing to the Buzz Peterson/Kevin O'Neill/Wade Houston teams. 4 straight NCAA tournaments is a big accomplishment for a program thats been up and down for the past 20 years. I think the preseason expectations were based on the thinking that Hopson was going to have an awesome "one-and-done" freshman season. It didn't happen. That coupled with the fact that the Vols don't have a pure point guard made this season into a very difficult one. West will be eligible next season, and I fully expect Pearl to recruit another point guard. If Pearl stays, the program is moving in the right direction.

Pearl has a young team and has a lot of new talent coming in. They'll be a lot better next year, and could make a deep tourny run. UT should easily dominate the SEC next year. UK and UF will still be down, and LSU is losing a lot of talent.

I agree with everything you said. :) It is frustrating that we lost in the first round, but at least we were there and not sitting at home like most of the rest of the Conference.

All you teenie poppers need to STFU on Pearl and his coaching ability. It is stupid for young people to think they have everything figured out ( which you do all too often ) when the reality is you don't know jack. As you get older you will reflect back on your earlier years and see how foolish you really was.

The past 3 years prior to this year you so called "fans" were all hyped up because of the success of the program. This season did not turn out the same as the previous 3 and now you're saying the guy has lost it? Who is the imbecile using this analogy?

The FB program tanked and by mid season fans were looking forward to the BB season to have reason to cheer. The Lady Vols have struggled with youth and losing CP but they made it to the dance. I don't see anyone asking for a new coach for Pat why? Perhaps people realize she will turn it around next season given her past resume. The men did not have the season we wanted but they still won 20 games let me repeat that, they still won 20 games and tied for SEC East crown.

I challenge all the Pearl haters to go back the past 30 years and find a 4 year run where our BB team has won more games and accomplished more in post season play. To want to get rid of Pearl is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Pearl would not last 48 hrs before he would be hired by a university. Georgia would take Pearl in a NY minute and then you would be crying the blues for your irrational behavior towards the best coach we have had. I remember Ray Mears teams and he is written down in the chronicles of UT legend but to watch his teams play then was a cure for insomnia. The 4 corner offense and games under 20 pts at the half was like jabbing needles into your eyes to keep from watching.

Last I checked we are not KY,Duke,Carolina,Kansas,Georgetown,Villanova,or UCLA which are well known for BB programs. We are known as a FB school, but since Pearl has come we are known as a FB school that plays great BB too. Would I love to see us become both..absolutely. Given the current economy, the salaries of coaches and the money it would take to get someone else that some see could do better is not going to happen. I will take Pearl and his 98 wins in 4 years anytime, anyday.

Say 4-5 years a from now, the Vols are still making the NCAA ever year but they've still not made it past a Sweet 16. Let's say they make 1 Sweet 16 in the next 5 years, and win the SECE a few times. That would be almost 10 years he's been here, and on the plus side we will have made the NCAA almost 10 straight years, but on the negative side we still have little NCAAT success to show for it.

The question I have is, at that point how do you judge Pearl? Do you appluad that he's taken UT to the Dance for about a decade straight, which is great for a place like UT. Or do you start to think that this is as good as it's going to get under Pearl and is that ok with the majority of Vol fans?

I'm not saying forever, but I don't see why it shouldn't be for the near future.

Who says he is John Wooden? I just think Tennessee Basketball has been pretty irrelevant in my lifetime and I'm happy with what our program has accomplished under Pearl.

They haven't run out of hot dogs ONE time since Pearl took over is what he's trying to say.

:birgits_giggle:

I would think that the players share in that deficiency as well. We have a bunch of street ballers and no floor general to keep them under control. Man we miss JuJuan and Chris right now. I do think though, that losing Prince will do nothing but help us as a team going into next year.
Prince is just a junior.

I'm no teenie bopper yet I still don't believe we're going to win anything of note unless what we expect of our players changes.

This is the kind of crap that causes a backlash the other way. The gameplan against Oklahoma State was a disaster -- a complete, ridiculous, and stupid failure -- and yet if anybody criticizes it, they're shouted down by the sycophants who think he's Jesus the Coach. Apparently Pearl is even better at selling himself than he is his basketball program.

Oh, and we're already paying Pearl about as much as the very top college coaches in the country. Which is why he should be expected to perform like one now.

Exactly. I'm getting sick of every valid criticism met with some stupid post about how this isn't Buzz/Wade/etc. and then lists everything he's accomplished, then calls anyone who wants him gone an idiot.

For one, enough with the strawmen arguments. Criticizing a lousy gameplan and bad excection doesn't NOT equal "I want Pearl gone". How about discussing the criticisms and addressing them instead of your blind orange colored bullcrap? If you disagree with the criticisms, then say why. And telling us how much better UT basketball is now is NOT addressing the criticisms.

Geez, it IS quickly turning into the Fulmer situation in a lot of ways.

Uh. Simple. They hopped on the bandwagon when UT started winning.

At least when one pulls for Duke or Carolina, you can expect to watch a well-coached and disciplined team. When I attended Tennessee in the mid to late eighties, I did not care about UT hoops. I didn't begin to appreciate basketball until I moved to within an hour of Tobacco Road years later. It's nothing about being bandwagon because my blood is no less orange than anyone else's. I can appreciate something done well and done right, that's all.

Thank you dickens, we may not see eye to eye very often, but you have just made it much easier to feed my growing ignore list.
