Kamara, Reeves-Maybin join UT diversity protest

Let me break down the situation: When you grow up, get a job, and start paying taxes; then you can decide how you'd like your tax money to be spent. If you can get your fellow students or political think alikes to ante up $5M annually for something this inane, go for it. Personally I'd rather the money go to something productive like safe, reliable food supply over another form of revisionism from juvenile wannabe academics.

I work. I'm a grown a$$ man with kids. I approve of my tax dollars going to a department that actively promotes diversity among my alma mater's student population. The amount of leaps in logic that you take with your defense tells me that perhaps attending the institution you so adamantly slam might be to your benefit. Take your head out of the Tennessean, research what the department actually does for yourself, and then formulate your own opinion instead of simply regurgitating the poiticical BS that is being fed to you in order to garner more political support.

lol, How is it inane? Even the school administration spoke with the legislature to show why the program is needed. I think you're the type of person that only cares about himself and the hell with everyone else. Which is pretty sad and pathetic. I'm sure you keep track of all of your tax dollars and tell them how to spend it. Your frame of thinking is the reason why a diversity program is needed. But I'm sure you hate more federal programs that give give give your tax dollars away.

I hate them more than anything.:realmad:

You hate medicaid? Social Security? Medicare? I love these programs. They helped supported my grandparents after they had retired and took a real burden off my family.

If all the money for Social Security that was taken out of your check over your life went straight into a savings account for you instead of into the government then you would end up better off with more money, even if that money didn't earn any interest while it was in that account because nothing would have to be taken out for the costs (i.e. beuracrats that run the program's salary and generous retirement benefits) of running the program.

The concept is really simple when you think about it instead of "feeling" about it. Its your money dummy.

Let me tell you about medicaid. If your grandparents had any real estate that was paid for, and they had to use medicaid for any length of time, then the government would force the sale of said real estate to pay them back after they passed. There are ways around this legally but I doubt someone that holds the belief's that you espouse would ever "feel" the need to look into it.

JRM and Kamara have a right to their opinion. Everyone else on this thread have a right to their opinion.

Can everyone just agree to disagree and move this to the political forum?

Yes and no. I don't hate it for retirement age people or people with a true disability but I do hate it for the majority of worthless people on it that are stealing it. If your parents were not of retirement age and could have been working for an income then they were stealing from the people who actually do work. Tons of people on both of these programs that should be working and completely cut off. I would much rather fund my own retirement and insurance and not contribute to these programs. I have family members who took advantage of SS until turned in.

Here is a novel idea.. How about people save for the retirement.. They have the entire working life to do so.. Social Security should not be the primary or only means in retirement. I would hate to think after working for 40 years you hang it up with nothing but a government check to survive

Regardless of whether the Diversity office is useful or not, I think that the legislature is making a huge mistake. Look at what happened to Missouri, we do not want to bring that kind of exposure to the University. These protest could really snowball. It could end up costing the University more money in the long run. Missouri has a 32 million dollar deficit.
Secondly, it could harm athletic recruiting if prospects got the idea that the university was not committed to diversity. Tennessee is much whiter relative to most of our competitors. This will be used against us.

You're right, the working poor's problem is that they just don't use all that disposable income wisely.

Oh, wait. I forgot. They're not called working poor because it rhymes.

Now that is a statement from a person who has bought 100% into the PC culture!

What happened at Missouri was a bunch of left wing lunatics promoting socialism! With regards to "diversity" I am getting fed up with this code word being used for discrimination against the majority. Why don't colleges focus more on actually teaching youth and equipping them with the tools to focus on becoming successful in our society and quit focusing on issues that divide us as a nation.

The University of Tennessee is an educational institution that has an athletics department. It is not a NFL franchise.

You are wrong.. You mean over 480 working months in a average career.. Can't save anything and become completely dependent of the SS to live...

As government becomes increasingly wasteful with tax dollars, taxpayers become more concerned where the money is spent. I guess this can be considered self centered.

American citizens, that actually work for a living and pay taxes, who want our tax dollars going to teaching our students skills that will make them a productive member of society. Not wasted on crap that creates divisions in this nation!

Glad to enlighten your PC mind!

P.S. I'm laughing harder! :eek:lol:

:hi:

What I find amazing, is the number of "fan boys"! Tax money should be accounted for, every cent. This office's budget, the complete budget-should be public info. Those that argue, "We need to keep the millions of tax dollars flowing into this office, because it is needed", but can't supply HOW the money is spent, are idiots. Every single expense should be accounted for, then and only then can an Informed decision regarding the expenditure be made. Having a spare tire in your car-good idea-if that spare tire costs $3,400.00-NOT a good idea, in fact, there is very likely a big problem. (And please, one of the "We've got to have it at any cost" idiots, please don't bring us some strange, car when the tires and wheel are way above normal costs. We have a few brain dead types that would do this). If, UT is paying for the car in the example (some from UT funds, some from the state, some from outer-space), but doesn't have a break down on the costs of operating the car, they'd never know how much they just got ripped-off for the tire.
