Kamara, Reeves-Maybin join UT diversity protest

If it was such a major budgetary concern, why only pull funding for UTK's diversity office and not for those at other universities in the state? I mean, if diversity offices were such a huge financial burden on the state's coffers, wouldn't it make sense to cut funding for all of them and not just at one place?

bc ours is the one putting out embarrassing nonsense.

I'm going to take the high road. Diversity is not bad when people agree to live together and love one another. Forcing TN residents to spend 5 million dollars per year without their consent to publicly SHAME every student and parent into potentially violating their morals and faith because of some activist movement is not a price I am willing to pay. These kids have never had to earn a living and support anything except for their own chosen lifestyle, let alone a family that depends on you.

These kids work extremely hard to battle it out on Saturdays but they haven't a clue about what it takes to support a family by themselves yet. They don't realize that there are lots of things that you can do to help your own family with the money that the government is stealing from you to promote this nonsense. They don't get a paycheck yet. They don't file taxes and have money taken from them without their permission by the government. I can only hope that Kamara and Reeves-Maybin one day learn that freedom isn't free and neither is anything else in life except for salvation.

So because they do not have a family they are not entitled to an opinion? What a bunch of crap.

I got news for you guy, kids today are far more liberal and accepting than the older generations. When I was growing up, everyone had suspicions about who was gay but openly gay kids were far and few between. The ridicule from classmates would have been relentless. Now the bigger issue for these kids isn't coming out to schoolmates but coming out to parents. The world is changing and is becoming more accepting and less stuck in inflexible beliefs that have no rationale basis.

The problem with offices of diversity is that they push policies that drive people apart instead of trying to bring people together which should be it's purpose.

Wonder how they'd feel if 102,455 people got up and walked out at of neyland stadium at the start of the 3rd quarter of the Florida game?

WTF?? Because they are standing up for sonethibg they believe in? BTW it doesn't matter if it affects them directly for those of you saying that crap. Plenty of white people stood with MLK and rallied for civil rights. I have no opinion on the actual issue but the fact that someone would take their valuable time to stand and protest sonething unrelated to them is in fact a sign that the cause matters to some.

Boycott a 4th Quarter all you want...it's your right but I would hope your cause is much bigger than your petty beef with students advocating their First Amendment Rights.

UT simply adopted/copied suggestions from other well-known institutions. There are plenty of things I learned at UT that I haven't adopted. Your question is irrelevant

Question is relevant. The reason you haven't adopted the pronouns is the same reason 100% of the other people haven't adopted the pronouns. Because it's stupid to make up new words and suggest people use them. Makes UT look stupid. Name these "well known institutions".

Wow. Is this a parody post? You all have no idea what you're talking about. You're in the dark on what the diversity office does. Do you really think they go around beating up religious people on campus? Shaming them into acquiescing to their demands? It's a tiny office with a handful of overworked and underpaid staff, who simply post suggestions for how people who are interested in not being a**holes can treat minorities on campus with a modicum of decency.

All I know is that I know a fairly recent 2009 Mizzou graduate, and he says that he thinks that the administration put pressure on Pinkel to leave after the protest. I know that Pinkel has non Hodgkins Lymphoma. He coached all season after his diagnosis. It is just a possibility.

It's more than a possibility. Anyone who thinks Pinkel's departure from coaching was unrelated to that protest circus has his (or her) head in the sand. The tail wagged the dog up there, and there were many key donors and fans disappointed in Pinkel's gutless decision to "support" those idiot players.

Now, I don't believe the situation at UT is nearly as dire as it was at Missouri. But if this were to linger on and involve players missing practice or games, Butch will have to take control of those players. There is a reason the funding cuts were proposed in the first place. Taxpayers are tired of their money being used to finance stupidity.

Our country is going to @#$%.

Amen! Everybody needs to gtf over themselves and stop believing they should win a $10 million cookie because somebody hurt their poor little feelings. Now, I totally agree that we have a right to do whatever we want within the bounds of the law, but thanks to the media agenda (leftist, rightist, all of them) to make big money on needless stories everybody deserves something if a word, color, or public farting offends them. It's disgusting. I attribute it to participation trophies and trickle down economics.

It's not relevant unless everything you've learned is either completely useless or completely adopted. I highly doubt that's the case

When this first happened I actually looked up to see if UT was alone. Maybe you should do the same if you're truly interested in discussing the topic

We obviously aren't on the same page.

is a total waste of tax payer money and is a burden on students.
In the long run, this office and some of its policies will do more harm than good.
I think it is reasonable that all want minorities to be treated fairly.
Betting that all most all minority students are happy at UT. (Some will never be happy anywhere).

I vote to de fund the Office of Diversity at UT.
Use the money elsewhere or lower tuition cost.

There is now a negative connotation linked to the word diversity itself, and I think that is where many people find a problem with the idea of an office designed specifically for that.

A lot of special interest groups have hijacked the idea of diversity to mold it into something that isn't inclusive and good, but something that is forced.

Diversity is a great thing when it happens naturally.

That being said, this thread is a train wreck.

I think they feel the money is not being used for good purposes.

No they want you to complain about this small sum and believe they are doing something while they continue to waste other huge amounts of money. The dollar figure is completely irrelevant

The interesting thing about many of these "protests" is that their purpose is to disrupt other events (i.e. interrupting speakers at an event). That's such a double standard. Don't ask me to respect you when you don't respect anyone else. Don't say you want to be treated equally, then ask for special treatment. We are either equal, and should be treated as such, or we aren't. You can't have it both ways.

They apparently feel the other money is being put to good use. I do agree that the govt needs to get it's house in order but can also see how the diversity program is being viewed as a waste of money currently.

I didn't really get the Black Power fist that they kept displaying. I couldn't make out some of their signs. I got #utdiversitymatters but not the others. Might have been TN House/Senate bill numbers. I also missed them walking out... I looked over at some point and they were gone. Then some regular students went through the trash they left behind and made up their own combinations of letters and numbers. One might have been "69 matters".

The protestors were respectful though. It was pretty good that they chanted whenever Mississippi was shooting free throws. They didn't crap on the National Anthem or player intros or interfere with the game.

Butch said that he fully supports his student-athletes that participated.

There can be no doubt that yes, #69 does indeed matter.

Only biased people have a problem with or negative connotations to diversity.
