Kamara, Reeves-Maybin join UT diversity protest

Eliminating something from the States budget, is not a Budget Cut???? That's news!

Cutting the budget item was a punitive measure and not a part of sound fiscal policy. That's the point you can't seem to grasp of just willfully ignore . It was done out of spite

To be fair, no one has a freaking clue what you're babbling about anymore. I'm beginning to think you've even confused yourself

No confusion here, this string was started about a protest over BUDGET AND THE CUTTING OF THE BUDGET. I've stayed on subject, your babbling about this and that, acting confused over what a budget is, and what is a budget cut, etc. if real, you are confused, and need help. If it's an act- you need help.

Give me a break. Diversity offices, such as the one in question, serve underrepresented groups. Which would imply that there is no equity among groups, races, etc. White men still have it made, regardless of what they tell you ( white male here). The gender neutral pronoun and Christmas party stuff is extremely stupid (conservative Christian here), but there's a legitimate need for diversity in our world, especially at a place like UT that's supposed to represent an enlighten segment of society.

OK, dumb question. Who is underrepresented at a university and how/why are they underrepresented?

I can easily grasp that concept. Oh, BTW, I'm glad you've dropped the "stupid act" for just on second, and got back on the subject of Budget. The assertion that this budget cutting measure is nothing more than a punitive measure, is not a fact. Without knowing what we are getting for $5,000,000.00/year, it may very well turn out to be a sound financial decision. I've yet to see any figures as to things such as salaries, and costs. Without that info, you're pulling "Punitive measure" out of thin air.

What are the salaries, office costs, retirement programs, how many employees, etc.???? Do you know these answers, or are you just spouting off with a knee jerk reaction? I believe we are talking budget cuts.

Your post prior to this one and the one's later make me think that you might not know what this is about. What does it matter the cost of salaries, office costs, retirement programs, etc? Unfortunately, the department is needed in this country. The legislatures are talking about shutting down this needed department. If they were talking about budget cuts, they could look among themselves to see where their salaries could be cut in order to make a positive impact on the budget.

It was proposed by someone too lazy/dumb to even figure out how the dept is funded! It had zero to do with money.

It's not shocking at all that you share ideas with them

I just think their timing is way wrong. Kinda like me asking for the car on a school night right after a below acceptable report card came in. I knew better

While JRM and Kamara have done well and are good leaders, actions of the football program have resulted in a major Title IX lawsuit within the last two weeks that will likely cost the University more than the $5 million Diversity program cost even if they win. There was a protest against sexual assaults after Harts presser. Where they interested in that?

I just think they need to get their house in order before they look for other battles to fight. Let the protesters take it. Jmo

It's amazing how a thread turns into this.
2 players attending a peaceful protest on a department that most admitted to knowing little about - other than a couple of negative headlines.
The guys did nothing wrong. They will suffer no punishment as a couple even suggested.
Seems the ones complaining are mostly just mad because others have different views.

Well, given they haven't broken any rules in any way shape or form, all I can offer you for all of your b**ching and complaining is.. a tissue. :)

I was at the game . They occupied the student cheering section and did different chants during the game. Then with ten minutes to go in the game they walked out leaving the student section empty. I thought it was an insult to our bb team and the seniors on senior day. That wasn't the place for a protrst.

Was spite the motive for the "diversity" office's call to ban CHRISTmas parties? Maybe a call to be discriminatory against CHRISTians? Seems a little biased in it's diversity mission don't you think?

Maybe our legislatures making a statement that all the PC MUST STOP WASTING MY TAX DOLLARS? Looks like good fiscal policy to me!

Pretty sure none of that happened (including the last part about how they stop wasting tax dollars)

Wait, you're one of those who believe a war on Christmas really exists aren't you?

Only if you're looking for a reason to continue funding the dept. I somehow don't think that's what you want

This is a prime example of a liberal (I hope "liberal" does not offend you in a PC sort of way). Liberals think they can look in people's minds and tell what their "true" motive is or what they want. Sorry to break the news to you but you got what I was thinking completely wrong!

It was effective, which resulted in this thread. I think it served its purpose.

You just made my point in a "liberal" sort of way! Debating you is not even a challenge! I bet you feel the "Bern." Am I right?

Except you haven't debated anything and have brought nothing to the discussion. All you've done is make claims that aren't really true and call me names you believe to be insults. It's doubtful you even realize what that moniker means anyway

Your statement is a little unsettling. When you say, "Sexual tendencies", I hope you don't mean meeting and trying to arrange sex with 14 year olds? Or other types of pedophile activity-these are crimes, as they should be. Regarding open ideas, some may argue that if the vast majority of a school's tenured professors belonged to the socialist party, or the Nazi party, or the democrat party, etc. that the state was not providing a open environment-while it wouldn't be a school affiliated with a given religion, it would be one affiliated ( numerically) with a given political party. I'm sure you're 100% opposed to that also. While many parents do not want their children "Sheltered" they also do not want their values, and religion belittled. It's a fine line, when you set yourself up as what is sheltering and what is Ok.

1. I think it was obvious that by "sexual tendencies," I meant what consenting adults do in private (regardless of sexual orientation). Maybe I shouldn't have assumed everyone would have the reading comprehension to pick up on that or the common sense not to lump in all gays and transsexuals with pedophiles. My apologies.

2. I have no idea what you're going for with that hypothetical. I'm not sure what Nazis and Socialists have to do with a state-run institution not using religion as a justifying factor to fund or defund a department on campus.

If it was such a major budgetary concern, why only pull funding for UTK's diversity office and not for those at other universities in the state? I mean, if diversity offices were such a huge financial burden on the state's coffers, wouldn't it make sense to cut funding for all of them and not just at one place?

All I know is that I know a fairly recent 2009 Mizzou graduate, and he says that he thinks that the administration put pressure on Pinkel to leave after the protest. I know that Pinkel has non Hodgkins Lymphoma. He coached all season after his diagnosis. It is just a possibility.

So graduating from Mizzou 6 years ago means he knows the inner workings of their AD? And they used the protestss to push out the best coach in their school's history less than a year removed from back to back tris to Atlanta? All this one week after the protest? C'mon man.

Even if your friends tin-foil theory is true, it didn't change the fact that these are competent different situations.

I know no one really is happy with the Tennessean so if you dont want to go to to the link i will provide the text:

Kamara, Reeves-Maybin join UT diversity protest

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee students gathered at the school's men's basketball game Saturday, holding signs in protest of a panel of state lawmakers' movement to take state funding away from the school's diversity office.

Among them were current Tennessee football stars Alvin Kamara and Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

I'm sure that this support isn't in response to holiday parties and gender neutral pronouns but more because the office gave the racial minorities of UT a platform to be heard.

Would a diverse sexual preference for farm animals qualify for special protections?
We need our diversity office to answer these important questions.

Good grief. Shut it down.

I'm going to take the high road. Diversity is not bad when people agree to live together and love one another. Forcing TN residents to spend 5 million dollars per year without their consent to publicly SHAME every student and parent into potentially violating their morals and faith because of some activist movement is not a price I am willing to pay. These kids have never had to earn a living and support anything except for their own chosen lifestyle, let alone a family that depends on you.

These kids work extremely hard to battle it out on Saturdays but they haven't a clue about what it takes to support a family by themselves yet. They don't realize that there are lots of things that you can do to help your own family with the money that the government is stealing from you to promote this nonsense. They don't get a paycheck yet. They don't file taxes and have money taken from them without their permission by the government. I can only hope that Kamara and Reeves-Maybin one day learn that freedom isn't free and neither is anything else in life except for salvation.

From a purely business perspective, diversity is a competitive advantage for large organizations and public institutions. It makes for a well rounded education and attracts top talent (teachers and students) to the university.

I worked as a peer counselor for a diversity initiative called BETS while at UT, and first hand, I can say that those in the diversity program do a lot of good for school and community. Our program focussed on rising senior high-school students (highly talented students from multiple backgrounds) , and exposed them to the business school at UT. Many of these students chose UT and went on to be very successful there and beyond.

The director of this program is a good friend of mine, and he is a VFL to the core (travels to every bowl game, attends multiple sports, bleeds orange, etc.). This is not Missouri 2.0. Nobody is blowing anything out of proportion. A number of people's career and livelihood (not to mention the strength of our university) is a cause worth fighting for.
