He will ensure he gets in the game, and in the post game he will talk about how much those players mean to the program because they push the others to be better. He will highlight their importance to the team not because he feels like he has to, but because he believes it. That’s a huge difference, regardless of how you badly you want to spin it.

It's disastrous that a player that has never started a game expected to start a game against a top 5 opponent? The seniors didn't start last year, either. I'd have to look it up, but I don't recall all of the seniors starting the last couple of years under Harper, either.

Totally agree. This is the highest level of women’s college basketball against a top 5 team where we’ve lost 5 straight. Demanding, much less expecting, a player to start just because she’s a senior is absolutely ridiculous.

Like I said, all of the seniors didn't start last year. Pretty sure Tess went through senior day two years ago and still didn't start under Kellie.

If prioritizing winning games over sentimentality makes me a jerk, then I'll wear that title. But play the players that earn it. I'd bet any amount of money that Barnes doesn't start or give Grant Hurst more than 20 seconds against Vandy this Saturday. Are we going to throw him under the bus for that?

I'm sure you all know because you watch closely, CKC has never in two years chosen a starting lineup because it gives her the best chance to win. She's said over and over it's not the best players, it's not the best combo. Its a reward for previous performance, good practices,good attitude, good hustle etc. It's freedom her system gives her because she's going to sub them out Immediately anyway, She's given honorary starts many times. So it's tailor made to honor an Injured five year senior who for the love of God only wants to run through those blooming fireworks one tme. But you can't even manage that?

Also if her confidence in getting a win was so thin she was afraid 90 seconds was going to make the difference, that speaks volumes. And spoiler alert she **** lost anyway.

It's bogus to compare to last year. Tess and Sara started many games so had many firework opportunities. Also even though they didn't start on senior day they were guaranteed to play. So this situation is much different.

And for the love of God, do some of you need the roof to cave all the way in on your head? , Not keeping Barker and Talaysia Cooper aboard the bus is one thing. But Kaiya Wynn?

CKC very well may pull this ox out of the ditch in the tournaments or next year and I truly hope she does. But those refusing to see this season so far as an unmitigated disaster That won't stop giving just floor me.

Exactly. In my experience, all most people want to know is what is happening and why it is happening. Maybe you could've explained you're not starting her because it wouldn't be fair to deviate from your formula, but you have a conversation about it before she goes to social media with hurt feelings.

All do Respect to KW. She knows how starters are determined. & if she couldn’t win the start in practice either then why should she start just because she’s a senior? I do wish she could have gotten in the game but I also understand the coaches have to put their best on the court & in a close conf game while you’re on a losing streak it’s gonna be hard to appease a player that doesn’t get regular mins in that situation. Tess Darby, two years ago. Wasn’t planning on a 5th year, went through senior day and didn’t start.

I don’t have time to sort through all the Box scores from every senior day, but perhaps I will tonight. But I’m certain it happened before that year as well. Pat had the luxury of starting whoever she wanted because players that stayed four years were typically starters anyway, but her teams were so much better than everyone else that you could give up a player for a minute or two. Caldwell was trying to win a game against the top five opponent.

You quoted me, so I must note that I don't disagree with any of that, especially the bold part. I said when I saw cracks in December that I was going to withhold criticism until February. Well, February has come and gone -- my verdict: "mene mene tekel upharsin"

Again, I know you know this. Caldwell has de emphasized the relationship between who starts, who's the best player and who gives the best chance to win the game constantly since she's been here. Has said countless times it's used more as a reward system.

I don’t follow lady Vols at all, so flame away. Saw the post on social media and came here looking for answers, but just the normal bickering about crappy coaching. Then I did a little research and I guess just don’t get the concept of starting your worst player because they’re a senior. I understand she’s a transfer, but what about Jersey Wolfenbarger? Appears to me she didn’t start or play either. However, Looking at the box score, coach could’ve cleared the bench earlier just under 2min and still down by 9.

Anyway, seems silly and a bit selfish to leave at this point after playing 52 out of 1120min of basketball and scoring 5 total pts. 2/5 from the field and 1/8 free throws. At least now even non-fans know who she is.

So subbing her out at the beginning of the game wasn’t going to hurt and the freshman player who started probably wouldn’t have cared checking in 30seconds to a minute later. Quick question and first I apologize cause my memory ain't what it used to be.

But I don't recall Tess quitting the team after senior day and posting that her not starting was "the breaking point for her." Now, maybe I just missed Tess making such a post and such "breaking point" posts have become a perfectly standard feature of senior nights, like flowers and photos with parents.

However, if not, then I would suggest that her and Kaiya's situations are quite different.

Yes in this case the stats are five years of her life, hundreds of practices, long months of arduous rehab. and two times buying into a new coach. That deserves the honorary start if it means that much to that player. And it's total BS that those 90 seconds would have affected the game in any possible way.
