Justin Wilcox now available. Possible DC?

If we let go of Banks, I say that White should give Wilcox a call. He did a great job as DC. But he left because he hated working under Dooley, and I can't blame him for that. We still had good players on defense after he left, but Sunseri f****d it up by trying to change it from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Of all people Doolittle could have brought in as DC, it had to be Sal Sunseri.

But, if Banks was to be let go, by all means, Danny, talk with Josh and pick up that phone and see if he'd return to Knoxville.

Heupel will be making the DC hire if there is an opening. Not Danny White.

Agreed. We could probably lose to Vandy by five or six touchdowns and Heup still isn’t firing Banks. Redmond and Farooq have played pretty well, but I’ve still watched those guys try and shoulder bump tackle and absolutely whiff too many times this year. There have been others, too. How that doesn’t get corrected by this defensive staff is beyond me. Farooq whiffed badly trying to do that the other night. Some of these dudes are scared of contact. Has to get fixed.
I heard it from a VFL on the radio that CRG is the only one on the defensive side of the ball that coaches to wrap up.The other coaches may go to a player after the fact but it’s not practiced.

I would believe that. Explains the difference in that area and better play by the DL vs LBs and DBs.

Unless Vandy embarrasses UT, and most likely even then, Banks isn't going anywhere unless it's his idea.

Josh...bless his heart...remembers what it feels like to get fired. He just won't make the hard call.

So it's Banks until it ain't. Same with Willie. Same with the S&C coach. Same with Gilbert.

4 reasons UT won't compete for the NC next year. Offense will ball out. Defense, conditioning, and FG kicking will cost the Vols at least 2 games. It is what it is.

I don't bookmark, search, or go back 1000 posts to remind someone of "how that didn't age well". My event horizon, in reverse, is about a week. But for those of you who are good at it, bookmark this one. I'm pretty comfortable with it.

Go Vols. Beat Vandy, and finish 9-3. I was at 9-3 at the beginning, and at 7-5 a couple of weeks ago, so you've already proved me wrong. Now prove me right. Win out; win the bowl game; land those 4 and 5-star recruits; and hit the ground running in '26. Prove me wrong again next year...please.

So I go back and forth on that. Obviously the main thing that looks like none of it mattered was the recruiting / eligibility issues that occurred under Dooley with Bray. I think he was in over his head (as evidenced of ripping up the scheme to go with a complete 180 in Sunseri), but I also think for a putz, he had a quality staff that was led by Chaney and Wilcox.

Part of Coach O's success wasn't about scheming / gameplanning. It was being a manager surrounded with great coordinators.

Not comparing Dooley to Coach O, but Dooley did have very good coordinators his first 2 seasons.
Yeah who knows really what would have happened. I just remember hearing he was really messing up recruiting ties in certain cities and then his complete negligence of Oline recruiting. Feel like those two things in the long run cause a lot of problems as we saw in the immediate years after.

2012 will always be one of the biggest what if seasons that had a lot of implications on what followed. This year is another big what if season if we don’t blow two games and our CBs don’t get hurt. Can you imagine how our secondary would have looked with Hood, Gibson and McCoy. It might have been the best CB unit in the country. I guess we’ll see how this season impacts future ones. I feel like recruits should see that we’re so close to being a dominant force and just need the right pieces on the back 7 of the defense…also some better play calls on that side haha 😬

I think we all remember Wilcox in a favorable light because he followed what was likely the worst DC to ever walk the sideline at UT in Sal Sunseri.
I do think a lot of the issues with Wilcox at Cal is the fact that Cal has no interest in investing in NIL it seems.

Looking at some of the guys that committed to Cal and then either transferred or flipped, there were some pretty good players.
I do recall he did a decent job of recruiting here when he was DC too.

That said, he hasn't been strictly a DC in a few years, so not sure if he would fit or if he would be an upgrade over what we have now.
I think I'm with most others - IF we are looking after this season, he's worth an interview at least.

He didn’t follow Sunseri. Other way around.

If he looks White in the eye and tells him that he can’t fire anyone because Stoops destroyed his psyche 10 years ago then i hope he resigns that afternoon. This is a serious business and we deserve a coach who makes every effort to win.

Yeah, I don’t bookmark and go back on people later either. You’re Probably not far off. I’ll take a win any way we can get it Saturday and be fairly happy with 9-3.

Nostalgic food never tastes as good as we remember. Same case with Wilcox. He was a stable coach and after the Sunseri debacle, CJW gets a lot more credit than he deserves. He was a good coach but that is all. He was not great and his team just got destroyed by a bad Stanford team. Our defense drives me crazy at times, but I hate to imagine us ever giving 34 points (I think there may have been a defensive score but still) to a team the caliber of Stanford.

To be somewhat analytical, Wilcox four – 2– five defense was not the best fit for the SEC at the time because so many teams were still playing heavily power football systems. Now I think the 425 that he runs would actually be fairly successful here, probably more so than it was when he was here the first time. However, I don’t think he has ever had an elite unit, regardless of where he has been, so that should tell us something.
Isn't the 4-2-5 just a nickel defense? That's what we run most of the time isn't it?

Wilcox wasn't that great at Tennessee:

Oregon - 13-48
Florida - 17-31
UAB - 32-29
LSU - 13 players on the field
Georgia - 14-41
Alabama - 10-41
S. Carolina - 24-38
UNC - 27-30
Florida - 23-33
LSU - 7-38
Alabama - 7-38
Arkansas - 7-49

he then followed that up with average to bad defenses at USC, Wisconsin and California

He had Cal at 7-6 and 8-5 in the two years prior to Covid. Only got to play 4 games in 2020 due to game cancellations, then NIL took storm the very next season. People dogging him for how Cal has looked recently don’t understand how he was in the process of building that program. Give him some talent and he can do well.
