He needs to hunt his shot more, as well. He has been the subject of many of Barnes's tirades, I feel like, re: guys passing up open shots.Really impressed me watching him against A&M. Two quick 3's that put us out of reach. We need to find away to get him in that score first mode. He has a sweet 3 point shot.
I try to keep an eye on him when he’s on the court and am of the opinion that he doesn’t move enough to get himself open frequently for a clean 3. Watch how active SV is on O then watch Powell and see if you agree. He seems to play to the NBA style of spreading the court and be ready for a kick out 3 when someone drives the lane and the D collapses which isn’t really our style of O. Powell’s got to get moving 2X without the ball when he’s on O in order to get a higher volume of open 3’s. JMOHe needs to hunt his shot more, as well. Without looking at the stats, i recall Powell getting several 15+ minute games and not contributing many points. Cherry picking one game doesn’t equate to the scoring being increased at the same ratio as the increase in minutes. BHH at KY and every game since is a good example. He doesn't play enough to get more shots. He played 9 minutes against A&M. Assume that UT had the ball half that time and he took
3 shots in 4.5 minutes of Vol ball possession. Three shots in that short a period is pretty high, actually, if one also assumes that any reserve coming in
generally needs some time to warm up and get into the flow of a game. To get more scoring out of Powell you'd have to play him twice as long--say, 18 minutes--and then of course other aspects of his game come into play. Powell and Baily are both in the same boat, IMO: Bailey can shoot as well--he's shown he can make 2,3, 4 shots in a short period of time--streaky--but clearly other aspects of his game have kept him mostly on the bench. Certainly there have been a number of games this year when our offense has really struggled--see Texas, whew, barely got to 50 points--and one thinks: We need either Powell or Bailey to come in and make some shots.
You mentioned fulkerson scoring twice in your post, have you been watching games? Why double team him, heck why even guard him!!! You do realize he doesn’t start anymore for a reason.I hope this kid has a great career here, but right now he’s a liability on defense, gives up turnovers when he dribbles or passes, and isn’t a threat to drive or catch and shoot off a cut. If they can rush Santi off ball screens, and deny his shot, it’ll be worse with Powell. This offense needs to be a driving threat from three spots on the floor, and then set shooters will get looks. JJJ, ZZ and Chandler are all capable of drawing two defenders. If Fulky is scoring he draws two. Our problem is situations where a single player is one dimensional creating a 4 on 5. Right now, that’s Powell on his best day, and Santi vs a good defender. This offense can sing when Fulky can score, and our guards are a double or triple threat. That A&M game was a hopeful correction from the Texas game. Hopefully we’ll see guards driving into pinch points and pulling the defense to help. As bad as this team looks on an off night, they have a lot of the same DNA as the UVA championship team of the Grant/Admiral era. That team won with a lineup that looks a lot like or small ball rotation.
You don’t just run around randomly trying to get open. The movement has to be within the offense. When we get stagnant and run the high screen offense, the wings just fan out and stay out of the way. Bad concept…. Last game we ran more motion than we have in months - thus more open shot opportunities for Powell. I disagree with Coach when he claims Powell passes up shots. Powell is not open when we run the stagnant high screen stuff…,I try to keep an eye on him when he’s on the court and am of the opinion that he doesn’t move enough to get himself open frequently for a clean 3. I agree with you. I just don’t see where he’s passing up good shots. Barnes has preached taking good shots in previous years and I think there has been confusion for their players in determining what is good. You don’t just run around randomly trying to get open. I agree with this totally. I watched him some and a few times he moved to a defender. I was a bit puzzled but maybe he had a pre destined positron be on a certain call.I try to keep an eye on him when he’s on the court and am of the opinion that he doesn’t move enough to get himself open frequently for a clean 3. I agree. Compared to Vescovi, Powell is a statue. Maybe that's by design...not sure. Another thing I notice is that he looks miserable. Maybe it's just his personality, but he doesn't look like he's having much fun in the court, even when he's playing well. He always looks very stoic. Maybe it is just focus.I try to keep an eye on him when he’s on the court and am of the opinion that he doesn’t move enough to get himself open frequently for a clean 3.
