Martin has the physical tools to be an all-conference performer, just hope he can raise his mental game significantly this year.

"Honestly, the guy who's had the most consistent spring is Justin Martin," defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said Thursday. "He's really stepped up his game and done everything he's been asked to do. In the meeting room, on the practice field and as a teammate, he's done really well.

Martin, a senior cornerback, is establishing himself as a leader entering his third season in the program after transferring from Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Although he played during his first two seasons at Tennessee, he struggled to cement his place on the depth chart. With the exit of Cameron Sutton, a likely NFL draft selection, Martin is stepping up to fill the void.

"His commitment and dedication to being a great player, I've seen a change in him," defensive backs coach Charlton Warren said. "Just today, I told him how much I appreciate that and that the team appreciates what he's done this spring. I've told him now he has to take that, run with it and do more."

Martin has the raw talent to be the number one corner taken in the draft. he's got the speed, length, ability. What he also had the last couple years was poor coaching and bad technique. i have a feeling Warren has got that straightened out and if he has, Martin will be first team All American.

If he's not, it will be because Moseley took his spot. Tarvarus McFadden and Martin/Moseley.

Good grief. Come on. I'll bet on that.

before we continue, i must warn you that i have a track record of knowing what I'm talking about. i say that in a humble way.

You know that you're TALKING. About the extent of the science.

You're taking Martin as a first team AA against the rest of America? With no preseason hype he will have trouble climbing that mountain even if he's that good. (See Barnett vs Garrett). And Barnett had production as a junior.

So yes I'll take that gamble.

That just means that Martin would need a 10 interception type of year with 2 sacks and a FF. very likely IF Warren is who we think he is. and IF Martin has got his act together(it seems he has)

So, all the guy who has 0 career INTs has to do is tie a 47 year old school record with 10 picks in one season?

Sounds totally doable. Go ahead and bet the mortgage.

I can't think of another corner we've had in the last 15 years that's had the talent and ability of Martin.

Talent and ability mean exactly jack squat when they aren't translated to the field. I can think of a half dozen corners who, though maybe not as gifted, have been infinitely more productive.

I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around the idae that you believe a guy with 0 career picks is going to suddenly grab in the neighborhood of 10. I just think that's highly unlikely, and this is just another example of offseason hype. Come October, I fully expect to be underwhelmed by Martin's play, and I'll just be happy if/when I'm wrong.

There is only a few inches between a Pat on the Back and a Kick in the Butt! One stupid second of off field dumbarse would take it apart forever...GBO

I wouldn't grade these things by the number of picks. How many times does a qb elect not to throw the ball because he would be throwing into coverage? How many breakups? Db is the one position other than qb that the rest of the body can't make up for what is lacking from the neck up. Also, when a db becomes recognized as a really good one, his number of interceptions will go down because qbs won't even bother to throw in his vicinity. Just look at Eric Berry's time here.

High praise for a reserve, don't you think?

That happens to cornerbacks. You can pick on the other side and avoid the hawk. Doesn't really work against safeties. They're not isolated to an area of the field. Berry didn't have a dip until Monte made him a glorified linebacker.

True, could have used a better example. But still true because one blown coverage will negate all the athleticism in the world. I think the bottom line is the mentality has to match the physicality.

That's a bit over the top Nation. I agree he's immensely talented, but a lot of his issues have come from his lack of emotional and mental commitment to make himself the best player he can be. He's more physically talented than Sutton to be sure, and both guys had the same head coach, DB coaches and DCs.....yet Martin has done very little at Tennessee while Sutton is getting ready to hear his name called in the NFL draft. Martin's gotta decide if he's gonna tap his potential or not....if he's committed, has truly turned the corner, then some of what you say is true.

Well, I didn't throw the 10 INT number out there. I was just quoting it. Eric Berry was consistent throughout his career until, as Butchna said, Kiffin negated his effectiveness. Martin has been a busted coverage waiting to happen every time he steps on the field, so I think that it's silly to expect him to all of a sudden start raking in the picks, or taking away half of the field with good coverage.

This guy coverage wasn't bad he was in position most of the time. Our db coach wasnt worth darn to correct the technique.
