One of the story lines is actually based on something that occurred in Knoxville. In the 80's, some guy strapped with a parachute that didn't open and lots of money fell from the sky and landed in south Knoxville on the street. They think he set his plane on auto pilot and it crashed in the smokies.

Some of it was.

The Outsiders was filmed in Pennsylvania, nice Appalachian looking set. For the most part Justified looked like California.
