When Bama hired Saban in 2007 I remember the fans just going bonkers like the 2nd coming. Then he went 7 & 6 and lost to Louisiana Lafayette while doing it. Does anybody remember or did anyone go on their chat boards to see the gumps reaction? Where they still positive?

Fast Forward to 2017 if UT hires Gruden what would be acceptable 1st year record for a 10 million $ hire which I think will take to get him in this hornets nest and out of the cozy ESPN confines where all the fans adore you..

Depends on what kind of class he pulled in before next fall.

Since we only have one tough road game in UGA, I think Gruden would have to win atleast Butch's ceiling which is 8-4. However, I would give him a pass on any record for his first year.

Nothing is a guarantee

We need to hire a known commodity to inspire otherwise we are rebuilding again

Doubt that happens but....

That 7-6 season included giving UT an arse whippin'!

And in year 2 he had them a game away from the BCS championship game.

1st year gets a pass, expect 5-7. By year 3, I want to start seeing what the team is going to look like in year 5, 8 or 9 wins. By year 5, I want to be in full competition for the SEC.

Now, if we go long term 10 yr plan, I would adjust my year 5 expectations, knowing that we are going to be winning at least 9 games a year, and being competitive in all our games. This is contingent on an older coach being a true caretaker, and bringing along the next long term head coach, who will take over around year 7 or so.

I see four home run hires although none are even remotely realistic....

Franklin
Patterson
Peterson
Jimbo

Any Coach worth that much cash should be in the mix in year 3. And show mass improvement in year 2.

I’m not even convinced Currie will actually fire Butch, much less make a homerun hire. There are starting to be grumblings that Butch will be head coach in 2018 as long as he makes a bowl this year.

That is smoke to keep the staff and players trying. The deals are being done behind the scene at this point.

Yep. I am beginning to believe this as well. Currie seems to like Butch. We will probably see Butch coaching UT in 2018. Hell, maybe even 2019.

What r you smoking???

See the JH thread. There are rumors that his agent is reaching out to TN to express interest IF the ravens season continues to unravel. He only has 2 years on his contract and the fans are ready to boot him out. He sees how it has worked out well to move from the NFL to college for his brother and he wants to give it a go.

A home run hire- let's hope so. We bunted foul on 3rd strike with the last three.

You think Butch could be coaching UT in 2018 and 2019....and that doesn't meet your definition of dumpster fire!!!!

That first year as a staff is a combination of running off dead wood along with playing as many recruited youngsters as possible to get them some experience, so a sub .500 first year would not bother me all that much. Year two has to play winning football and get to a bowl. Year 3 has to be in contention for the East. Year 4 or 5, needs to win the East to stay around at UT IMO.

You are assuming a NFL ownership is going to be as knee jerk as a college fan base. Quit taking fan fantasies and assuming they are true. If you really make your living by the law, you know that kind of thinking has caused innocent men to spend years in prison. And you responding to it is a little disturbing.
