A few weeks ago I posted a thread describing in detail how and why I believed there was a mistake in the current Rivals team rankings...in particular with the total points calculation...

Most of you thanked me for the info...however...several trolls (namely 99gator) and a few of my own fellow Vol fans went on the attack...making comments that ranged from "you're a tool for caring" to "well I think the points are right and I think you're just mad because they have us/you ranked so low"...

Well low and behold ol' Thunder5 was right...I notified Keith Niebuhr from Rivals about a glitch I had found with the bonus points portion of the formula, he passed it on to one of the administrators and below was their response:

In short, the calculator Rivals was using was leaving out the bonus points a player gets for being in the Rivals 100/JUCO50/Prep50 as well as the bonus points they get for being ranked in a certain range at their given position....that's what the "tech issue with the bonus points" is referring to...

Obviously, this will effect all teams...not just us...but it will effect us drastically because we have 7 current players (Bowles, Peters, Peterman, Santos, Crawley, McNeil and Cross) that fall into this bonus point category...

Those of you who had faith in ol' Thunder5...thank you :hi:

Those of you who attacked my numbers and tried to use UT's low ranking as fuel in a flame against us....shame on you

Once they fix this glitch the players we recruited will magically become even better! Good job! :D

Strong work. It may not make the players actually better, but I like it anyway!

Good job. Not a star gazer but if there is a system out there to "rank" players you would hope that it is right. We can like it or not, but there is positive publicity given in the sports world to whoever is at the top of the recruiting rankings. I always appreciate filling our specific needs and even the project players we get, but if we get a chance at "5*" players we should almost always pursue them.

Nice work! I don't plan to live and die by rankings any time soon, but I certainly don't think a higher ranking woudl hurt! Who knows, it might get us a second look from a recruit or two down the road.

They're only telling you that they made a mistake to mollify you so that you will keep your Rivals subscription. It's naïve of you to assume that you had it right when they had it wrong. They do this for a living. You're just made because Tennessee isn't in the top 50.

Kudos. I have been spending a lot of time lurking in the recruiting forum and can recall on several occassions over the last month where you stated there was a problem with the formula. I didn't doubt you, but I had no way of knowing you were correct..... until now.

Now, to diverge a bit with a random question. Since you seem to be a math wiz, is there a difference between a formula and an algorithm?

That being said, I believe to put too much emphasis on the nuances of these formulas has its entertainment value, but doesn't really make much difference in the long run. I do enjoy reading posters' opinions and analysis, though.

For those who don't enjoy the posts---DON'T READ THEM!!!!!!

I would hold off the celebration until they apply this "bonus" to all teams. It would only make sense that most of the teams ranked ahead of Tennessee would still be as they had similar to better players to be ranked ahead without said "bonus" points. Of course we will move up some as we have since landed several 3-4 star players.
