Hiring Kiffin was not a mistake. That was a package deal. NO ONE knew the series of events that would take place that eventually took him out of Knoxville.
Pearl was a home run hire at the time; however he can look no further than his bathroom mirror to find the one to blame for his departure.
It is funny that writers think that they know more about how to run an athletic department than an actual AD who has run a profitable collegiate program. Yet, when people write blogs, they want to tell everyone that because they are bloggers, they don't know anything about what they are writing about and have no credibility.
Tennessee is lucky as he!! that USC hired Kiffin, if not we would be in deep sh*t with both programs. Hammy made both hires. Plus he has mishandled the Pearl thing from the first press conference. I say fire his a$$.:yes:Mike Hamilton running an even more profitable athletic program during an economic depression is even more impressive-all while embarking on an aggressive facility building campaign.
Hamilton did the right thing in making his announcement when he did. It had to be done to prevent a possible ground swell of emotion from UT fans. It sent a message to the NCAA that the UTAD is sincere in abiding by the rules, and it got the ball rolling in it's coaching search.
In the end, we will not be punished as hard without Pearl as we would have with him, we get all of the bad blood out now rather than later, and we are able to aggressively identify and pursue our new coach quickly.
lol:Thanks for the laugh your :loco:
Obviously you're quite a bit smarter than I am, so I would love for you to just outline what Hamilton has done so erroneously; what YOUR decisions would have been; and finally who you think should step in and take over.
I'm still waiting.
It is people like you, jumping the gun and making rash, bold decisions that really create problems. Hamilton has overall been great for Tennessee, and I have yet to see someone legitimately demonstrate that he has been a failure.
High road? He was starting the coaching search. This 90% of the fanbase crap shouldn't be part of the argument either. A large segment of the fanbase wanted fulmer to stick around until he died. I couldn't care less what sportswriters think.
Easy enough. Go back and watch our football team's games from the past 3 seasons. Mike Hamilton either hired, or retained the head coach for each one of those mediocre/awful teams. Turn on ESPN and watch as UT takes shot after shot from the media about the Pearl situation. Look at our baseball record over the past few seasons. Hamilton hired that coach as well. One of the two main phases of his job is the hiring and firing of personnel. He's been an outright failure in that regard. He's been a success at raising money. That means he's succeeding at 50% of his job. At no school I ever attended and no endeavor in life I've otherwise undertaken was 50% considered anything other than failure.
basketball coach we've EVER had. Pearl screwed up--but that doesn't negate the fact that he was a great hire. Also, Hamilton deserves serious kudos for sacking Fulmer--who could have easily hung around a few more years being a loser fat cat. Hamilton had the rocks to drop him. Yea, Kiffin didn't work out--but that was bad luck. Baseball--yea, this guy had not been good but it's not a revenue sport. All in all I think Hamilton has been a good AD.
I guess you must be proud that the three major sports at UT are under NCAA scrutiny? You are wrong on Fulmer. If Hamilton had rocks he would have fired him after the loss to Vandy in 2005. Keeping Fulmer then sent a message tha mediocrity was a way of life at UT as long as we keep making money and most of the other coaches in the SEC did a great job of pointing that out to recruits.
And hiring Kiffin was not just bad luck. Al Davis sent Hamilton a letter telling him that Kiffin would destroy the football program at UT. Yes, hindsight is 20/20, but Hamilton's incompetence is true 3D in Tennessee.
Pound of flesh, you know. Actually I've felt for several months that BP was probably gone. But MH's timing for the interview was really, really bad, regardless of one's view on BP. To make the statements he made just before the biggest BB event of the year with all the talking heads, and have the University be dragged through the mud during that time was, well, incompetent. Don't know how else to describe it. I don't see how he can be fired at this point in time, with the replacement of a BB coach imminent, the time frame being a difficult obstacle to overcome. But I do believe that it has shortened his stay here, with heads rolling at the next opportunity. This has been a PR nightmare for UT.
ESPN is sweating Hamilton to take attention away from ohio state. Hamilton has done what was expected of him since he was hired.
Hamilton has done plenty to draw hatred before, but now he has just become a scapegoat for the Pearl lovers. It is kind of pathetic.
