Just how big is UT football in Tennessee?

Lived in mid TN when the titans came to town, remember my dad taking me to see them at vandy's stadium. So I've been a titans fan since 96. Been all vol. though since 87. The titans fan base is growing as more people are being raised with a home team but the vols have been apart of this states identity for over a hundred years. When we start winning again you will see the power T out number the flaming T 5 to 1.

As Nashville has grown, it's been from transplants. Lot's of Big 10 people came in with Saturn and the anicillary suppliers. There's always alot of West Coasters cycling through here in the music industry, most of whom are more into pro ball if they pay attention to sports at all. I also think that with UTK being in the doldrums for so long now, there's probably a lost generation of would be Vol fans in the city. The fanbase is still here but it's going to take a combination of hiring a big name coach and winning to reignite the flames.

Man, if you have to be told, your not from down here. Must be from up north, or being in a closet somewhere. Yes, we here in Middle Tennessee We have the Bama football, pukes. and we have Kentucky basketball, pukes. And you have the Vandy panzies pukes, that number, but a few. And the Titans fans have a mix bag, of all these.
The Vols Rule, these grounds from the Smokies to the Big Muddy. This is Big Orange Country period... Get it!!!!!!! So let't don't ask another queston that this again. Please...

Speaking of the Titans, it looks as though Chris Johnson wrote this post. As for being from up north, I was born and raised twenty minutes from Nashville and go to school at UT. But yeah I have no idea . I posted this to get everyone else's opinion on the matter. Not because I have no idea. Sweet, sweet Jesus.

Back on the matter. I think Titans fans could possibly outweigh UT fans in the Nashville area. But that is including casual fans. I would say UT has many more die hard fans in the area.

If it werent for the 50s or whenever vanderbilt had their famed glory days they would have been an fbs school and the vols would more than likely be dominant in nashville... but things have changed around here and the fakers have switched to revived teams....

In a place like Tennessee, UT will always be the number one game in town. The history, tradition and peoples ties to their alma mater make it so. It may seem like the Titans or some joker school like Vandy is relevant but when the Vols are back competing for the SEC they will be irrelevant. Broadly speaking, it's seemed like the Titans were more of a middle Tennessee team but, as loggervol put it, most Vol fans just root for Vols in the NFL.

Try the 1910s and 1920s! Actually I think last year was the first time they started 3-0 since 1946

Mods feel free to move to proper forum if needed. But I think this is an interesting topic.

As everyone knows there is a group trying to get Peyton Manning to the Titans. I was discussing the idea on a Titans message board I frequent. A couple of posters on there are under the belief that UT football is not that big in Nashville. According to some of them, the Titans are numbero uno and the Vols are a distant second. Being from Nashville, I disagree. What say you fellow Middle Tennessee posters? West Tennesseans feel free to include your opinion as well.

Tennessee football is much better than the Titans. Even a small crowd at Neyland outnumbers those watching the Titans. Tennessee football has always ruled the sports scene and will again once the Vols get back on top.

Live in Franklin. A few years ago the Tennessean took a poll and UT was the most popular sports enity in their coverage. MTSU was second and Vanderbilt was behind most other sports enities. The Titans I believe was in Tennessee at the time. In the past3 to 4 years the UT football program has loss some of it's luster because of the poor record in football. With all of the media attention that primarily goes to the Titan, UT still is probaly equal to the Titans popularity. The Titans have not been over popular with their poor performance. If UT gets it's football program back up to where it was a few years back, the I would expect UT to be the most popuar sports in Middle Tennessee.

I'm from Middle Tenn and obviously support both, but the Titans have wayyyyy more casual support than the Vols.

Vols fans are probably more passionate, but there are lots of fans of other colleges in middle and west TN. Almost all of those fans, plus the Vol fans, root for the Titans.

Just look at the TV ratings. Not even close.

Also, why does it seem like so many in this thread are butthurt about the Titans? You'd think people would be happy there is a team representing their state at the highest level of football.

5 star post, imo... I'd only add that I think it was 2009 that the Titans were #10 or #11 in the Harris Poll ranking the most popular professional football teams in the U.S. The Titans do have a very large fanbase in Tennessee and continentally...

Ditto. For the most part....it's the people who have moved to Nashville from other areas...especially effin' yankees, who get all worked up about the Titans IMO. They don't understand our religious like zeal for the Vols...and they never will. Very similar to Florida fans :p

People need to read this Come Home Peyton - Home
and see whom they refer to as a Tennessee Patriot. None other than Clay Travis. Yup,,,the same soddy brain idiot that hates UT football. VOLNATION stand up and be counted. This website is asking for YOUR donations to push the Peyton Come Home message - but when they refer to Clay Travis as a Tennessee patriot and use his umm "celebrity" status to get donations - IT'S a SCAM. Clay Travis hates the VOLS - DO NOT SUPPORT THIS HYPOCRISY.

This should be a sticky - or at least one of the mods should come out and let VOLNATION know whom is behind this. Nothing against Peyton, but we do not need to support anything that Clay Travis supports. HE HATES US and uses his piehole on a daily basis to deride the VOLS.

I was born in Franklin, but moved to Alabama when I was a teen. I've recently come back to Middle Tennessee, and was a little suprised at how many other fans, particularly Bama fans, there are in the area (99% of which wouldn't know who Tyler Watts is if he was standing right next to them). Obviously, Nashville and the surrounding areas have grown up quite a bit over the last twenty years. For instance, if I went to Cool Springs right now and took a poll of people over twenty, the amount of people who live in Williamson County would be large. The amount of people born there would be very, very small. Point being, Nashville has become sort of a melting pot for Southerners, similar to Atlanta. That being said, the Titans came along and have taken a nice foothold in the area, but anyone old enough to remember when they were still Warren Moon's Oilers probably also has a second team, which they started out rooting for way back when (mine is the Cowboys). The Vols were, and still are with the exception of a few pockets, THE team in Tennessee.

Vol fans are most certainly more passionate. Thats probably because, like you said, fans of other teams become Titans on sunday.

Good post.

I am from EAST TN currently working in downtown Nashville for the past two years temporarily on a project. I can assure you I get tired of all the Titans/Commode-doors coverage and have to listen to sportsanimal online to get anything over 15mins worth of UT coverage.

I'm from Clarksville and enjoy watching the Titans (parents have season tickets). However, IMO there is no debate that there is a lot more passion in the middle TN area about the Vols than the Titans. People just connect differently with their home state school vs. a professional team, especially in the south. I also lived in Memphis for 3 years and with the distance to Knoxville you wouldn't expect that strong of a UT following/presence. However, I was surprised by the number of UT fans there, although media coverage is definitely not as prevalent for the Vols.
