Just hire Steele

Just make Steele the DC and move on. The longer we drag this out and get turned down by position coaches for the DC position the worse it looks. It's embarrassing as a program that the damn LB coach at Ohio St doesn't want a huge pay raise and promotion to a major P5 school[/Q

I absolutely agree it is embarrassing.

I really do think the most comparable program to us at the moment is Ole Miss. The Heupel hire screams interim hire during sanctions period like Luke did at Ole Miss. It is discouraging that Heupel can't get any better assistant hires than what he is showing. Luke hired a top notch DC in Mike Macintyre and i know it can be debated if Rich Rod was a good OC hire, but at least he was a household name. Al Washington? Blake Baker? It's embarassing

There should be no rush. Just get the right guy. We're not getting any new recruits based on hiring today vs hiring 2 weeks from now.

Steele's a good DC, but if Heupel does not think he fits his strategy, I understand the need to look elsewhere.

I am WONDERING if the fact he is still on staff is to be available to assist a younger less experienced but more appealing DC with the administrative side of the job at a major power 5 school while holding down one of the position jobs that his contract and pay already fits. I can see where he would not want the first chair here due to both the knowns and unknowns with his pay the next two years already set. Help the new guy, get some pats on the back, and wait and see if other jobs appear during his stay here and walk away with his VFL card validated.

I'm sure if my AD and my HC left my school for a school whose football program was a dumpster fire AND is facing NCAA sanctions...

Yeah. I'd leap at my first chance to force a laugh from behind an anonymous identity, no matter how medicated I had to get.

The worse it looks? Who gives a damn how it looks anymore? We can’t look much worse than we have. Get the best DC you can. If Heupel doesn’t want to trust a backstabber like Steele that’s fine
You would think getting a new DC is as easy as ordering up a damn burrito bowl from Chipotle.

The 24hr instantaneous sports news cycle has literally destroyed our ability to act like adults. As you said, let Heupel hire the right guy no matter how long it takes. Next season is going to be rough. It will be even tougher if he makes a bad hire because the fans are tired of waiting for updates.

If position coaches are taking a pass on the job, that is just further evidence of where we currently are as a program and we should all recalibrate our fan egos a bit.

I also initially thought Steele made the most sense. I still think that would have been the right choice right after Heupel was hired, but if they now go back to him (when it's obvious they made several offers at other places and were turned down) it would look like we are absolutely settling (and this assuming Steele would even want the job). They will not be able to even keep a straight face and announce they got the best guy after doing their due dilligence search. It is a horrible look for sure when we seem to have DC's from places like Lousville, and even position coaches (even if from top programs like OSU they are still position coaches) turn us down.
Perhaps his D is not compatible with the O that CJH runs. If it was, he would probably already be named. Let the coach make the decision good or bad.

Lots of "experts" are saying this
It’s true in some circumstances. We’ve seen great coordinators go certain places and fail then when they go somewhere else they go back to high levels of performance.

Oh noes, not KnightFan367 and his fellow Florida Man posters!!!

Well, at least it gives them a distraction from getting attacked by alligators while swimming drunk in drainage ditches, smoking meth out of bass' ass, and trying to sell their children on Craig's List to buy lottery tickets.

If you were a new head coach and AD coming into the national joke that is UT football and are trying to right the ship so to speak why on earth would you want to hire not only a finalist for your job in the previous search but also a friend of the Fired/Retired AD. This is the thinking over many years in Knoxville that has got us to this point. It is time for a change as painful as that may be.

Their coach and AD and a big chunk of their staff left there to come here, despite the problems we have. That kinda says our situation, however bad it currently is, is better than theirs. I really don't care if their 250 fans are laughing at us. If you care, you should consider working on your self image.

Ok - but if this is how White and Heupel feel about Steele (perhaps makes sense to look at it this way) then why are they still using him to help with recruiting? That makes no sense.

Not the right fit.....not aggressive enough.

Oh no! I guess I better go run and hide. Seriously though, who gives a **** about some UCF fans laughing. They won't be laughing when they have minimal win seasons over the next 3 years.

The fact that he's still in the program indicates to me that Steele has a job. It may not be DC. It may be co-DC. It might be Asst HC and LB coach.

People here seem to be having a worse attitude about Steele's situation than he is.
That’s fine if he’s a position coach, but he’s not a good DC for CJH system, he’s not aggressive enough.

I don't know that he is but if so remember he is getting $450,000 a year so might as well use him for something don't you think. He may want the job so if he does he better prove it by helping out but that doesn't change all of the past connections either.

I wonder if steele even wants it ....if money isnt an issue here id love to see us make a push for jerod mayo.... It would be a long shot with how quickly hes moving up in the NFL...but id gladly see millions going to him... He would be a great addition to any staff in the country.

What the heck does this even mean? Why would the defense have to be compatible with the offense?

I would assume even if are paying him that it's a really bad idea having Steele talk to recruits if you can't promise them he is going to be on the staff if they come? If I was a recruit I would absolutely want to know that the guy who is making the pitch will not be gone a few weeks later when the new staff is announced. And Steele is unlikely to have any other position on the Heupel staff other than DC (assuming he even wants that).

thats what im saying .. he may have said he doesnt want the DC job .. he is getting paid ..offer him OLB job and let him make the decision .. good recruiter .. I would just have a good long talk wiht him about his committment ..if CJH is satisfied then he is a good coach to have on team .. get Rodney Garner for DL and let new DC hire the rest of staff .. Steele and Garner can adjust they been doing for years .. if they can handle being supervised by a young up and comer .. maybe they can ..maybe they cant .. if Steele dont want DC job and new guy needs his own guys then you let Steele go .. aint got much choice .. tell new DC he has to keep Steele as a position coach .. if its a deal breaker then pay the man ..
